Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster (With four A-A+ singles now under its belt, I knew I was gonna buy The Fame at some point. However, I wanted an original copy of the album, so I just bought the single-disc EP version of The Fame Monster. I tried to locate a used copy of The Fame that same night, so I wouldn't have to pay any more than $10, but none of the local record stores had it used. When I got home, it dawned on me that Yourmusic.com (formerly BMG) sells all CDs for $6.99 with no S&H fees. What's more, to promote the holiday shopping season kickoff, all CDs were $5.99. So I had to wait another couple of weeks, but I got a new copy of The Fame for less than I would've gotten a used one that same night. And for my own principle, I waited until I listened to my copy of The Fame before popping in The Fame Monster for the first time. I was thrilled when I realized all the lyrics were printed in both discs.)The cool thing about the 2-CD version of The Fame Monster is that it actually has artwork and liner notes from both albums. The back of the booklet is the cover of The Fame with the second half of the booklet printed with the artwork from it. Not to mention that the The Fame disc contains more tracks than the original Canadian release of the album. It was a nice surprise.

I'd say my '09 purchases have far exceeded my '08 purchases and even my '07s as well. I'd have to check to make sure, but that's mainly from the bands I'm most interested in having held out from '08 and released new material this year. Those basically account for 95% of my purchases.
The CD's I only have burning interest in, I rarely have interest in them for any other purpose besides random shuffling. And that's unfortunate, because I know I'm missing out on something out there, and it's not the way it's intended to be listened to by the ones creating the songs themselves. I do devote every Friday to random shuffling though. Just putting 7900+ songs on shuffle and letting 'em fly.

I also ended up buying way more CDs than last year. Probably because now that I'm not at work/school/on the bus 24/7 I actually have more time to hear and buy new music...and I'm making up for the CDs I didn't get the past year. That and all the stores going out of business/having massive sales. I tried to stop buying CDs again this year...it didn't work. It worked even worse than last time. This year's acquisitions (first, a few categories worth mentioning): Virgin Megastore This was a poor excuse for a going out of business sale. Before liquidation most CDs were on sale for $10 anyway. They removed the stickers but by the last day all CDs were still only 50% off, making them $9.50. Nonetheless, when this store died a part of me died & I was still able to find a few 'diamonds in the rough':Air - Moon Safari (10th Anniv. 2CD+DVD) Asobi Seksu - Hush China Crisis - Collection Nik Kershaw - You've Got to Laugh Talk Talk - Asides Besides (2CD) Circuit CityThis sale was much better; I got most of these for $4-$7. Even though the selection wasn't as good, it was still nowhere near as picked over. I was still surprised at how many CDs by mainstream-ish acts were still left when everything was 50-70% off though.Blaqk Audio - Cex Cells Blue October - History for Sale Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging In Me Counting Crows - Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings Genesis - Turn It On Again: The Hits (2CD) Hellogoodbye - Zombies!Vampires!Aliens!Monsters! (or some other order...I don't feel like looking it up right now) Keane - Perfect Symmetry Lifehouse - Who We Are Michael Lington - Heat Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul Ryan Adams & the Cardinals - Cardinology ZZ/Various: ThriveMix Electro (2CD) fyeI have no idea how they ended up being the last remaning music chain. And now all single disc CDs are $9.99 here , which means the record industry is in dire straits. Additionally, all their new clearance CDs were list $7.88 with an additional 75% off which made these $1.97 each. I guess no one wanted to pay $19.99 for them...oh well.John Hiatt - Riding With the King Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville Pete Yorn - Nightcrawler Peter Murphy - Unshattered Straylight Run The Waifs - Up All Night CDs from FranceA-Ha - Major Earth, Minor Sky Bob Sinclair - Western Dream Caesars - Paper Tigers (Japanese Import) (from Book Off, the used Japanese media chain. They are also all over SoCal, which is where I'm guessing Sunny got those $7 Japanese imports from in SD. I'm Furious there aren't any up in Northern California.)Eskobar - A Thousand Last Chances Franz Ferdinand - Tonight/Blood (2CD) Kasabian - Club Foot (Japanese Import) Simple Minds - Graffiti Soul/Searching For the Lost Boys (2CD) I could have gotten this cheaper from cd-wow.com but being that this wasn't released in the US and I was in Europe on its release date, I thought it would be cool to walk into Virgin.fr, which is still alive and well for now, & buy it on its release date.)ZZ/Various: Mega 80 (4CDs of French New Wave hits) ZZ/Various: Mega 80 2 (4CDs of more French New Wave hits) the rest (new):The Airborne Toxic Event Among the Oak and Ash (signed) (Josh Joplin's new band w/ Garrison Starr. I saw them and if anyone remembers last time I met him, I was every bit the 'NSync fan when I met him again. He didn't remember.)Bat for Lashes - Two Suns (CD+DVD) Bruce Hornsby - Intersections: 1985-2005 (4CD+DVD Box Set) Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers - Levitate David Gray - Draw the Line (2CD Deluxe) Duran Duran - Rio (2CD Deluxe Remaster) Feist - Open Season: The Remixes The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound Glasvegas Gregorian - Masters of Chant Volume VI Imogen Heap - Ellipse (2CD Deluxe) Kings of Leon - Only By the Night Mat Kearney - City of Black & White (signed) Moby - Wait for Me (Australian Import 2CD) Pet Shop Boys - Yes, Etc. (2CD) Peter Bjorn & John - Living Thing/Seaside Rock (2CD...saw 'em but I had them sign Writer's Block instead) Simple Minds - Black & White 050505 Snow Patrol - Up to Now (2CD + DVD) Thom Yorke - The Eraser (for some reason this was $2.50 at Barnes & Noble)Tosca - No Hassle (2CD) Utada - This is the One Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! ZZ/Various: 12"/80s (3CD) ZZ/Various: 12"/80s/Pop (3CD) ZZ/Various: 12"/80s/ElectroPop (3CD) ZZ/Various: 80s/12" Extended Collection (2CD) ZZ/Various: ThriveMix Electro 2 (2CD) the rest (used):Beautiful People - If 60s Were 90s Big Head Todd & the Monsters - Sister Sweetly The Blessing - Prince of the Deep Water The Blue Nile - Peace at Last Doves - Affinity Glen Phillips - Winter Pays for Summer Len - We Be Who We Be (an advance of their follow-up which was never released...this CD sucks as much as the first) Minnie Driver - Seastories Mocean Worker - Enter the MoWo! Kanye West VH1 Storytellers (CD + DVD) (didn't even know this existed until I was at Futureshop and it was under New Release) Yeah, I read late last year that was coming out. I bought it the first day at Best Buy 2 weeks ago, however, I still haven't even opened it yet. I just haven't had any free time to set aside for watching it. (I bought it mostly for the DVD, since I saw some of the show last fall at a friend's house and the stage set looked amazing.)

