"Totally Awesome American Idol Audition" No, not "Pants on the Ground." (Though apparently that guy is way cool, and not just some random crazy old man they found on the street and bogusly let into the building and all the way upstairs for a waste-of-time audition before the judges. So that was good to hear, to get this guy's backstory the attention it deserves. But no, I'm talking about Tuesday night, in Boston, when I first thought it was Michael Ian Black punking the American Idol judges, before he took off his "Clark Kent" glasses and I saw it wasn't him. Still, even from watching it a second time on YouTube, I don't know how this could not be an elaborate joke audition. His irritation from waiting all day, his naivete, and his creepiness are too over the top. Either way it's hilarious. Check it out.

Lol, that's pretty funny. When I watched the clip, I kept thinking "this can't be real" and apparently it was?

Haha, between him and the new dumb broad judges, I was totally on his side. Sucks for him that he's gotta pick the year after Paula left to give this a shot; she would have totally loved him. .

I was listening to some 89x for the first time in a while yesterday. Why? I start my car and 32nds to Mars' "The Kill" was playing. I'm sure it sounds highly insignificant, but not for me. Now, back when we had full Mediabase access, I spent a little time compiling unusual all-time play counts from 89x (ie. Big hits they never played). For 30, as of December 2009, It looked something like this: Capricorn: 112 Edge of the Earth: 2 Attack: 4 The Kill: 6 From Yesterday: 615 A Beautiful Lie: 2 Kings and Queens: 77 So yeah, totally thought it was my iPod I was listening to there. That was one serious double take there, all over a song every other station must have played over 2000 times by now! And I kept listening. I mean, why not? Heard some stuff like: AFI - The leaving song pt 2 AFI - Beautiful Thieves Anberlin - True Faith (several times) Alice in Chains - Your Decision (several times) Avenged Sevenfold - Afterlife Incubus - Oil and Water Korn - Make Me Bad Cake - Short Skirt/Long Jacket Theory of a Deadman - Make Up Your Mind ( , but I needed the laugh) P. O. D. - Boom (Never was a big fan of this, but now that it's been 5 years since the song's even crossed my mind...cool beans!) Iggy Pop - Little Know It All (well, local act featuring Can-Con artist, but still...) Janus - Eyesore Muse - Resistance (several times) The Used - Blood on my Hands (several times) Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want (Really? On Alternative Radio in 2010?) Yeah, the pleasant surprises far outweighed the burned outed.

That's so insane the amount of times they played a couple of their songs at the expense of all their other ones, including their biggest hit of all. Heck, I would love to have heard "Capricorn" on the radio at any point. I'm just thankful KNSX (now KQQX) played "Edge of the Earth" a bunch in 2003. And speaking of "Everything You Want," when that showed up on AT40's Top 40 of the 2000s, I hadn't heard it in so long. It sounded just as good as 10 years ago when it blew up for them.

Got my music library on shuffle right now and "Can't Hold Us Down" comes through. I laughed out loud, hearing this line almost 7 years later: "Here's something I just can't understand If a guy have three girls then he's the man He can even give her some head and sex her raw If a girl do the same then she's a whore But the tables 'bout to turn, I'll bet my fame on it..." I had wondered why Lil' Kim's career seemed to vanish in the years since. This explains everything!

For what it's worth, 89x is pretty Canadian-based, and "The Kill" wasn't much of a hit in Canada. Neither was "Feel Good Drag". Yeah, the pleasant surprises far outweighed the burned outed. I gotta give 89x some credit in that field. Yeah, they're more active-leaning than our actives, and play even more Nickelback than us, but they do play a lot of mid-2000s hits other stations have forgot.

