*Correction: "Little Lion Man" was in its 39th week on the chart, not 38th. Matt, I'll see your Mediabase rankings, and raise you back to before the 20/15 rule, giving a more accurate comparison between these songs and "Paralyzer" and "Feel Good Drag" (70 & 71 weeks without respective Mediabase errors) "1901"14 - 9/12/10 15 - 9/19/10 14 - 9/26/10 13 - 10/3/10 13 - 10/10/10 ------------------ 16 - 10/17/10 17 - 10/24/10 18 - 10/31/10 20 - 11/7/10 14 - 11/14/10 15 - 11/21/10 17 - 11/28/10 18 - 12/5/10 19 - 12/12/10 17 - 12/19/10 OFF - 12/26/10 (#21) Total: 78 weeks "Uprising"13 - 9/12/10 14 - 9/19/10 15 - 9/26/10 14 - 10/3/10 15 - 10/10/10 14 - 10/17/10 15 - 10/24/10 ------------------ 16 - 10/31/10 19 - 11/7/10 18 - 11/14/10 16 - 11/21/10 19 - 11/28/10 19 - 12/5/10 OFF - 12/12/10 (#22) Total: 70 weeks "Savior"11 - 9/12/10 12 - 9/19/10 11 - 9/26/10 10 - 10/3/10 11 - 10/10/10 13 - 10/17/10 12 - 10/24/10 12 - 10/31/10 13 - 11/7/10 11 - 11/14/10 11 - 11/21/10 12 - 11/28/10 14 - 12/5/10 12 - 12/12/10 13 - 12/19/10 13 - 12/26/10 13 - 1/2/11 13 - 1/9/11 Total: 82 weeks -- and counting Plus, then there are these: "Lisztomania"14 - 10/31/10 (recurrent, despite only charting 39 weeks in the Top 40. ) 18 - 11/7/10 19 - 11/14/10 17 - 11/21/10 OFF - 11/28/10 (#22) Total: 45 weeks "Lay Me Down"12 - 11/21/10 14 - 11/28/10 17 - 12/5/10 16 - 12/12/10 14 - 12/19/10 14 - 12/26/10 Total: 48 weeks and counting You probably didn't see this because I edited my post on the Pulse board with more stats after you replied, but I did a similar comparison. I forgot about "Feel Good Drag" (ironically). Here's what I came up with: Good to see our independently-calculated numbers match up.

- Girl Talk's "Triple Double", which features a full verse/full chorus vocal sample from "Black & Yellow" toward the end, ramps up 28-23 upon the likelihood that I'll be buying tickets to his show in March.
- Canadian rapper J.Reyez spends his second week on the chart with "Cuz I'm Yellow", which is - you guessed it - an Asian take on the song.
- Finally, a Seahawks-themed version makes the chart from Seattle rapper TNT. It probably won't last more than another week on the chart, but it came around in quite a timely fashion as the 'Hawks surprised the NFL with a playoff victory.
Any of the last 3 songs being on the chart would most likely be a record (for the original and one adaptation charting simultaneously)... but this week, there are three. "All I Do Is Win" gets the ON FIRE nod this week as it soars into the top 10 (almost top 5; "No Love" is screaming up the chart as well and blocked it). This comes after my beloved Auburn Tigers won the national championship this past Monday. Lots of fans considered "AIDIW" to be a quasi-anthem for the team, and I've been blasting it too. "Memories" and "Tonight" receive weekend adjustments after the aforementioned weekend, but for a different reason than "Black & Yellow". "Drum Song" is the first instrumental to chart in quite a while, I imagine.

I hope you know that I enjoy reading your chart each week as well, though my comments have been a bit sparse lately.

SMBers: Would you listen to an audio countdown of the year-end chart, or would you prefer a guessing game? I'd be down for either. By the way, what's up with the "Black & Yellow" love? I like the song too; just wondering if there's a story there. I think a lot of it is just the excitement of hearing something relatively fresh in hip-hop, and the dearth of new songs making big impacts. As you can see from my most recent chart, the average age of the top 7 in weeks (not counting Khalifa) is 17. Usually that's closer to 12.

Don't have time to do all of them, but...
Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit): F
Probably the worst song of the year, meaning since I first heard it on December 30th, it would easily set a record for length of time taken to achieve Worst Song of the Year status.

