The opening act was Peeping Tom and they (well, him, it's a one-man band apparently), were really good and energetic. Yes, none other than legendary Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton, who also has been involved with Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, and Loveage, and fronted an EP for the Dillinger Escape Plan when they were between vocalists. He also contributed vocals to Bjork's most recent album.

After doing some research, apparently some of the songs he performed were part of the project Lovage, which he did with Dan the Automator. I'll have to check that out too.
The Peeping Tom project is pretty interesting, I definitely need to pick that up. It's a got a really unique sound and interesting collaborations, even one with Norah Jones and I was surprised to hear her cursing.
During their set at the show, Rahzel (of the Roots) was one of the background vocalist and he was beatboxing. During the intermission, he beatboxed Busta Rhymes' "Touch It" while singing the chorus at the same time. I couldn't get over how amazingly awesome that was.

I put the Mute Math/The Whigs/Jonezetta show in Birmingham on my Google Calendar (October 26th)... that's the first step. In the meantime, I might go to BayFest on October 7th. Artists appearing are Phar Fletcher, Top of the Orange, Evans Blue, Hinder, 10 Years, and Shinedown; I'd be looking forward to the final two acts the most.

Through one of my new jobs, I happened to see Queensryche a couple weeks back. Last week I got to 3/4 pay attention to the Muse show that took place (I could only really see Matt Bellamy from where I was, though However, by sheer accident, I did catch up with a close high school friend I hadn't seen in 3-4 years or talked to, in like, I dunno, two, so that was real cool. This coming week, I'll be working the Dragonforce /All That Remains/Horse the Band show, then KT Tunstall, then later Brian Regan, then Sufjan Stevens. Save All That Remains, I couldn't care less about any of those.

Yeah, dude! And an FYE startup offered me a job, too. So I'm golden. (And that explains why I haven't been around much anywhere; I finally get my own computer up and running this weekend at the earliest.) This past week was Jamie Cullum and wow, I'd totally been sleeping on him, assuming I already knew what he was all about. And while I can't say for sure how much I'd enjoy just listening to his records, he is one hell of an amazing showman. On a side note, I was filling in for someone in the record store up the street from the venue that day, and Jamie came in the store and looked around for a while. I was the one who took his bag at the counter when he came in. It was only after he had left that my boss (who got there after Jamie was already inside) told me it was Jamie. If only I'd known what I was in for later that evening. First off, I would've recognized him (I certainly wasn't expecting him), and secondly, I would've been excited to see him. Damn. Then there was the "Real Men of Comedy" tour featuring a couple guys whose names I don't remember, Charlie Murphy, and Joe Rogan, who I'd never heard of either, but apparently co-hosts Fear Factor. God, that was an awful show. So was Mo'nique Saturday night. And to top her off, she had two(!) sets. Ugh. But Alice Cooper was last night and that was real cool. If I'd been born 10-15 years earlier, I'd have been a big fan of his by now. This week there's Cyndi Lauper , DJ Shadow , and Lisa Lampanelli

Everclear is coming to my university on October 20th. $10 student tickets? Not bad. Bought my ticket. I won a free three-day pass as the prize in an (easy) '80s music trivia contest at my school, so I'll be going to this too. I'm going to try and make a huge "I [heart] OK Go" posterboard sign and hold it up during Hinder's set. I'm also planning on going to see Lostprophets with Eighteen Visions in Baton Rouge on the 9th of October, and might head over to New Orleans to see Anberlin on the 30th. This month is gonna be sweet.

