Oct. 26 Winds of Plague - Decimate the Weak ($10 at the Danzig show, in which they were one of the opening bands. Replaces the copy on my hard drive.)
Yesterday (Best Buy) Shiny Toy Guns - Season of Poison T.I. - Paper Trail (If I'd known Best Buy would have it on sale this week for $9.99, I would've just waited, instead of price matching Circuit City's ad yesterday. Anyway, this replaces the copy on my hard drive/the CD I burned for the ex-gf that I haven't had the chance to give to her yet and had been playing often in the shower and in the car in the meantime.)

Used stuff: Violent Femmes - Viva Wisconsin [live] Blowing Trees - s/t (Both cheap online. This in particular was from a local band and one that wasn't of the rock/metal variety so it piqued my interest.)
TV on the Radio - Young Liars (EP) (I got this for "free" at their show. Well, I gave merch person a $20 bill and he gave me two $10's back, and I felt like saving for the trip. Bad Kirk but good luck.) Kaiser Chiefs - Off with Their Heads ($7.99 BB impulse.) Shiny Toy Guns - Season of Poison (Best Buy exclusive w/ DVD; $7.99)

Nothing too interesting here... a few used impulse purchases + a lot of Robbie Williams odds and sods But if anyone is interested in acquiring more in the next couple days, and there's a Borders nearby, they've got one of their 40% off all CDs coupons for the next couple days. Their prices tend to be high-ish, but this usually brings them back down to decent deal range, and I've never seen them include boxed sets in the deal before: coupon here

Unfortunately, the nearest one for me is at Newark Airport. There's like 5 in Manhattan, but it's somewhat prohibitive for me to travel there, and would essentially negate the 40% I save on whatever CDs I might buy. Even if I drove, I imagine the tolls would be enough to do it for me.

So I basically went into the poorhouse this afternoon, buying new music. Thankfully, there doesn't look like any more new releases this year that I'll have to buy, which is why I'm updating now, as opposed to just waiting 'til the end of the year. In fact, other than downloading the new Britney Spears and Fall Out Boy next month, I can't think of anything else of interest to me before 2009. At the concert:The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound ($10)At the concert:dredg - Leitmotif ($10)Last Thursday:Mudvayne - The New Game Dido - Safe Trip Home This afternoon (I waited until all 5 were out, so I'd only have to make one trip):Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak The Killers - Day & Age Good Charlotte - Greatest Remixes (Yeah, I'm one of proabably 3,000 people that actually cared enough to buy this this week.)Coldplay - Prospekt's March EP And with the exception of Mudvayne, which I was just barely able to squeeze in before having to leave for work, all of those are still wrapped. I'll have all next month to listen to them before the '09 deadline. (As well as a lot of other CDs and downloaded albums. ) To be fair, I listened to mp3 copies of Gaslight and Dredg twice each before their respective concerts (reading the lyrics both times), so I'll pretty much only need to listen to the CDs once and then those albums will be ranked. I totally meant to bone up on Mudvayne and Snot's albums over the past 4 days before tonight's show, but didn't even remember to until late last night, when it wasn't possible to listen to everything anymore. Got most of it in.

Good Charlotte - Greatest Remixes (Yeah, I'm one of proabably 3,000 people that actually cared enough to buy this this week.)Dammit, I won't even know how close I was in my estimate. Rivers Cuomo's second home recordings disc was the last debut on the chart at #174 with 5,600 sold. Stupid inflated Black Friday week.

The #200 album sold over 4,700 so it'd be about that much or less. But then again, point's coming from post author whose favorite artist's (first week) sales are pretty irrelevant. I tend to look at that part of Pulse, in the General Music News forum. I'm glad that section is separate from the artist discussion.

Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak The Killers - Day & Age Coldplay - Prospekt's March EP Bought all three of those week out. plus: Thrice - Live at the House of Blues (I'm a die-hard and their headlining show this spring is the best I had seen all year. 3 discs for $13 damage is no slouch)If I round out for the year, it'll be a couple to few weeks, like the post-Christmas/New Years shopping.

2009: MGMT - Oracular Spectacular The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound
All used: The Beatles - (The White Album) (At $7, I knew I couldn't find it anywhere else! Oh, I really started to hear this one in like '05 or so.) Cake - Comfort Eagle (I was familiar with most of these songs at some point.) Alanis Morissette - Flavors of Entanglement Rise Against - Revolutions per Minute (I bought Siren Song and Sufferer in '07 when I realized how cheap the list price was on those. This was roughly $4 and I enjoy it more than I remembered.)
Jon Crosby - Generica (Vol. I-V) (This shipped in January, I believe. It removes a few of II and most of III so when I get an unshared computer I'll probably download those two. Not traditional VAST, tellingly credited as Jon. Disc one is mostly just acoustic, disc two has a fuller sound, albeit more of an Americana thing.)
Jay-Z - The Black Album (used.)
Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something (Fan-acclaimed compilation that includes four 7" singles, three songs from a rare EP, plus "Baby Blue Sedan," which was previously just on TLCW's vinyl edition. In spite being from 1996-8 stuff, this stuff isn't as sprawling as expected. I see them live next month.)
I was going to get the Lonely Island's Incredibad yesterday but didn't know that Best Buy had sold out all of its copies by then. I was on the way to work and after went to a sort of gathering, so I couldn't devote too much time to coming across it.