"Coffee and Cigarettes" jumped 36-23 in one week, then lost its bullet? I seriously hope that's due to some Christmas programming.

(If you've already seen this on my Facebook page, don't worry about it.)
I'm pretty sure that none of you guys remember this, but a song called "Never Enough" placed around #34(?) on my year-end personal chart for 2003. It was by a band called Indecisive, who were from my hometown of Mobile and led by a friend of a friend, Troy Harris. They never achieved any more than local success (although I believe they once opened for Theory of a Deadman), but I really enjoyed what I heard of their music and went to a few of their shows when they were starting out.
I got some sad news this afternoon when it was relayed to me that Troy hung himself this morning. For my decade-end countdown I dredged up the mp3s I had created of a live show recording I did and posted "Never Enough" on YouTube (so that I could provide a link to every song on the top 400), so I'll post this here again. Troy was 16 at the time. I lost touch with him several months later, but from what I heard, he got into some legal trouble but eventually landed back at his parents' place while taking tech school classes. It seemed like things were OK, but I guess not.

This chart is dated 12/24/10; for the first time since 2004, the chart year will have 53 weeks. This is the 52nd week of the year, which means I have one more chart after this and my year will be complete.
SMBers: Would you listen to an audio countdown of the year-end chart, or would you prefer a guessing game?

Temper Trap opened their set with this song, but honestly, it wasn't their best performance. --- 9-7 Jimmy Eat World "My Best Theory": The previous 3 weeks or so, the song had just been taking up space before tumbling 4-9 last week. It rebounds after getting to hear it live. --- 30-23 Black Keys "Tighten Up": A big crowd-pleaser, obviously. I'm not sure this will propel the song much further up my chart, though. It might crack the top 20. --- 40-32 Broken Bells "The Ghost Inside": I was only interested in their singles (they closed the show and I ended up leaving early, after "The High Road", which wasn't their closer). They didn't disappoint with this performance and actually turned up the intensity a bit on it, which made me happy. --- DE-44 Sleigh Bells "Rill Rill": The first act was the only one I had never heard of going in. They have a very intriguing style of pop, punk, and thrash going on. This song showcases their pop side, which was the only one that went down easily with me at the show; however, a couple more of their harder songs grew on me in the days after ("Tell 'Em" almost made the chart, in fact). --- DE-46 Cake "Sick of You": Had been bubbling under for several weeks before the show pushed it over the top. They did a cool audience-participation segment that approximated both the chorus line and the faint background vocals. --- DE-48 Black Keys "Chop and Change": A track on the Twilight soundtrack that is much shorter on record than performed live. I did my best to appreciate their show even though their style isn't quite my favorite, but I was looking up the lyrics to this song before it was half over. Other risers: --- 17-12 Neon Trees "1983": It got a big boost from repeat play on my birthday Thursday. Hey, I can't help but pound a good song with my birth year as the title, especially with lyrics like "1983 / The year I was born" (even though that's probably being taken out of context). It has now outpeaked "Animal". --- 21-17 Usher f/Jay-Z "Hot Tottie": If the chorus didn't have the word "kemosabe", it might be 15 spots lower. ...OK, maybe not. But I still dig it (and the tie-in from Jay: "I creeped all in her teepee / We did it Indian style, had the girls speaking in tongue"). --- 26-18 Wiz Khalifa "Black and Yellow": First heard this almost a month ago on a friend's road trip playlist. I didn't even know this was a breakout hit single at the time; I assumed it was more of an underground mixtape-type track. This may be a future #1 for me. --- 27-19 Pink "Raise Your Glass": With almost every listen, I raise the bar for where this stands on my favorite Pink singles. This might end up all the way at #2 after "Just Like a Pill". This is just so much better and more palatable than a song like "So What". Catchy without being annoying, obnoxious, or faux-rock. And it's got a good message. Pink, that's all I need from you! --- 25-20 DJ Khaled f/Ludacris, Rick Ross, T-Pain & Snoop Dogg "All I Do Is Win": Bounced around the 55-70 area for much of the summer, it finally broke through after hearing it on highlight videos for a couple of my football teams (Auburn and South Alabama), who -- you guessed it -- haven't lost this year. --- 36-31 Go Periscope "Crush Me": This is a group from Seattle introduced to me by the same friend who I was with when I heard "Black and Yellow". They fill the dancey void between Owl City and the Ready Set. (I know that sounds bad, but this song is really not.) --- 37-36 Girl Talk "Triple Double": The track that stood out the most to me on this mashup album, it opens with a sick "1901"/"How Low" segment and ends with "Paint It, Black"/"Black and Yellow" (that song again). Ones that are slowing down or done: --- 5-4 Mike Posner "Please Don't Go" --- 6-5 Zac Brown Band f/Alan Jackson "As She's Walking Away": These two tracks are here basically because this area of the chart is pretty weak. The only one with a shot at toppling Arcade Fire is "PDG", but even those prospects are dim at best. Both are probably bulleted for the last time. --- 12-10 Linkin Park "Waiting for the End": I'm glad this made the top 10, but honestly I haven't really listened to it all in a few weeks. --- 14-15 Arcade Fire "Ready to Start": Did quite well just to get here. I gave it a full chance but it looks to be done here. --- 20-21 Bruno Mars "Just the Way You Are": A late push got this into the top 20 for a week (I was bedridden and only heard a few of the songs on my chart that week, and this was one of them -- performed acoustically on the Grammy nominations concert).