I was watching it while I was cleaning my apartment last night and I thought it was pretty good, although not as good as his actual live shows as the production value was actually lower. But I was disappointed that 1) it was censored (I suppose it was because it was on VH1, but still, this was a recording) and 2) he didn't perform "Love Lockdown", not even as one of the 4 bonus tracks.
But for 14.99, I really couldn't complain. Not to mention his excessively long rants and "freestyles" between each track are rather entertaining. In fact, I'd say they were as entertaining as his actual performances.
The case says that its original airdate was in February 2009. I wonder what took it so long to come out on recording.

I've always torn out those Emusic free trial membership cards offering X number of downloads from my magazines and held onto them for a little while, then thrown them away, when I've lost interest or the deal expires. I'd been holding onto two of those cards, both offering 25 downloads, until a month ago when I received an offer for 35 downloads inside the package of the USB flash drive I'd just bought. I let that offer sit around on my desk until last week, when I finally bit the bullet and signed up, only to notice that the website had increased the USB offer from 35 to 50 downloads.
The only problem was, there really aren't a whole lot of a la carte songs I'm dying to download anymore at this point. I have a list of songs I want that spreads across 5 pages in two columns of 8-pt font, but I wasn't finding much in the way of stuff that was actually worthy of being legally downloaded. (It's like when a genie grants you three wishes, you want to make them count. You don't want to waste any when there might be something you'd want more.) This document had been scarcely updated in the past 5 years. I also have an annual list of noteworthy singles I compile as each year goes on, which, in 10-pt font, usually averages 26 pages come December 31. So I combed through the past 4½ years of these, picking out stuff I wanted, but also stuff I wanted to hear. (I'm not sure I ever hear even half of the singles I keep a running list of for any given year.)
So of all the songs I considered downloading, plus all the songs I bookmarked as possibilities from combing through my last 5 years' worth of "Single" lists, Emusic didn't have half of them. Of the remaining 50%, half of those weren't available for trial membership downloads, or were available only if you downloaded the whole album. So here are the 50 songs I ended up downloading from the selection available to me:
All That Remains "Two Weeks" Love this song more than ever, but was torn as to whether I wanted to download it now or just wait until one day when I illegally download the whole album, which I don't expect to play more than a couple of times. American Head Charge "Loyalty" Animal Collective "My Girls" If I'll probably never listen to the whole album (or like it if I do), I can at least get behind this song. Band of Horses "Detlef Schrempf" Randomly named after the former NBA star, I didn't hear this song until one night the Cease to Begin album was used as house music at the Pageant. Like my dilemma with the All That Remains song, this was also one I debated waiting for when I one day download the whole album and am unlikely to play it much. Big B feat. Scott Russo "Sinner" Nice breezy, disposable single from a Suburban Noize rapper, whose music I'd otherwise hate, duetting with Unwritten Law's frontman. Phil Collins "Everyday" Second single from his 1993 album, Both Sides. An Adult Contemporary/VH1 ballad I remember from 6th grade that wasn't on his greatest hits album later in the decade. Clutch "Burning Beard" The promoted video from Robot Hive/Exodus, where Neil Fallon played a preacher. At one point late in the video, why yes, his beard was burning. Clutch "10001110101" The radio single from the same album. Don't know why the song and video were different songs. It's amusing hearing Neil sing, "One-zero, zero-zero-one-one, one-zero, one-zero, one!" The Cool Kids "Black Mags" Hipster-approved Chicago rap duo, rapping about the rims on their BMX bikes. Like All That Remains and Band of Horses, this is one I was hesitant to download because I'm sure I'll download their albums sometime later this year. The Corrs "Runaway" Cowboy Troy feat. M. Shadows "Buffalo Stampede" Had to hear what this sounded like. About what I expected. Cowboy Troy is a rapper in Big & Rich's Muzik Mafia collective, and Avenged enlisted one of their singers to do backup vocals on a couple tracks from their last album. Cradle of Filth feat. Ville Valo "The Byronic Man" Cradle of Filth "Stay" [Shakespear's Sister cover] Didn't even know this existed (it's on the deluxe version of Thornography) until I was looking to download the other COF song. Default "Deny" Arguably Default's only good song, over the years I got burned twice with versions of this mp3 that weren't the album version I knew and enjoyed. Dope "People Are People" [Depeche Mode cover] Dope declined sharply over the years since their '99 debut (and were probably never as cool or worthwhile as I once thought they were), so I was cautious in hearing this DM cover from their third album. While I knew it could never hold a candle to the original, it could've turned out a lot worse. Dorrough "Ice Cream Paint Job" Disposable song from last year that I was barely aware of, but quickly grew fond of, once a white-collar friend told me how much he and some of his co-workers were into it. This, of all songs! 