Last week, I was told by the person I'd been seeing long-distance that she couldn't be anyone's girlfriend right now due to some issues in her life (that I know all about). She said she needed to be there for herself before she could be there for someone else.
What follows is the story of my #1 song this week (and next week, and most likely at least the week after):
(1:34:54 AM) Me ***** is dating other people. The day after she wanted a break, she met a guy at a bachelorette party and they're going on a date tomorrow. (1:38:31 AM) Friend Can I speak bluntly? (1:38:37 AM) Me I suppose. (1:39:00 AM) Friend Never mind, I don't think I need to. I think you know my feelings on this. And I don't need to say more. (1:41:28 AM) Friend I don't have anything nice to say right now. (1:44:29 AM) Friend Go out and have a ton of fun, and move on. If she doesn't realize what she has, then it's her problem. (1:45:14 AM) Me It's weird that the people I'm closest to right now, and think I would have the most fun around, are in ******** (her city)[/b]. (1:45:32 AM) Friend Well, we are kickass people. (1:46:17 AM) Me But I can't move there right now. (1:46:23 AM) Friend That's fine. And I wouldn't date ***** when you are here. (Note: Two weeks ago, I booked a flight to see her at the end of April.) (1:46:54 AM) Me Before, it was the further the head went one direction, the further the heart went the other direction. But now the heart is being slowly stepped upon. (1:47:32 AM) Friend So use the head and get the fuck out of the way of the stiletto. (1:51:18 AM) Me I didn't think she would be going on dates less than a week later. (1:51:34 AM) Friend I didn't put it past [her]. (1:54:11 AM) Me She is scared that I will hurt her, due to past relationships and long distance relationships. She basically said that, although she didn't say me specifically, she is scared of getting hurt in general. (1:54:41 AM) Friend Yeah, she might get hurt. But you're not her past relationships. (1:54:44 AM) Me I tried to tell her that. (1:55:03 AM) Friend And if she doesn't get it, don't dwell on it. Go out on dates, seriously. (1:55:25 AM) Me Yeah. Easier said than done, but I hear ya. (1:56:04 AM) Me I still don't know how to talk to people. But that's another conversation. (1:58:12 AM) Friend Only if you say so. (1:58:27 AM) Me I'm exaggerating. (1:58:47 AM) Friend No, you're feeling like a failure, if you're honest with yourself. (1:59:51 AM) Me Well, yes, irrationally. My irrational thoughts in the past few days have included "I was the best I knew how to be and it still wasn't enough." (2:02:12 AM) Me I'm feeling like it's me, not her, despite the logical part of me trying to tell me otherwise. Not a big surprise. (2:03:42 AM) Friend So what if it was you. What would be different? (2:04:02 AM) Me If she broke up with me due to something I did? (2:04:08 AM) Friend Yes. Or [God] forbid, who you are. (2:05:27 AM) Me Well, first if it was something I did: It depends on my motive. If it was unintentional, I would feel bad. If it was intentional, I would probably be embarrassed and wanting to remember it so I didn't do it in the future. (2:06:12 AM) Me I would feel worse if it was due to who I was, because I can't change who I am as easily as I can stop doing something I did. I think that's how I would feel, anyway. (2:06:40 AM) Friend Okay. Are you proud of who you are? (2:07:46 AM) Me Overall, yes. In terms of me and *****, yes. It's been one of the hardest things I've ever gone through (I know, I've lived a relatively fortunate life), but I've done the best I can. (2:08:10 AM) Friend Then why in the hell would you think you did something wrong with it? (2:08:27 AM) Me There are a lot of things I don't know. lol (2:08:50 AM) Friend And at least you lived. (2:08:50 AM) Friend Look, sometimes we crash and burn. (2:09:48 AM) Friend That is what Shakespeare is talking about, loving and losing. (2:09:58 AM) Me Yeah. Or John Mayer. (2:10:09 AM) Friend Fuck John. (2:10:16 AM) Me lol

So sorry, Matt. As you try to make sense of all this, it sounds like you've got a pretty level-headed friend, there, though. Yep, definitely. (He told me he wondered if he should be a therapist. He's done this for others, and he has a bachelor's in psychology.) I mean, this whole relationship has pretty much been one complicated situation after another -- way more than I can summarize here -- but further complicating things is the fact that the next morning (yesterday), she found out there was a death in the extended family, someone she was closer to than most other family members were. She's taking it really hard, so obviously I have been there for her as much as I can. Outside of that, I would try to keep some distance for my own sake, but: - A few months ago I volunteered to be on a sub-committee for a college group that she advises, and I would feel awful withdrawing from that.
- We are still very good friends; in the week or so since, we have talked/chatted/texted with the same frequency, which is a lot. (She has told me that she still loves me, and I hope she still does, but I can't depend on that possibility mattering until she snaps out of this and stops playing games... if she does at all.)
- And, well, 85-90% of the time, she is calling me, not the other way around. The only thing I could really do to keep my distance is to ignore phone calls. Here is my call log from yesterday:
INCOMING 9:05 AM 2:00 INCOMING 9:39 AM 11:00 INCOMING 9:57 AM 1:00 INCOMING 10:12 AM 2:00 INCOMING 10:25 AM 2:00 INCOMING 12:44 PM 28:00 INCOMING 4:41 PM 16:00 INCOMING 5:01 PM 5:00 INCOMING 5:36 PM 4:00 INCOMING 6:07 PM 13:00 INCOMING 6:27 PM 0:57 OUTGOING 6:45 PM 0:02 INCOMING 7:19 PM 1:00 INCOMING 8:02 PM 4:00 INCOMING 8:23 PM 0:19 OUTGOING 8:24 PM 0:02 INCOMING 8:24 PM 4:00 INCOMING 8:38 PM 8:00 INCOMING 9:26 PM missed OUTGOING 9:32 PM 0:03 INCOMING 9:34 PM 1:00 INCOMING 2:10 AM 3:00 Total: 106:23. Incoming call time: 106:16; outgoing call time: 0:07.
(This is more minutes than a normal day, since she wasn't online much at all and was generally free to talk on the phone, but it's not astronomically above average. And yes, 2:10 AM, which is 12:10 AM her time. And yes, she woke me up, about 10 minutes after I had fallen asleep. My "Sleep Cycle" iPhone app indicates that I fell into a deep sleep two minutes after getting off the phone with her. Curiously though, she didn't talk to me about her date -- which she still went on despite the family hardship -- then or any time at all so far today. I'm fine with that, though.)