I'm going to try and make a huge "I [heart] OK Go" posterboard sign and hold it up during Hinder's set. Oh, that'll be so gnarly! Yeah, I made the sign and everything, but the plans sort of fell apart. For one, the friend I was with said the reason she came to the show was for Hinder; and for two, we met up with some other people a little later and just hung out way in the back in lawn chairs. The lone song from Hinder that I liked was -- you guessed it -- a cover, of "Take Me Home Tonight" by Eddie Money. 10 Years had a decent, but short, set (or at least it seemed like it, since many of their songs I didn't recognize. They also didn't play "Through the Iris"); Shinedown were the final act, but we left early and didn't watch them. Now, Lostprophets and Eighteen Visions last night was much better. The opening band was Boys Like Girls, who were kinda emo/poppy-punk. They were OK but not great. I know 4 songs from Eighteen Visions ("I Let Go", "Tower of Snakes", "Tonightless" and "Victim") and they played 2 ("Victim" and "Tower of Snakes" closed out the show; they also played "Waiting For the Heavens", a song whose name I recognized, but I didn't know the song itself). The three girls I was with all seemed to get a kick out of the lead singer's movements and such. I'll try to piece together the Lostprophets set (the songs with asterisks, I'm sure of their order): * Everyday Combat * To Hell We Ride * The New Transmission * Start Something A Town Called Hypocrisy Last Summer We Still Kill the Old Way Can't Catch Tomorrow (Good Shoes Won't Save You This Time) Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja * Happy Birthday (They broke at this point to wish their merch guy a happy birthday, and asked everyone in the crowd to jump up and down when they started their next song. Ian said he didn't care if it took until 4 AM for everyone to get it right, at which point they played the opening to "4:AM Forever" while he continued to talk.) * Last Train Home * Burn, Burn No encore. Half the crowd was chanting either "Encore!" or "'Rooftops'!", but it wasn't to be.

I'm going up to Detroit on Sunday to try and sneak a peek at the first World Series game of my lifetime through the gates, and if the game ends early enough I'll go across the street for round 11 of 30 Seconds To Mars. I should be OK because those guys always feel the need to totally overload on no-name opening bands and this $2 bill tour thing (that I had to pay $23 for because ticketmaster f***ed up and made the special presale tickets fair game to the public) they're doing now is no exception.

I ended up going to Hip Hop Toberfest organized by 91.5 The Beat two weeks ago in Kitchener, ON with a bunch of Canadian artists like K-Os, Snow and Jelleestone, tag on some random even smaller-name Canadian opening acts. It was alright, since there was alcohol involved as well as Ocktoberfest sausages and I got free tickets (I had connections ). Didn't really care too much for Jelleestone and K-Os (the latter didn't even play most of the songs he's known for), but I liked Snow and he was freestyling. The crowd made it the whitest hip-hop concert ever.
Since I've last posted, I've also attended the Labour of Love Concert, a huge trance music concert in Toronto with such acts as Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Tommie Sunshine, Benny Benassi, etc. It was alright, but a little too crowded for my liking. It was hard to get around or even breathe.
However, I am going to the All-American Rejects concert on November 7 in Toronto, so that should be good.
A follow-up to my previous post about the Gnarls Barkley/Peeping Tom concert, here's a clip of Rahzel beat-boxing "Touch It." Sick.

I'm going up to Detroit on Sunday to try and sneak a peek at the first World Series game of my lifetime through the gates Lucky! [/Napoleon Dynamite] 11! Wow. Let's see...the shows of note since my last post I've worked: The Fray (they were fine)Ani DiFranco (unfortunately, fairly dull)Breaking Benjamin (w/ Evans Blue, Dropping Daylight) (beat me to death with mediocrity)Ian Anderson playing the orchestral Jethro Tull (this was pretty lame)Jim Gaffigan (I had no idea he was this funny.)The Dresden Dolls (This kicked ass.)Pet Shop Boys (I understand both men are gay, and I have no problem with that, but I was a little disappointed that the show was as flamboyant and over-the-top as it was. It just wasn't really for me.)Tonight was Kris Kristofferson (My attention span for his kind of music lasts half as long as he played. Plus, the two drunk chicks repeatedly declaring their love for him was just obnoxious. It's like, the man's up there with an acoustic and a harmonica. Just because he can hear you doesn't mean you should shout to him and ruin it for everyone else. Once is forgivable. 10 time isn't.)

