Well my alternative station is gone as well, again . When I woke up Tuesday, the station was in stunt mode. I knew the final result more than likely wasn't going to be good. So the flip was completed on Thursday, and the new format was: another CHR . Just what the world f***ing needed. Now I'm stuck with that 89x, which has "Hear Me Now" as its #1 song now, and My Darkest Days' "Every Lie", "Riptide", and "Issues" inexplicably in its top ten. . Plus I'll have to get online to listen to Out of Order now, too. This blows! Corporate radio is such bulls***.

You can see it for yourself if you go to modify your profile and under account preferences, select skin "April Fools 2011".
Just a simple, Clue-themed layout and censored words list. As usual, the ones who disliked it spoke less articulately than those who got it.

So this "Pulse Clue Board" is a legit gag this time, right? Like the "ProBoards is changing it's [sic] name to HappyBoards." announcement at the top of the screen?

The new 92.3, alas, was too good to last. It's Chinese pop now. What we'd been hearing on air was www.savealternative.com. Apparently they stepped in and asked to broadcast while Principle got their act together. Still, at least we got them for two weeks. They're still broadcasting online and on 104.9 HD-2. Oh yeah, and we started a petition to get them back on the air. (This was partially in response to the idiotic "Save Channel 92.3" petition that popped up after SaveAlternative took over.) We almost have as many signatures as the Save Channel petition now! LOL!: www.change.org/petitions/save-savealternative-on-923#?opt_new=t&opt_fb=tIs Chinese Pop just as horrifying to listen to as J-pop and K-pop?

87. Snow Patrol - "Set Fire To The Third Bar"? (Not like I've heard the song, but if I'm right, wouldn't I deserve at least this for having watched a chick flick movie trailer? .) 81. Jay - Z & Swizz Beatz - "On To The Next One" (Feels cheap here too, but, oh well.)

My immediate thought was that they always seem to give the dance awards to the pop crossovers, many of which could only marginally be considered "dance" songs. But I didn't want to blurt out such an unresearched, gut feeling type of statement. Speaking of marginal qualifications, I hadn't seen the winners of the "minor" categories until I just looked at them a minute ago, but they gave Best Rock or Rap Gospel album to Switchfoot I understand their religious influence and all, but...Gospel? What the hell is that all about?

I didn't watch; I didn't even realize they were on, and I haven't cared in nearly ten years. But there is no combination of words and smilies that could come anywhere near representing how thrilled I was to hear about The Arcade Fire pulling rank for Album of the Year (while not even getting best Alternative album!). So I had to take a peek at the rest of the winners. "Bad Romance" and "Just The Way You Are" winning respective pop vocal performances over weak fields. . The pop collab going to Herbie Hancock in an upset over all those pop songs. . (Pulse is probably hootin' and hollerin' over this one too!) The Resistance getting best rock album over mostly legacy favorites of the committee. A little too much love for "Need You Now", although it's no surprise. There's always gonna be categories I don't agree with, but I can't say I'm too disappointed with much here, and as I was saying, there were some world-class highlights this year.

I look at Pulse's YOP section and like 4 topics are based on Lady Gaga/"Born This Way." No offense, but you can't just condense that into one topic. Then again, I bet it'll have about that many threads made in the Pop forum, with tons of posts about any remote chart updates. The "Born This Way" thread in the pop forum is on page 96 as I type this. It also bears mentioning that the song's world premier being at 4 AM EST wasn't enough to stop the thread from getting 10 new pages of replies within the next hour. I see the topic for "Hold it against me" has made it all the way to page 260 without crashing the board. I also wonder how big a deal Lady Gaga would be to Pulse in a world where the whole "Lady Gaga is a tranny" hysteria never existed. Surely she'd still be popular and all, but that rumor alone probably buzzes the f*** out of Lady Gaga to those absent-minded kids on that CHR forum.