8Ball & MJG "Pimp Hard" From my first semester at college. I hated it at the time, but somehow in the years since I've remembered it fondly because it's so stupid. Fast Life Yungstaz (F.L.Y.) "Swag Surfin" Disposable, but catchy-as-hell song from last year. The Flaming Lips "Spongebob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" Judy Garland "Over the Rainbow" Never did own a copy of this song. Gorilla Zoe "Echo" Another disposable, yet catchy-as-hell song from last year. Couldn't believe it was Gorilla Zoe, because there's not really any rapping in it. Grizzly Bear "Two Weeks" See Animal Collective. Missy Higgins "Where I Stood" A misty-eyed one for me, because I can relate to it. Hurt "Wars" The first Hurt song that I actually liked and it softened my dislike of their previous work. In This Moment "Forever" See All That Remains, Band of Horses, and the Cool Kids. Alan Jackson "I Still Like Bologna" Good song about his slow adaptation to technology and the simple things in life he still enjoys. Cledus T. Judd feat. Brooks & Dunn "Garth Must Be Busy" Hilarious parody of B&D's "God Must Be Busy" about Garth's semi-retirement from music. Len feat. C.C. DeVille "Feelin' Alright" Little heard second single from the "Steal My Sunshine" one-hit wonders, featuring a guitar solo from none other than Poison's C.C. DeVille. Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz feat. Ice Cube "Real Nigga Roll Call" Lil' Keke feat. UGK & Paul Wall "Chunk Up the Deuce" Video I only saw once or twice on BET's Rap City four years ago, promoting an album which apparently never came out until a year or two ago, sans this song. Nas "Made You Look" You'd think I would've had this 2002 Nas single by now, but no. Stevie Nicks "Edge of Seventeen" Didn't realize until looking at some Fleetwood Mac singles I'm mildly interested in, that I still didn't own this song I love or even have it on my list. Overkill "Hello From the Gutter" If not for Beavis and Butt-head making fun of its video (except for the animated flying skull, the band logo which Avenged Sevenfold may or may not have ripped off) years ago, I never would've heard this cheesy-as-hell song, which I actually grew interested in once I remembered it earlier this year. Pearl Jam "Brother" Pleasure P "Under" Didn't like "Boyfriend #2" and ignored/overlooked whatever his first single was, because I didn't realize yet that he used to be in Pretty Ricky. Despite hating everything he'd been previously associated with, for whatever reason, I really liked this song. Rednex "Cotton Eye Joe" RuPaul "Supermodel" Senses Fail "Calling All Cars" Senses Fail "Salvation" [Cranberries remake] Like COF's "Stay," I didn't know this existed (also a deluxe edition exclusive) until I was downloading "Calling All Cars." I looked this up on Wikipedia, assuming it was a Rancid cover, if not an irrelevant original. Covering this Cranberries song is way more interesting to me than if it had been the Rancid song, much as I love Rancid. Senses Fail "Family Tradition" Sonny & Cher "I Got You Babe" Like "Over the Rainbow," another classic I never had a copy of. South Central Cartel "Ya Getz Clowned" Remember this all the way from its video on The Box way back in 1992. Never heard it (or of them) anywhere else. Space "Female of the Species" A long forgotten minor Alternative radio hit from 1997. Hadn't heard it since then, either. Static-X "Destroyer" Went ahead and downloaded this single because, realistically, I'm never going to get around to listening to Cannibal, or anything since, if I haven't even gotten around to listening to Start a War or Shadow Zone in four years of owning burned copies of them. Britney Spears "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" Britney Spears "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" Above two are her only two singles left off of her 2004 greatest hits collection, which I'll get around to buying a dirt cheap, probably used, copy of eventually. Sunscreem "Love You More" Dance chart and Alternative radio hit (and pop crossover) from 1993. Believe it or not, poppy club songs and the Alternative/Modern Rock chart weren't mutually exclusive way back then, depending on the artist. Matthew Sweet "Girlfriend" Unlikely to ever get around to listening to the whole album. Unwritten Law "Save Me" Unwritten Law "She Says" Two singles from their widely panned most recent studio album.