I just saw the Lostprophets earlier tonight. Good stuff, as usual, albeit not long enough, as always. Approximate setlist: To Hell We Ride The New Transmission We Still Kill the Old Way Last Summer 4:AM Forever Rooftops Start Something Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja Can't Catch Tomorrow Last Train Home Everyday Combat Burn, Burn Oh yeah, afterward, their fill-in bassist (the real one--I don't know who's who other than Jamie and Ian--was home having a baby) hung out by the bus, followed by both guitarists. Their new drummer came out, but not to mingle right away. Ian came out after a little bit and because he had no idea where Jamie was, and because I don't remember who's who, Ian was the only one I bothered getting a picture with. (I got all their autographs four years ago.) I deliberately wore a specific, outlandishly western shirt I own because I had it on when I met them four years ago, and Ian asked if I wanted to sell it to him. I brought it up and he swore he remembered that. Anyway, I felt like I'm coming down with a cold when I woke up this morning, and had to go see the show by myself, because my friends who are into them don't live close by anymore. And even if I do get full blown sick tomorrow, I'm so glad I went and got to meet Ian again. (I didn't get to two years ago; you had to have bought Start Something at the show in order to meet them. Damn Columbia Records...)

And so I saw the All-American Rejects on Tuesday night at the Docks in Toronto along with opening acts Gym Class Heroes (which I missed and it was the only opening-act I was looking for,), The Format and the Starting Line.
Set list:
Dirty Little Secret Top Of The World Happy Endings Stab My Back Last Wishes Dance Inside Swing, Swing I'm Waiting Straitjacket Feeling Night Drive It Ends Tonight My Paper Heart The Last Song
Encore: Move Along (How predictable )
They were really good and Tyson was really funny. He called on a guy who was being an ass in the audience and giving them a finger. Tyson tried to make him to get on the stage but he was being chickens***. Tyson then said he must be from Quebec. Upon introducing "Happy Endings", he said "There's a lot of love in here and it's all about loving tonight. (Imitating Wyclef Jean) No fighting! This next song is about love... it's the love you get when you go to a massage parlour and shes asks you if you want a happy ending." At the end of the show, he yelled out "Who wants my shoes?" and threw them off the stage. He then came out to throw away a setlist (who wants that?), the drummer's drumsticks and his own towel. There were way too many kids though and moms who were supervising them.

VAST plays a part of SXSW, and free show at that! On March 16th. I'm so pumped. I'll probably be seeing more, as I'll probably be going along with a couple of my friends.
MCR/Muse is exactly a month later. Also, there's a RHCP show coming soon that I might not get to see and Tool re-scheduling their canceled show.

I have reason to believe that the MCR/Muse tour will be hijacked for this year's Pointfest, which I've already won tickets to see, despite not knowing any of the bands.
There's also a 1/60 (0.01667, 1.667%) chance that I'll get chosen to help announce the lineup on air and from the stage, get limo'ed to the show, meet all the bands, watch from my own suite, and get 105 lawn tickets to give out.
Let's see, shows of note since I last posted about 'em in here: Picking up where I left off in November, there was: Jonny Lang Story of the Year (w/ Anberlin, Greeley Estates, Monty Are I) My Morning Jacket Lyfe Jennings (w/ Shareefa) Death Cab for Cutie (w/ OK Go)
In December: I went and saw (+44) (w/ the Matches) Vicky and I saw Bleeding Through (w/ Drive By) (Technically opening for Senses Fail and Saosin, who we didn't stay for. It's not that I would've minded seeing them, I just didn't want them to ruin the Bleeding Through high.)
Back at work: Ray LaMontagne Imogen Heap (Dweezil) Zappa plays (Frank) Zappa Deftones (w/ Sparta) Jet (w/ Angels & Airwaves, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Autovein) The All-American Rejects (w/ Boys Like Girls)
January: Fall Out Boy (w/ New Found Glory, the Early November, Permanent Me) Gregg Allman went to see Red Hot Chili Peppers (w/ Gnarls Barkley) Hinder (w/ Finger Eleven, Black Stone Cherry) Big Head Todd & the Monsters
February: Lindsey Buckingham Bela Fleck & the Flecktones Bob Saget The Shins went to see AFI (w/ Sick of It All, the Dear and Departed) Guster was tonight. Pete Yorn is on Tuesday
I may be going to see Flogging Molly on Wednesday.