I saw early last night it had been Pulse Oldies Board with some song topics getting renamed as oldies, but before I went to bed the song titles were all changed back to normal, only the board was the Garyn Fett music board with a death skull logo and in the header bar, it repeatedly flashes "Sit down" instead of the usual PMB greeting.

Not sure what's in the works, but it'd be funny if Pulse was ruled by "Garyn Fett" for at least half an additional day, if not several more days, just to make those who think it's an April Fools' joke second-guess themselves.

I'm scared you guys. Now I literally have nothing to do whenever I sit at the computer. lol. I used to love checking out the latest chart movements and updates on songs I liked and stuff. lol.
Let's email all the people we like(d) over on Pulse and bring em here. Meanwhile, should Pulse ever be regained control of, we should just end it without notice. F them!

When I went to the public library well before the self-check systems were there, people sometimes would tout about the diversity of the albums I'd check out there.
However, nothing compared to what I checked out this week: Johnny Cash, Deerhunter, Maxwell, Tears for Fears and John Zorn. Only 2 of those were at the actual same section but those have little in common. It wasn't really deliberate, so I was kind of shocked to think about it.

My 'friend' from Detroit who I work with occasionally was driving down here and asked me which radio stations to listen to. I told her about the rock station, the classic rock station, and the rock 'n' roll oldies station, and noting that there wasn't any outlet for modern rock music here anymore.
Of course those three stations were not good enough for her, as they wouldn't have been for me. I get in her car to go to lunch and the radio's playing "Seven Nation Army", followed by "The Royal We"--songs I'd never thought I'd ever hear on the radio around here. I looked at the frequency and literally out loud said "WTF?". Yeah, she found Toledo's new liberated Alternative station whose existence I was completely unaware of, when she doesn't even live here.
Apparently the station has been running since April 23rd according to an AllAccess press release. It isn't being monitored though (otherwise I would have spotted it while perusing AllAccess's charts). Nothing amazing (it never had been anyway), but it did introduce me to the likes of "Lay Me Down", "In One Ear", "The Royal We", "I Was A Teenage Anarchist", "Diamond Eyes", "Neutron Star Collision", "Nightmare", and *gulp*..."Wild and Young".

I would have totally called in and made a last request, too. Like, "Clint Eastwood" or "Schism" or something like that, just like the good ol' days. . Seriously though, it's too bad. Is there any truth to the comment by that anonymous guy that accused you of dodging licensing regulations by being Canadian? Seems to me it'd be tough to keep that under wraps for almost ten years.

Seems to me it'd be tough to keep that under wraps for almost ten years. It's half true. The turning point was a couple weeks ago, I received a rather threatening letter from SoundExchange (the U.S. copyright organization responsible for collecting royalties) stating that we require a statutory license under U.S. Copyright Act. However, as far as I know, they really can't do anything, since the law has no jurisdiction in Canada when we have our own licensing agencies like SOCAN. I kinda reflected upon that after, and decided at this point in time, I don't care enough to bother dealing with it. I already do very minimal for the station anyway, so keeping it around seems like a possible liability for no good reasons. If this was 5 years ago, I probably would have cared more. But now, I'm okay with not dealing with that bulls*** anymore.

Peggy: That's right, Bobby. I think you will find that I have no testicles. Kahn: She bluffing! Finish her! . There's so many exchanges from King of the Hill that are of signature caliber, which is easy for me to say since I basically spent the whole first half of this year studiously watching (so to speak) the first six seasons of that show, along with a friend of mine I work with equaling my enthusiasm for it.

Especially since Malcolm in the Middle got moved from 1:30 to 7:30 AM, when I used to try to be in bed by 2 or 3, the past several months, I've found myself staying up 'til 4 & 4:30, just so I can watch King of the Hill (which I haven't seen all of yet, though there are plenty episodes I've seen several times by now) and then That '70s Show if it's a good one. I've seen all the decent seasons of that (1-5) probably a dozen times, so thankfully it's on second, so I don't have to wait through it to see KOTH. I noticed I didn't have a signature on here anymore, and while I saw that particular episode for the second time a month or two ago by now (somehow that line didn't stick with me the first time), it's still the most recent KOTH line that made me laugh the hardest that I could still recall off-hand. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing one-liners and punchlines every single episode, but that one's been at the front of the mental Rolodex ever since.

It was great hearing "Too Little Too Late" by Barenaked Ladies and "Keep A Lid On Things" by Crash Test Dummies on the radio for the first time in almost ten years.
But did it really have to be on an oldies station? I'm 19, they shouldn't be playing songs I remember. Thanks for making me feel old.