I was gonna wait and just update twice this year: at the end of June and the end of December, but since I went ahead and posted my 50 Emusic downloads, I'll just list all the albums I've added this year so far:
Kanye West - VH1 Storytellers [CD/DVD] (Still haven't watched it, though I bought it the first day, like I said earlier. Really only interested in the DVD. I don't have much use for the CD.) HIM - Screamworks (Love it.) Alkaline Trio - This Addiction (Really like it, but it doesn't have much replay value.) Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave (Spun it once, but refuse to listen to it until I've listened to II-V. I went back and started with I, which I've owned for 13 years, and really love and appreciate it now, but to date, I've only played III 2 or 3 times. If I finish it by the end of the month, I'll still be in good shape.) Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (Really haven't sat down with this yet, other than a couple of casual listens.) Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead Symphony [CD/DVD] (See Kanye West.) The Unbeheld - In the Arms of Mother Chaos (Psychedelic stoner metal band my college bff plays bass in. Admittedly difficult for me to get into because I don't listen to this type of rock much.)
The Faint - Danse Macabre ($7.99 used on Record Store Day. Replaces the burned copy I've had for 7 years, which had a mislabeled demo version of "Let the Poison Spill From Your Throat" instead of "Your Retro Career Melted.") William Shatner - Has Been ($5.99 used, RSD. Replaces my burned copy.) Britney Spears - Blackout ($4.99 used, RSD. Replaces the downloaded copy on my hard drive.)
Bleeding Through - s/t (Painful to wait 4 days and buy it directly from their merch table, but so worth it on principle.) B.o.B. - The Adventures of Bobby Ray (A cool disc, no doubt, but not as high-quality as I was expecting it to be.) NOFX - Coaster (Bought directly at their merch table. Never even downloaded it, as it was so good, I knew I'd be holding out for a physical copy.) Deftones - Diamond Eyes (Love it.) Lostprophets - The Betrayed (Friend burned it for me since it doesn't look it's seeing a U.S. release date anytime soon and I couldn't easily find a copy to download on my own by that point. Only listened to it a couple of times so far.) As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise (Haven't spent much in the way of quality time with it yet.) Lesser Key - Parallels (EP from local Deftones/Tool/Dredg/Isis-like band whose live set impressed me at work. Found this laying around the venue two days later.)
Four mix CDs a friend made for me, the first of which was designed to expose me to The National.
Stone Temple Pilots - s/t (A solid disc, no doubt, but quality time is needed with it before I can fairly assess it. Their heavy days seem to be fully a thing of the past now, I can say that much.)

I am surprised that it has been so long since I've replied! In fact, I have no posts on the most recent page. Around the turn of the year (mostly used): The Flaming Lips - Embryonic Assemblage 23 - Compass Assemblage 23 - Storm Paul McCartney - Wingspan: Hits and History (This all starts from talking to a girl about the Beatles around the time of the remasters and her talking about listening to the solo stuff. I think my parents liked a lot of Macca's '70's stuff. I haven't yet gotten Band on the Run, high on my wishlist.)Deftones - Around the Fur (promo copy, apparently.)John Lennon - Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon (I later heard Plastic Ono Band but didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to, but I liked Double Fantasy and may take a cheap used Imagine.)Placebo - Meds (CD/DVD) (The re-release put me off from buying it way sooner, happenings aside)Sublime - s/t (I don't know why I didn't get this way sooner.)Paul & Linda McCartney - Ram Sade - Soldier of Love Nice, quarter-cheap cassettes: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Prince - Dirty Mind Prince - Controversy Prince and the Revolution - Parade Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A. The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang Prince - 3121 (Cheap clearance CD that played just fine.)More cassettes (20 cents!): David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World (re-issue) David Bowie - Low Guns N' Roses - G'N'R Lies Paul McCartney - Off the Ground (I seem to remember my parents listening to "C'mon People," "Hope of Deliverance" and "Biker Like an Icon" at the time. Kind of a nostalgic pick.Peter Murphy - Love Hysteria (Very big "All Night Long" fan.)Tears for Fears - The Hurting (One of my favorite album cuts turned out to be "Memories Fade," which Kanye prominently interpolated on "Coldest Winter." I'd forgotten the credit by then, though.)Living Colour - Vivid ($3 used flea market.)Flea market cassettes (50 cents max.): The Cars - Heartbeat City (Curiously, the titles were all listed in Spanish. Realized it wasn't so bad when I played it and it was in English. ) Duran Duran - Rio (Oddly, my parents didn't own this on cassette, but they had the follow up, as well as Notorious and the oft-panned Liberty, although understandably they had Decade. "The Chaffeur" is their best non-single IMO and is arguably the best song on the album. Better than any album cut from the Wedding album, which I also have on tape.) Everclear - Sparkle & Fade Madonna - s/t Madonna - Like a Virgin The Police - Synchronicity (The untitled 2-disc comp has 8/11 of the songs, so I only really needed to hear 3 more songs to properly evaluate! I may try getting Ghost in the Machine since it has my favorite Police songs on it.)
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica "10th anniversary remaster" (Whoo-hoo! I bought Good News first only because the album got re-released with the added songs & new artwork which kind of put me off. I was unaware this was happening, otherwise I would have bought it at least a year before that album. Also, because that was cheap and the group was hot at the time. Intentionally, I would have gotten this physical first (there's other cases for sure, but they didn't affect the track listing and album art). It had a cheap list price so I took it. Actually, aside from the latest album, their catalog is generously priced.)
I should get around to the new Gorillaz some time. It just wasn't on the sales I've found, but since my first listen it's been the strong album-of-the-year contender for me. Also, I really liked the new Dillinger album when I first heard it. Easily my second favorite after Miss Machine, but I guess the Mike Patton EP wouldn't be too far behind (and possibly would challenge "easily").