Steve, I've been trying to figure out how I should handle this, seeing as I won't be able to see this tour anywhere. I've been thinking of looking up their set for this tour on YouTube and piecing it together. In order to keep some element of surprise for me, though, do you think you could post the set list one song at a time, waiting for me to confirm that I've watched a video of each song before you name the next one? (E.g., Let's say the first song was "Nightmare." I would then look up a performance of it from this tour, tell you when I've seen it, and then you'd post whatever song they played second, and so forth.) I can handle that. The first song was indeed "Nightmare". This one is from the vantage point of one seat to the left of me:

How the hell could they not play "Almost Easy", and to a lesser extent, "Seize The Day", "Beast and the Harlot", and "Scream" on a 70 minute, 12-song headlining set. They aren't at a point in their career where they can be pulling that s***. That aside though, this will be hard to top for concert of the year '11. They sounded great, had plenty of rad imagery, and propane burning everywhere. "So Far Away" was dedicated to Jimmy, which made my eyes water. Plus the weather and traffic during the trip up there kept us driving long enough to completely avoid watching Hollywood Undead, so that worked out perfectly in our favor. [/spoiler]

Not really a lot to talk about this week. Jimmy's edge over the field is wider than it may appear.
I have way too many fading songs in the teens and twenties.
Love The Naked and Famous track and its menacing bassline. I have gotten into both A Silent Film's singles and there was an actual coin toss to decide which one ended up higher, because I just couldn't decide on my own. I've only heard "Driven" on the radio (Alt Nation, of course), but not like I'm likely to continue hearing it very often without my own help. They're like what Shiny Toy Guns would be if they never had its girl singing.
Last week's 'debuts' really fizzled out this week, except "Welcome to the Family". The A7X show is tonight; we shall see how that sets the table for next week.

Yeah, I'm not as organized as I once was (which was not very much to begin with). This is pen, paper, and notepad right now. The mistake was that "The Ghost Inside" wasn't on the chart six weeks ago and I didn't realize it. I don't know why it wasn't.
Wouldn't have had any idea I'd been so obsessed with a "triple-A juggernaut" if not for it always being a part of your 'fave five' on the Pulse, since you like triple-A and all, and it had to have come from somewhere. It never came to mind until now, actually.

"Out of the Blue" is just too damn catchy to deny. I have no idea how old the song is, but it's not important. I figure, from being on Ethan's chart, anywhere from 0-5 years old. I expanded back to the usual 46 tracks because I can. LOL. It had actually been out for only a couple months when I debuted it, but you also have to keep in mind that I debuted it in December 2009. But better late than never. Here's to hoping it'll do just as well on your 2011 chart as it did on my 2010 (which'll be out in the form of audio countdown hopefully some time in the first quarter of this year). Yeah, that sounds about right. Hey, not like everything else on my list is spring chicken . Although I am into newer music as much right now as I have been anytime in the past four years, which has played a large part in me making charts again. I thought I was set upon my ways, but maybe not.

Doing this once a month is so much harder than doing it once a week.
Clearly Jimmy Eat World is putting on a show. I've worked my excitement level up to a new high with "Ready To Start", even though I only get to hear it on my own anymore. I keep finding more to like about "Sick of You".
Drove past a Broken Bells concert during a family gathering in Columbus last month. My sister and I both agreed that was where we'd be if we weren't 'stuck' at this gathering (well, I wouldn't drive to Columbus for them just yet, but I was there already). My dad and uncle were dumbfounded that so many people were standing out in the first real snow of the season wearing...what they wear, just to see Broken Bells. Their songs are standing on their own legs, too.
"MoneyGrabber" will obviously be a big deal. "Sing"...hey, I still prefer "Na Na Na", but the spotlight is firmly placed upon "Sing" right now, and I can't help it. Similar to how Coldplay had "Viva la Vida" released way too soon to eclipse "Violet Hill" which I also preferred. I love "The Cave" now and M&S is starting to feel like no fluke.
"Sail", with an Out of Order spin and several Alt Nation spins over a four hour time span, is a big mover. Way late for me on "Welcome to the Family", but I heard it several times while in Fort Myers, Florida before Christmas. Had no control over the radio but what we listened to in the car was so mind bogglingly active rock I could not believe my eyes when I got home and found it was actually an Alternative station I was listening to for four days. The only Alternative aspect of this station was that they played "Sick of You" once in four days. I developed a whole new thankfulness for radio around here, where I know I won't have to hear the wrong "Diamond Eyes" every hour, and my biggest issue is that they still run the 'recommended new music' sweeper for "Say You'll Haunt Me", and that they're still not on "Welcome to the Family" yet.
Not getting any radio help on "Machine Gun Blues" yet other than Out of Order play, just like "Dog Days". Boy is the ball being dropped on that Anberlin. I guess the label wasn't prepared for the first song to only spend 40 weeks on the chart instead of 80. Whatever. The followup will be what I say it'll be until they stop bumbling around.
"Louder Than Ever" is another Alt Nation staple. I don't have Sirius, but a company vehicle I get to drive does, so I listen to that whenever I get the chance. "Born Free" has been inexplicably in medium rotation ever since the summer here on 100.7. You'd never know around here that it couldn't even hit the Alternative chart, but the song's decent enough. "Out of the Blue" is just too damn catchy to deny. I have no idea how old the song is, but it's not important. I figure, from being on Ethan's chart, anywhere from 0-5 years old. I expanded back to the usual 46 tracks because I can.
Well, my character limit's probably almost up. Hope you all enjoyed!