I was going to get the Lonely Island's Incredibad yesterday but didn't know that Best Buy had sold out all of its copies by then. I was on the way to work and after went to a sort of gathering, so I couldn't devote too much time to coming across it. Did you actually ask someone for it, or just look on the shelves? Because I didn't see it anywhere in the store and had to ask someone for it. They were still in a box and weren't put out yet because the box was labeled to not put them out before reading the enclosed special instructions. And there were no special instructions inside. So, for that day at least, they seemed to be selling it to inquiring customers only. If that's the same thing you ran into, then Universal Republic totally f***ed up their release week (as advertised in Best Buy's weekly ad, mind you) and somebody ought to be fired for that. Anyway, that's the first CD I bought since that huge release week back at Thanksgiving. In between, I've added a few burned CDs: A former co-worker's annual mix CD of Christmas novelty songs A mix CD of my family's longstanding mixtape of Christmas songs that's older than me (and my brother, for that matter.) Beck - Modern Guilt Chris Brown - Exclusive: The Forever Edition Bullet for My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire (with Japanese bonus track "No Easy Way Out," which I discussed in my Top 50 albums list)Fall Out Boy - Folie a Deux (with "Beat It" tacked on)Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll!!! (using the EP versions of the first six songs, as those all are preceded by random old movie dialogue. It should also be noted that "Highway 1" was replaced with "Broadway" when the full album was released, so I squeezed in "Broadway" between original album tracks 6 & 7)H 2O (Ha! I'm now consciously aware of the sub- and superscript buttons on the "post message" page. ) - Nothing to Prove By the way, I just went ahead and lopped off the cumbersome "(incl. legal downloads)" from the topic title. I felt it was getting in between me and my fans.

First, I was looking and saw the very tiny spot for it on the "sale" rack with the new releases where they are. Then I looked at the possible sections in the store where it could possibly have been. When that turned out unsuccessful I asked an employee there about it. He told me they were out and that the location carrying it was at sort of a distance. That one sort of duped me out.

I started going to the library again.
Alkaline Trio - Agony & Irony The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Band of Horses - Cease To Begin Blink-182 - Enema of the State Carolina Liar - Coming To Terms Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Eric Clapton - The Cream of Clapton Dr. Dre - Chronicles - Death Row Classics The Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia... Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand Garbage - Absolute Garbage Green Day - Dookie (replacing cassette copy)
A good place to check out some s*** I know I'd never buy. I was already at my limit already, but I noticed some CD's by The Kills and The Foals...groups like that and I'm like "Hey, I've never heard a single damn song by either of them but I bet I already know exactly how they sound!" So I might get those next time.

Finally made it into Manhattan to join the rummaging at Virgin Megastore in Union Store. They're shutting their doors on Sunday, so everything was 80% off. If my finances were in better order, I'd have taken some fliers on at least a couple more CDs, but I decided to stick with the ones I absolutely wanted, plus a DVD I'm giving my mother for her birthday. Of course, the downside is I'll rarely see CDs for those prices again, so that's what makes the decisions so tough.
The Tings Tings - We Started Nothing Lifehouse - Who We Are Shiny Toy Guns - Season of Poison Coldplay - Prospekt's March
It's interesting to see what's left over at these going out of business sales. I saw at least 20 copies of Reel Life by Boy Meets Girl something I can hardly remember ever seeing in a store before, and a few dozen Hannah Montana CDs, among others.
Also in the last few months: U2 - No Line on the Horizon Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown Matchbox Twenty - More Than You Think You Know ($1.99 at the Goodwill) The Police - Outlandos D'Amour

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command ($5 at Warped Tour's section of Fearless. Yes, the reissue.)
Jumping on the bandwagon: Michael Jackson - Off the Wall Michael Jackson - Thriller (Though I heard this 3-4 years ago.)
& then I upgraded Ministry's Twitch to CD, only $6 list price.

I'm going to get murdered at the record store in September:
9/1 Reverend Horton Heat The Used
9/11 Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3 (maybe)
9/15 Muse
9/22 Brand New
9/29 Alice in Chains AFI Paramore
Jesus Christ. I won't have any time to appreciate any of this stuff. And if not for Adam Yauch's cancer (very treatable, thank God), the new Beastie Boys album would still be in the middle of the month there.