Tears for Fears - The Hurting (One of my favorite album cuts turned out to be "Memories Fade," which Kanye prominently interpolated on "Coldest Winter." I'd forgotten the credit by then, though.)I can't believe I forgot to check out that song when I saw--two separate times--that Tears for Fears were in Kanye's liner notes. Geez. "Prominently" is right. It's really cool to see you going back and adding all that older stuff to your collection. I admire that and live vicariously. It's been like pulling teeth for me to invest any real time with much in the way of classic albums these past few years because I'm too busy trying to keep on top of albums from the current year and hear as much important stuff as possible.

Noooooo... I bought the regular version of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy since it was on sale at Best Buy, forgetting that there was a Deluxe Edition which they didn't have. Oh well, I have the "Runaway" film downloaded anyway in HD, which is probably in better quality than the DVD. Is the new Kid Cudi album any good? I wasn't impressed with his debut. I'll update my list soon.

Is the new Kid Cudi album any good? I wouldn't know. The debut is the one I bought, if you didn't notice. If you did notice and were asking anyway, in the hopeful assumption that I've listened to the new one already, I have not. It was such a low-profile release, too! I'm surprised they didn't push harder and just release it early next year. Kid Cudi isn't exactly a 4th quarter household name. By the way, are you sure your Best Buy didn't have the deluxe? When I went on Monday, they had tons of them.

Yeah, I checked, the deluxe edition was out of stock at the location I was at. And it's too late now, since I already opened the CD. Oh well.

December: T.I. - No Mercy [Former co-worker's annual Christmas novelty mix CD] To: Nick, From: [The Girl], December '10 (mix CD) Converge - Jane Doe (Christmas present from my parents, replaces burned copy of 4+ years)
January: Social Distortion - Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - s/t (replaces mp3 album given to me by The Girl)
It only recently occurred to me that I should really be counting all the albums I download, too, since I've all but stopped burning mp3 albums to disc and "officially" adding them to my collection. I think I need to re-evaluate what determines "official," anyway, because let's face it: I'm really only playing CDs anymore in the car and hardly ever in full at home. If anything, the predominant way I listen to music now is on my iPod at my day job and streaming current songs off All Access. And it's laughable to think I'd actually pay money to download albums I'm merely curious about. If I like them enough, sure, then I'll plop down some money for the disc. But if an album doesn't keep my interest level high all the way through, then I was never going to pay any money for it anyway, because the use I would be getting out of it past the first few listens would be negligible.
I determined that albums I downloaded as far back as August still feel recent enough to be worth mentioning. So here's August through December, when I had limited hard drive space:
The Esoteric - With the Sureness of Sleepwalking Katy Perry - Ur So Gay [EP] Katy Perry - One of the Boys Taxi Driver (score) Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans Atreyu - Covers of the Damned (EP) T.I. - No Mercy (Bonus Tracks)
January: Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - s/t Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest Deerhunter - Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. (Above 3 courtesy of The Girl) Girl Talk - All Day (In anticipation of his show)
February: (All four courtesy of The Girl) Broken Bells - Broken Bells Eels - End Times Interpol - s/t (So I could familiarize myself with it before their show) The Social Network (score)
Fitz and the Tantrums - Pickin' Up the Pieces (Post-show, after realizing that I did not, in fact, wish to purchase the CD anymore) Converge - Axe to Fall The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis The Gaslight Anthem - Sink or Swim Hatebreed - Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire It Dies Today - Sirens (Above six a splurge, after I finally cleared some space on my hard drive by hooking up my external for the first time)
Kanye West - G.O.O.D. Friday [weekly download series] (Because I had the hard drive space to download the rest of the tracks now) Ben Kweller - Sha Sha (A favorite of The Girl's, in anticipation for his show) Ke$ha - Animal Ke$ha - Cannibal (EP) (Caved in and downloaded these two after seeing her show.) Travis Barker - Let the Drummer Get Wicked (mixtape) Cage the Elephant - s/t Cage the Elephant - Thank You, Happy Birthday (The Girl is a new fan, believe it or not, particularly of the new album. Downloaded these in anticipation of their show, so I'd recognize more than the singles.)
Today: Dropkick Murphys - Going Out in Style (Downloaded in anticipation of their show. I wouldn't have bothered yet, but it looks like new songs make up nearly a third of their set.)