I finally got to see Jimmy Eat World play live for the first time as part of the Deck the Hall Ball. It also featured Sleigh Bells, the Temper Trap, Cake, the Black Keys, and Broken Bells.
Bleed American My Best Theory Coffee and Cigarettes Big Casino Pain Last Christmas Hear You Me Work Blister Get It Faster The Middle Sweetness
I was glad that they were able to fit 12 songs in, considering 5 other bands had to play that night. I was generally satisfied with the setlist as well. I didn't expect something like "Polaris", which is my favorite JEW song, but they were able to throw in a great album track like "Get It Faster", and I mean let's just put it this way: they played 5 songs that hit #1 on my chart ("Big Casino", "Pain", "Work", "The Middle", and "Sweetness" and a #2 ("My Best Theory)" -- not even counting "Bleed American", which charted nationally just before I got into JEW.
The only negative is that I ended up watching from the seats way far away. I was with friends, most of whom weren't big JEW fans, and I wasn't feeling very well anyway. It turns out I had pneumonia.

I was lucky enough to catch wind of a free Dave Matthews acoustic performance just over 2 hours before it was scheduled to begin. www.dmbalmanac.com/VenueStats.aspx?vid=1823
Crush So Damn Lucky Satellite Stay or Leave Rye Whiskey Save Me You & Me Don't Drink the Water I got there before 5:30 for the 7:00 start and still was only able to get into the 4th/5th row. I only recognized half of the songs: "Crush", "Satellite", "You & Me", and "Don't Drink the Water". The 45-minute set was shorter than I expected, but I enjoyed his crowd banter and I got a free "I'M A PC" T-shirt out of it.
Happy birthday, Eth and Andrew! From the idyllic warm and sunny oasis of Seattle, where it's still the 18th here (but the sun has already been down for 6 hours).