I've been torturing myself trying to find Spring Session M by Missing Persons somewhere, but amazingly, a clerk at FYE told me the album's out of print. I know the album's 25 years old, but it's not like these guys were some obscure act that never made an impact; I mean, at the time, these guys were considered the face of new wave music. I considered getting it from iTunes, but, for some reason, it doesn't come with the two bonus tracks the physical album has. The only place that seems to have it is Amazon.com. Incredibly, however, the lowest price being offered for it is $47.99. Forty-seven ninety-nine?!?! WT-f***in'-F! And mind you, this isn't some super-enhanced version with 100 bonus tracks or Dale Bozzio personally coming to your house to sing every song. This is a regular CD with 12 songs and two bonus tracks. And people say Wal-Mart is bad. Well, I caved and decided to download the album from Amazon, deciding I'll never see the CD without becoming a multi-millionaire first to justify the expense. I did manage to find the album on cassette at Goodwill, but considering I don't have a cassette player and even if I did, I have no way of putting the songs onto my computer or my iPod, that was no good to me. I had a $5.00 credit for buying textbooks from Amazon, but it expired today, so I was in a jam as far as deciding what to use it on. It was either this at $7.99 or the new Paramore album at $3.99 (!) plus the new Foo Fighters song. As much as I want the new Paramore album, I don't know, I couldn't bring myself to just get an MP3 album for a band I like and respect as much as them. I'd rather have the CD, even if it means paying at least $6.00 more. (And I'll have to gamble that my mother will want to go to the mall on Saturday and offer to pay for the CD if she has the money. I'm not going to directly ask her to pay for it, of course, but I think I'll have to get the album one way or another on Saturday. Of course, had I just downloaded the Paramore album, then I could have the same dilemma about getting AFI's new album, instead.) All this means I'm gonna be a music curmudgeon 20 years from now who'd rather have his music on the archaic format known as compact disc rather than whatever newfangled format is popular then.

It helped that a Social Distortion hoodie was $5 beyond my price limit and that blink-182 wasn't selling the hoodie I was interested in buying at their show. Forgot Thrice and Kid Cudi had new discs on the 15th. I streamed both of those at least twice and Jay-Z's at least 3 times and ultimately couldn't justify rushing out and buying any of them on sale the first week. The only reason I don't have Muse yet is because I literally did not have time to buy it until that Saturday and held out for the Best Buy deluxe edition with the DVD. It was sold out and all the other St. Louis Best Buys were sold out as well. It was backordered. I went home and ordered it online so I could still get the sale price. It's projected to get here sometime this coming week. Other than that, Atreyu and 30 Seconds to Mars are the only new albums this year I know I'll have to get.

Since October, I bought:
Muse - The Resistance (CD/DVD) (ordered online from Best Buy, since the stores were all out of this version; arrived in my mail box the first week of October) Atreyu - The Congregation of the Damned (Best Buy deluxe version with 2 bonus tracks) Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster (With four A-A+ singles now under its belt, I knew I was gonna buy The Fame at some point. However, I wanted an original copy of the album, so I just bought the single-disc EP version of The Fame Monster. I tried to locate a used copy of The Fame that same night, so I wouldn't have to pay any more than $10, but none of the local record stores had it used. When I got home, it dawned on me that Yourmusic.com (formerly BMG) sells all CDs for $6.99 with no S&H fees. What's more, to promote the holiday shopping season kickoff, all CDs were $5.99. So I had to wait another couple of weeks, but I got a new copy of The Fame for less than I would've gotten a used one that same night. And for my own principle, I waited until I listened to my copy of The Fame before popping in The Fame Monster for the first time. I was thrilled when I realized all the lyrics were printed in both discs.) Clipse - Til the Casket Drops Timbaland - Shock Value II 30 Seconds to Mars - This Is War
Next week I'll buy Mudvayne's new self-titled disc (I wouldn't be surprised if it's also their last), and then I can put a wrap on the year.
Just based on streaming and downloading other albums this year, I know for sure I'll eventually have to purchase real copies of these: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3 Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day NOFX - Coaster 311 - Uplifter (if it were an unfamiliar band, though, I doubt I'd even burn it to disc.)

Just about ending the year: Brand New - Daisy Passion Pit - Manners Lenny Kravitz - Greatest Hits (used)
After hearing it I might pull out for Metric's Fantasies soon enough. I didn't buy near as much this year as '06-'08. I'm sort of... more caught up in my collection. Also, I'm currently streaming through Porcupine Tree and will do the same with Clipse.

I didn't buy near as much this year as '06-'08. First of all, I have next to no disposable income right now and haven't worked at a record store in a couple of years now, unfortunately. I pay for new releases I want with cash from tips, I keep $100 in cash at all times and always replace whatever I have to take out of that $100. Any tips left over go into the bank. Seeing as how I've got hundreds of burned CDs in my collection that I still have yet to get to (and rarely feel any urgency), I've become very selective about what I'll burn off a copy of. And aside from that, my hard drive is too full for me to freely download whatever I'm interested in checking out anymore, so unless it's really important, I stream a lot of stuff on MySpace, or failing that, stream stuff a la carte on YouTube. I see what all I've burned off and have yet to listen to and I actually regret wasting an audio CD on a lot of them. I'd much rather have condensed the stuff on mp3 discs and just write down what all's on 'em.