Albums from the mail I did receive (all of the expected), all used: The Afghan Whigs - 1965 The Beatles - Let It Be Common - Like Water for Chocolate The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works (Would have gotten it last year, if I were able to.)Haste - When Reason Sleeps (Not to confuse with Haste the Day. Oddly, this group also played metalcore. Oddly, their final album was released a year before HTD's debut.. haha!)Downloads that were available in MP3 format (and therefore, in my iPod): Black Flag - Slip It In The Clash - Cut the Crap Prince - Around the World in a Day Prince - Planet Earth Rancid - s/t [1993] (Also, many individual tracks not from these albums in this one.) Through subscription service, I have a bunch of albums, really (all 2011 acquisitions!): Stuff I'm familiar with: Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose (Also added Former Clarity, though I once had it on previous hard drive.)The Blood Brothers - Crimes Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime Finch - Say Hello to Sunshine (Too bad I didn't listen much when I streamed it at the time. Listening now, I realize that they were making a heavy album that was stronger and simply dropped the pop-punk and "screamo"-ish moments of the debut LP. I think I found a cheap copy online & might get it on CD.)Leftover Crack - Mediocre Generica (Some of my high school friends used to listen to them.)Machines of Loving Grace - Concentration mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Mudvayne - The End of All Things to Come (See last sentence of Finch. Honestly, I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did.)Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Pixies - Bossanova Primal Scream - XTRMNTR Rage Against the Machine - s/t Slowdive - Souvlaki The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come (I think the former is way overrated, while I think the latter is sort of underrated.)VCR - (EP) Violent Femmes - The Blind Leading the Naked Stuff I've also listened to & can at least remember: The Afghan Whigs - Congregation The Blood Brothers - Young Machetes Eric B. & Rakim - Follow the Leader Blur - The Best Of (Good enough for me to add the group's last 4 studio albums)Brother Ali - Us Cake - Fashion Nugget Can - Tago Mago The Clash - Sandinista! Daughters - Canada Songs Daughters - s/t Don Caballero - Don Caballero 2 Don Caballero - What Burns Never Returns Don Caballero - Singles Breaking Up, Vol. 1 Earthsuit - Kaleidoscope Superior (Paul Meany's pre-Mute Math group. I remembered hearing "One Time" at the time.)Brian Eno - Another Green World Error - (EP) Eve 6 - s/t Everclear - So Much for the Afterglow Finch (EP) Fleetwood Mac - s/t [1975] Nelly Furtado - Looser Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for Zero Kanada (EP) Goodie Mob - Soul Food Goodie Mob - Still Standing Husker Du - Zen Arcade K-Os - Joyful Rebellion Mastodon - Remission Mastodon - Leviathan Ministry - Dark Side of the Spoon Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice Mandy Moore - s/t The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die N.W.A. - Efil4zaggin Opeth - Blackwater Park Pink Floyd - Meddle Primal Scream - Screamadelica Sarah McLachlan - Closer: The Best Of [limited/extended version] The Modern Lovers - s/t Sun Ra - Sleeping Beauty Semisonic - Great Divide Slipknot - s/t Slipknot - Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) The Smiths - s/t Sparta - Wiretap Scars Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup Stiffed - Burned Again (Santi White's group)The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary Thursday - War All the Time Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety Van Halen - s/t Weezer - Hurley Wings - Back to the Egg Wire - Pink Flag (Maybe later this year I'll be fully familiar.Zombi - Cosmos John Zorn - Naked City Many others: nh.

Downloads of the past 3 weeks: Goon Moon - Licker's Last Leg (Album from Jeordie White's - a.k.a. Twiggy Ramirez - band I'd somehow never heard of. The Girl insisted I borrow this from her last September the first time she ever took me to her house. I finally ripped it to my computer a couple weeks ago. )Archie Bronson Outfit - Coconut (Album from a band The Girl likes, who I apparently liked a song or two from when she played them for me on her iPod awhile back. She bought a CD copy when she took a trip to California at the beginning of the month and loaned it to me before she ever took it home, I believe.)Archie Bronson Outfit - Derdang Derdang (Previous album from them, which The Girl also bought a clearance-priced used copy of from the same store. She insisted I borrow it when I returned her Goon Moon and Coconut CDs. )Radiohead - The King of Limbs Orgone - The Killion Floor Orgone - Bacano Orgone - Cali Fever Orgone - Killion Vaults (Orgone is a largely instrumental soul/funk/Latin band from California. I first heard of them last fall when they opened for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. I was mesmerized by watching them play, particularly by their Latin percussionist: a white guy wearing a flat-brimmed ballcap, baggy jeans, a white tee and sneakers, but especially by their trombonist: a tall, slim cowboy. Orgone has since opened two more shows I've seen, the most recent being this past week and the reason I downloaded the 4/5 of their discography that I could find beforehand. I'd planned on buying up all their albums at the show, but in listening to them beforehand, I realized the music by itself isn't something I'd find myself listening to much.)Lupe Fiasco - Lasers (I think I made the right choice in not purchasing this the first week out of obligation and instead noting the mixed reviews and the merely decent singles I've heard.)Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (Ditto. Only this seemingly rushed album was so under the radar, I don't think I actually heard any of the under-marketed singles beforehand.)Also, I tried to go buy Travis Barker's album at Best Buy this past week, but they were sold out of the deluxe version. I ordered it online yesterday. Based on his mixtape, though, I have a feeling it's not going to be something I get a whole lot of mileage from and that I'm buying it more to check it out and support him rather than to be excited about the tracks.