Time for some long-overdue chart commentary: lw tw wk pp ARTIST - Title | Comment | 01 01 10 01 ZAC BROWN BAND - Free | Yes, it's the first country song on my chart to ever hit #1. | 02 02 15 01 ANBERLIN - Impossible | It's not their strongest leadoff but still hung on for 4 weeks. | 05 03 09 03 PARAMORE - Careful | Their 5th straight top 6 hit, it could surprise and go all the way. | 03 04 12 03 KATY PERRY - Teenage Dream | It slammed the brakes really quickly, but it's not freefalling. | 06 05 10 05 JIMMY EAT WORLD - My Best Theory | Still a longshot for giving JEW a #1 for 4 straight albums. | 04 06 16 01 EMINEM - Not Afraid | Already a top 10 rap song since '00, but behind "Lose Yourself". | 07 07 24 01 FLORENCE & THE MACHINE - Dog Days Are Over | Resurged after a VMA performance. Several parallels to "Maps". | 09 08 13 08 THE TEMPER TRAP - Fader | Approaching the "Sweet Disposition" peak of #6. | 11 09 11 09 TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB - I Can Talk | 3rd top-10 hit this year that hasn't hit a Mediabase chart. | 08 10 17 08 30 SECONDS TO MARS - Night of the Hunter | …and here was the 2nd. ("Hello Seattle" was the first.) | 13 11 13 11 MUMFORD & SONS - Little Lion Man | I won't complain that this hit #1, but let's get Anberlin there now. | 14 12 09 12 TRAIN - If It's Love | Now *this* is a feel-good Train song I can get behind. | 15 13 13 13 NEON TREES - Animal | Nearing its peak. Helped in Sept by JetBlue in-flight ad plays. | 17 14 08 14 CEE-LO GREEN - f*** You | I'm sad that this appears to be out of gas nationally. | 10 15 12 10 EMINEM f/Rihanna - Love the Way You Lie | A month ago, Em had 3 of the top 11 (this, Not Afraid, Airplanes). | 21 16 07 16 ARCADE FIRE - We Used to Wait | The Suburbs is the first Arcade Fire disc I've purchased. | 20 17 09 17 PAPER TONGUES - Trinity | How did this peak lower than the annoying "Ride to California"? | 22 18 04 18 ONE ESKIMO - Amazing | Took off like a rocket; should give the band a second top 10. | 18 19 09 18 JAY-Z - On to the Next One | 4th top-25 hit from The Blueprint 3. It took long enough. | 12 20 21 07 AGAINST ME! - I Was a Teenage Anarchist | Their first top-10 hit, and impressive longevity to boot. | 16 21 24 04 ONE ESKIMO - Kandi | Its first 6 weeks were spent at #48 and #49. Persistence paid off. | 26 22 05 22 ARCADE FIRE - Ready to Start | Won't match their 4 best tracks, which all hit my decade 400. | 27 23 12 23 METRIC - Eclipse (All Yours) | The vacuum effect helps their chances to eke out a 3rd top 20. | 25 24 11 24 JOHN MAYER f/Taylor Swift - Half of My Heart | Chug chug chug… Chart run: 48-44-41-39-37-34-31-28-26-25-24. | 19 25 21 05 PHOENIX - Lisztomania | Chart run will end very similar to "1901" but a bit lower at its peak. | 23 26 09 23 CIVIL TWILIGHT - Letters From the Sky | Right up my alley on paper, but I just couldn't get fully behind it. | 30 27 05 27 FAR EAST MOVEMENT f/Cataracs & Dev - Like a G6 | Would've been much better for summer, but why not for fall? | 31 28 13 28 MAYDAY PARADE - Kids In Love | Resilient! Chart run: 41-37-30-29-30-33-32-35-33-34-36-31-28. | 32 29 04 29 ZAC BROWN BAND f/Alan Jackson - As She's Walking Away | Another first: a country artist charting 2 songs at once here. | 35 30 04 30 RAY LAMONTAGNE & THE PARIAH DOGS - Beg Steal or Borrow | Yet another first: an alt-country artist charting at all, really. | 24 31 22 09 DRAKE - Over | Its longevity can't be overstated, with 3 months in the top 20. | 34 32 08 32 THE SCRIPT - I'm Yours | Lost its bullet this week, maybe falling short of "TMWCBM"'s peak. | 41 33 04 33 THE XX - Crystalised | No huge movers this week, so this is the closest to a breakout. | 37 34 05 34 LINKIN PARK - The Catalyst | Chart gets a little weak around here. I caught on too late. | 38 35 06 35 BRUNO MARS - Just the Way You Are | To be clear, I'm disappointed by this effort, but it's decent. | 28 36 26 01 B.O.B f/Hayley Williams & Eminem - Airplanes, Pt. II | Heading toward a top-5 year-end finish, at least. | 29 37 11 14 B.O.B f/Rivers Cuomo - Magic | This did just about as much here as it did nationally. | 39 38 10 36 WEEZER - Memories | Showing flickering signs of life, but this came out too quickly. | 40 39 05 39 30 SECONDS TO MARS - Closer to the Edge | In danger of their poorest chart showing, competing w/"NOTH". | 49 40 02 40 LINKIN PARK - Waiting for the End | This is the LP song to watch. Top 20 a very good bet. | de 41 01 41 MY DARKEST DAYS f/Zakk Wylde & Ludacris - Porn Star Dancing | Don't shoot me. No, seriously, don't. | 44 42 03 42 JIMMY EAT WORLD - Evidence | JEW album track serves as a reminder to finish listening to the CD. | 33 43 16 08 ENRIQUE IGLESIAS f/Pitbull - I Like It | The unlikeliest top-10 hit of the year if ZBB doesn't qualify. | 36 44 13 24 STONE SOUR - Say You'll Haunt Me | Great compromise between "30/30-150" & "Through Glass", but… | 48 45 02 45 NEON TREES - 1983 | Doing its part to keep "Animal" out of my top 10. | 45 46 03 45 ONE ESKIMO - Balloons | I streamed this album on a whim one day and this track stuck out. | de 47 01 47 NELLY - Just a Dream | Anyone with Nelly in their "Improbable Comeback" pool, congrats. | 47 48 09 43 KE$HA - Take It Off | Not hanging around much longer, but she's 4 for 4 in top 50 hits. | 50 49 02 49 KINGS OF LEON - Radioactive | See the comment on Bruno Mars, but I was hoping for even more. | de 50 01 50 DISTURBED - Another Way to Die | Edged Sick Puppies "Maybe" & 3OH!3 "Double Vision" for #50. | 42 -- 19 18 BROKEN BELLS - The High Road | | 43 -- 07 33 MAROON 5 - Misery | | 46 -- 08 32 BRANDON FLOWERS - Crossfire | |