"Fader" is moved from #14, its peak position, to recurrent now? But they keep "Porn Star Dancing" hanging around? What's next, they move "Coffee and Cigarettes" to recurrent now too? This is preposterous. .

Nick, even if I have to read January's charts in April, I hope they continue as well. I like that Fitz & the Tantrums track a lot. Coincidentally, it was the last song I heard in 2010; 100.7 here gave it a surprising add. Been meaning to check on that Lostprophets record for a while now, knowing that that radio wouldn't help and neither would domestic record stores ( ! ). You wouldn't be the first one here who (probably) would think it would behoove me to hear The National's record. I do enjoy the Invented album as much as everyone else here. Matt, I heard "Black & Yellow" and "All I Do Is Win" at some neighborhood bar that I definitely won't be frequenting in the future. Those songs weren't the reason for that, though (they weren't bad at all). Wouldn't have even recognized them if not for their appearance on your chart. Also heard that new Enrique Iglesias track, which was part of the reason for that, and then I go see it debut on your next chart. . And to answer last week's question: I'm feelin' the audio countdown this time. They last forever and they're great for plane trips and drives across country where it's just me and the iPod.

Top songs of 2010 on Mediabase: 1. "Uprising" (#22 in 2009) 2. "Savior" (#19 in 2009) 3. "1901" "Panic Switch" was still #12. (#5 in 2009. "The Royal We" only at #28). "Use Somebody" still appears at #19. (This being #3 in 2009, kind of inexcusable.) I'm frankly surprised to see "The Fixer" carry over into 2010. I guess I didn't hear it a whole lot into 2010, so I wasn't expecting to see it. Really, these are all examples of how stagnant the selections in 2010 really are, and probably why there were only 50 songs on the Mediabase charts this time. When I look at the 2009 year-end chart, things looked way prettier on that one by comparison to this year. Ooh, where's this? (Allaccess' year-to-date report has The Dirty Heads at #1 with a slight margin over "Savior".)

Jimmy Eat World - "My Best Theory"
"My Best Theory", "Undisclosed Desires", and "Nightmare" would have accounted for just about the entire summer and fall's allotment of #1's this year.
As often as I was able to hear "Neighborhood #3", "Black Mirror", and "Keep The Car Running" on the radio, it's so disappointing how infrequently I heard "Ready To Start", being their breakthrough hit and all.
I could make a long list of songs that fit the category "Obviously not tired of _____, yet". A lot of those became late bloomers. Especially: "Take A Load Off", "You Got Me", both AIC tracks, "The Sound", and "The High Road".
Then there's "Ride to California", basically on a second wind, partially influenced by how s***ty of a job I've done following up on singles that I enjoy. I still haven't even heard "Trinity" or "Get Higher"...I think there may have even been another one too. Same with Civil Twilight. Haven't heard any of "Letters"' followups.
Both of Linkin Park's latest singles were very quick to burn out. Still trying to decide how much I like "Dog Days". It's just not as good as "Kiss With A Fist" (even though that one got old quickly enough) and it's really only working out on the radio due to its clappability. I've yet to hear it anywhere on the radio besides Out of Order. "40 Day Dream", a one time Out of Order bonus track, isn't as infectious as "Home", but I liked it well enough to seek it out for myself. "Take Me (as you found me)" has been on the radar ever since preparing for the Anberlin show a few months back.