Didn't realize I hadn't updated in this long. First of all, let me say that I enjoyed Lasers so much that I wish I had bought it the first week now. Oh well. Better to have erred on the side of caution. March:Downloads: Homefront: Songs for the Resistance (I guess this is a video game soundtrack, if I recall correctly. It features fairly popular underground metal bands (As I Lay Dying, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Acacia Strain, Winds of Plague, iwrestledabearonce, etc.) covering classic songs by the likes of Slayer, Public Enemy, Muse, Black Sabbath, Metallica, CCR, Buffalo Springfield, Pink Floyd, U2 and others.)Garbage - The B-Sides (1995-2008) (Comprehensive bootleg compilation of every b-side they've ever done, half of which I had to track down in the '90s through domestic and import singles.)Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More (went ahead and downloaded this finally because they're coming to town)Tears for Fears - The Hurting (Downloaded specifically for "Mad World" and "Memories Fade.")Eminem - Relapse: Refill (bonus tracks only)Salem - King Night (Streamed this back in December after reading an intriguing review in Rolling Stone.)CDs: Travis Barker - Give the Drummer Some [deluxe edition] Radiohead - The King of Limbs (replaces mp3 version)April:CDs: Foo Fighters - Wasting Light Ripped from the library: The B-52's - s/t Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago James Brown - Live at the Apollo Kings of Leon - Only by the Night TV on the Radio - Dear Science (Gerard Smith would die 5 days later. )The Cure - Galore: The Singles 1987-1997 Ministry - Twitch Requiem for a Dream [film score] Above 3 purchased used on Record Store Day.The White Stripes - Get Behind Me SatanDeerhunter - Halcyon Digest (replaces mp3 version The Girl gave me in January)Wolf Parade - Expo 86 The Black Keys - Brothers (Record Store Day purchases from a different store. Used copy of GBMS was mistakenly bought back with the Icky Thump disc inside. I took store credit and applied it to the above three, all of which were in the New Arrivals used bin and are also albums I'd been hoping to commission The Girl to make her signature original artwork sleeves for, but she hadn't had any time to do it so far this year. She had an idea for a Brothers sleeve, while I had ideas for the other two.)Mumford & Sons - Sign No More (Enjoyed it so much that I bought it on sale at Best Buy for $10.)Winds of Plague - Against the World The Kills - Blood Pressures (burned for me by The Girl)Downloads: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife The Decemberists - The King Is Dead (In anticipation of their show)Ripped from the library: Drake - Thank Me Later Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (CD came with a crack right through it, so I just went ahead and downloaded a copy.)The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love Etta James - At Last! (Didn't realize until 10 days later (tonight), wondering why I couldn't find it to cross off my wish list, that I'd already bought a used copy over three years ago that still sits on my shelf unlistened. Whoops. I f***ed up. )Rick Ross - Teflon Don May:Downloads: Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing (In anticipation of their show)The Strokes - Angles (really only downloaded this one this soon because The Girl wanted it. Took me awhile to flush out a working download from a source I trusted.)CDs: Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing (Purchased for $10 each at their merch table)Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two Dredg - Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy Ripped from the library: Fleetwood Mac - s/t M.I.A. - Kala George Michael - Faith Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Prince - Sign o' the Times

Ripped from the library:Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come (Impulse item. Knew I wanted to look into an Ornette Coleman album at some point. Taken from my buddy's iTunes: Band of Horses - Infinite Arms Blur - The Best of Blur (Potential replacement for the skip-littered copy I ripped from the radio station 5 years ago) Bon Iver - s/t Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - It's a Corporate World The Flaming Lips - Embryonic Florence & the Machine - Lungs (For some reason, iTunes doesn't acknowledge "You've Got the Love" from the version I (illegally) downloaded last month) Foster the People - Torches The Get Up Kids - Four Minute Mile Cee Lo Green - The Lady Killer Grinderman - Grinderman 2 Janis Joplin - Pearl Santogold - s/t Spoon - Kill the Moonlight Spoon - Transference TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones Tom Waits - Bone Machine The XX - xx
Ripped from my dad's collection The Beatles - Rubber Soul The Beatles - Revolver The Beatles - Let It Be Neil Young - After the Gold Rush Above four to replace my versions with files that are more versatile, a preferable size, and/or of a known, quality origin Ottmar Liebert - Nouveau Flamenco Bette Midler - Some People's Lives Bonnie Raitt - Nine Lives Bonnie Raitt - Luck of the Draw Above four fondly remembered from my childhood Tony Bennett - The All-Time Greatest Hits Sam Cooke - The Best of Sam Cooke The Drifters - Sixteen Greatest Hits Roy Orbison - The All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 Paul Simon - Graceland Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Greatest Hits Girl Group Greats [compilation] Billboard Hot 100 #1 Songs: September 19XX - May 19XX (For a high school reunion, my parents and their classmates were given the opportunity to access an mp3 folder collecting all these songs. I don't know if it was a labeling oversight by the class president, or my dad when he fit them all on 3 discs, but on his CDs (sans tracklisting) they were simply labeled as "Pop Music" with the range of years listed afterward. Back at home, manually editing the mp3 information myself, I looked up the lyrics to the songs I didn't know (which was most of them). I got halfway through the first disc before realizing via Wikipedia that the songs were all the #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits of these years, arranged chronologically. My sorting job became a piece of cake after that.)