37 31 3 31 Jay-Z - On to the Next One DE 49 1 49 Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind Part 2 DE 50 1 50 Arcade Fire - We Used to WaitFor the first two, why now? And also, why that Arcade Fire song? I wasn't that big on OTTNO when it was out, but after "Young Forever" ran (and started to re-run) its course, I gave it another shot and it caught on with me. ESOM2 was used quite effectively in a rush video for a college chapter of my business fraternity. The video shows some members of the chapter traveling from DC to New York and spending time on the Brooklyn Bridge -- an iconic symbol for our fraternity because the founders walked across the bridge after their classes at NYU, and I happen to be the chief organizer of an event next month that is basically centered on the exact subject matter of the video, AND... I just happen to be in New York right now (visiting from Sunday to Tuesday). And the chart is rather weak at the bottom. For the scoop on the Arcade Fire song, just go to www.thewildernessdowntown.com. (I'm still hoping that "Ready to Start" will grow on me, considering they've had four huge hits on my chart that haven't even approached what "Ready to Start" has done nationally.)

Onefrayedrepublic has to have the most appalling music taste on Pulse. Why? What did that little twerp do now? (Is he the one that lists Streets of Gold as his "album of the year"?) What else? His latest is that he hates "F uck You" and thinks it proves Pop radio has the maturity of a 14-year-old. Yeah I kind of thought it sounded old too. Im not really sure what to think, Not really digging the song at all. Even lyrics aside, I'm not digging it. lol I also feel like im the odd person out, where everyone is professing their love for the song, and i'm like DNW. Yep. This song is old, cliché, and utterly irrelevant on the radio of 2010. The only thing that makes it interesting, the incessant unneeded profanity, is neutered by the FCC. What this song does prove, however, is that a lot of pop listeners, while they may be older than 14, still have a mental age of 14. I don't like Bedrock, either. And I'm certainly no moral stickler (I've stanned way too much for 3OH!3 and K$ to get away with that ... plus, my favorite artist at the moment is Daddy Yankee, so no moralizing out of me.) The problem with this song is that it sounds dated and it is only going to be a novelty hit because it is pushing the envelope on offensive lyrics much like If You Seek Amy did. I gave If You Seek Amy a pass as it was catchy, but this isn't catchy, and thus I don't like it.

Another observation: Although "Love the Way You Lie" actually hit its peak position before "Not Afraid" did (thanks to not being able to peak higher than #1), "LTWYL" lost its bullet one day after "Not Afraid". And thankfully, "NA" still has 5 more weeks before it's eligible for recurrency, otherwise it could have lost its bullet and been removed from the chart in the same week. That would have been a bitch.

I'm all for diversity on the pop chart. But faceless pop groups like A Rocket to the Moon, The Ready Set, Runner Runner, We the Kings, (throwing in Mayday Parade, Cartel, The White Tie Affair, The Maine, and Hot Chelle Rae, even though they have decent songs) and probably 2AM Club and Nights Atop Paris or whatever they're called (who I wouldn't know for sure about because I haven't heard them, but I'm sure Kiss 106.1 in Seattle has them on power rotation) can all be combined into one song in my opinion. And it's probably a Boys Like Girls B-side.