Bad Religion - All Ages (esp. since I didn't know what studio album to start with. Wouldn't mind a collection of songs from after this.)That sounds like a job for me. They have 14 studio albums (15 if you count their career-derailing second album Into the Unknown), so I'll recommend two songs from each and you can either check them out on your own, or I can upload them via our FTP, if you like. How Could Hell Be Any Worse?: We're Only Gonna Die, F**k Armageddon...This Is Hell Suffer: You Are (The Government), Do What You Want No Control: I Want to Conquer the World, You Against the Grain: Anesthesia, Faith Alone Generator: Generator, Atomic Garden (Would you rather I recommend tracks from these albums not found on All Ages?)Recipe for Hate: American Jesus, Struck a Nerve [featuring Johnette Napolitano] Stranger Than Fiction: Infected, 21st Century (Digital Boy) The Gray Race: A Walk, Punk Rock Song No Substance: Shades of Truth, In So Many Ways The New America: You've Got a Chance, New America The Process of Belief: Sorrow, The Defense The Empire Strikes First: Sinister Rouge, Los Angeles Is Burning New Maps of Hell: New Dark Ages, Grains of Wrath The Dissent of Man: The Day the Earth Stalled, The Resist Stance

The Devil Wears Prada - Zombie (EP) Parkway Drive - Deep Blue
Volbeat - The Strength/The Sound/The Songs Volbeat - Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil Volbeat - Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood Volbeat - Beyond Hell/Above Heaven
MC Ren - Kizz My Black Azz (EP)
My Morning Jacket - Circuital
Crosses - s/t (EP) [free download - side project of Chino from the Deftones and Shaun Lopez from Far]
EDIT: Somehow forgot to list The Lonely Island's Turtleneck & Chain and Manchester Orchestra's Simple Math back on the day they came out.
Also forgot to list here yesterday that I bought these CDs, which came in the mail last week:
Arcade Fire - Funeral Arcade Fire - Neon Bible Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Cold - Superfiction All of which replace my mp3 copies. I had to download Superfiction in the meantime because the Amazon order wasn't due to arrive until after I had seen Cold's show and I wanted to know any new songs they played (of which there ended up being 5, so good thing.)
Finally, after recently reading an article about their career in Rolling Stone, I was inspired last night to download music by The Cars. I realized their '85 Greatest Hits album doesn't have all their songs that I want (and is premature) and downloading all their studio albums instead was proving to be too difficult and unnecessary of a task. Instead, I discovered the tracklist for their double-disc hits collection, Just What I Needed, had all the songs I "needed" after all, plus 14 I didn't. So I deleted those and retitled the folder Just What I Really Needed: The Cars Anthology Condensed.

^ . (However, I think The Complete Greatest Hits added on six more.) The main omission I noticed on it was "Moving in Stereo." I also remembered hearing "Broken" from Process at the time several times. Yesterday, "Sinister Rouge" came up on my iPod shuffle, a song I didn't remember I had on the library (not something I physically had; must have been one of the purevolume goods). A friend of mine gave me his Xbox years ago and the debut album was on it. However, I may have only ever heard it once and since it's been maybe 4 years, I can't remember anything about it.

Jay-Z and Kanye West - Watch the Throne [Deluxe Edition]
Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers (downloaded specifically so I could have a copy of "On My Level." Casually interested, otherwise. I streamed it when it came out and wasn't particularly impressed.) Waka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli (Noticed this nearby on my list of stuff to hear. Had always been curious as to why it universally got pretty decent reviews.)
Deerhunter - Cryptograms Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital (downloaded to quickly familiarize myself before their respective shows)
Taken from my buddy's iTunes: Handsome Furs - Plague Park Handsome Furs - Face Control (Above two should've been included near the top of my previous update) Beach House - Teen Dream Bright Eyes - The People's Key (to replace my existing copy, which I recall has an unnecessarily high bit rate) Jónsi - Go The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter IV [Deluxe Edition] (download)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - I'm with You
Native American Flute Lullabies (downloaded from Amazon for free. The combination of those words sounded amazing.)

September: Moby - Ambient (For as much as I love the "Ambient" disc of his Hotel album and still use it regularly as calming background music, this album was a little too uptempo for my liking.)
Staind - s/t (As Korn proved last year, you just can't go home again. Not much lasting value in this album for me in 2011.) The Devil Wears Prada - Dead Throne
Art Blakey Quintet - A Night at Birdland, Vols. 1 & 2
American Nightmare - Background Music (One of Alternative Press's 10 "Class of 2001" albums, and the only band/album I'd never heard of before. Vaguely familiar with the band's name after they changed it to Give Up the Ghost. Vaguely familiar with their frontman because he went on to play in Some Girls and currently fronts Cold Cave.)
blink-182 - Neighborhoods (CD)
Death Cab for Cutie - Something About Airplanes Death Cab for Cutie - We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes Death Cab for Cutie - The Photo Album (May very well never listen to these first three in full, but might as well hang onto them because you never know.) Death Cab for Cutie - Plans Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See