Well, as it turns out My Chemical Romance and Muse will be in Canada the day of the show, but I f***ing won all that today!!! Can you believe it?! Un-f***ing-believable! I know the lineup and am actually only looking forward to 2 of the bands. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple more, but those 2 bands are the only ones I own CDs of. (I'll post the lineup Monday, after the official announcement.) For a second, I thought about forfeiting and letting someone else win who'd appreciate it more. 'Cause I did some research after I was told the date and discovered MCR/Muse wouldn't be there. So I called back later and asked if I could be sent the lineup, just to make sure this would be worth my while. I was kinda on the fence, but then I thought: "I'll get to go inside the station and actually be on the air with my favorite DJ that morning." "My name will be on everyone's ticket that goes to the show." "I'll get to ride in a f***ing limousine for the first time." "I'll get to be on the main (and side) stage(s) announcing bands." "I'll get to meet ____ & ____ and get photos and autographs." "I'll get to watch a show from those rich/connected-people VIP boxes." "I get to give away lawn tickets to whomever I want." So I went ahead and accepted anyway. How often would I get the chance to do any of that stuff? Never! (If only this had been last year when Avenged Sevenfold & Eighteen Visions were there. Oh well.) I'm kind of suspicious that I may have been rigged as the winner, because I've called the morning DJ enough to where he recognizes my voice and apparently knows me by name now. But I may never know for sure. 'Cause what could they say if I asked that. I'd think "yes" would potentially get them in hot water.And...The guy asked me what I was doing Wednesday night. I'm on the schedule to work the sold-out 30 Seconds to Mars show, but get this: he asked if I could get out of it, because the station wants to present me as the contest winner that night in front of the whole audience. (And all my co-workers, as it happens! ) They want me to hang out with them and take in the show from their VIP box! ;D Do you think I have a very good chance of meeting 30 Seconds to Mars again, now? I'd say... ;D

I just saw Carbon Leaf and Flogging Molly at Shamrockfest in DC. Pretty good show, though it was weird to see people moshing and crowd surfing when Carbon Leaf played. As the lead singer said, this is probably the only show they play that people actually crowd surf at. Seems like the Carbon Leaf crowd would have been more mellow, but I guess that's what a day of drinking will do to you... and I'm guessing a lot of the Carbon Leaf moshers were Flogging Molly fans that just came up to the stage early to get a place. As for the actual Carbon Leaf show, it seemed like mostly Indian Summer and Echo Echo songs... not much Love Loss Hope Repeat in there, which is fine because I'm not that familiar with the CD yet. Finale was Mary Mac and predictably everyone went crazy. As an aside, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, famous for their hit "Do Right", was also playing. It ended up that one of my friend's friends is the brother of Jimmie's Chicken Shack lead singer Jimi Haha. It's weird because the guy actually came to a party of mine a month ago and I had no idea about his semi-famous brother till now. My new claim to fame is that I beat the brother of Jimi Haha in a game of Karaoke Revolution... LOL.

Be forewarned. The following reply to such an innocent question mutates into a MySpace-style blog entry about my life, unfit for posting on MySpace, due to the much greater possibility of people in my everyday world coming across it. If you just wanna skim this for the short answer (if that can even be pieced together quickly), that's cool. Basically, in writing this, I felt like I was coming across as a pathetic loser, so I felt insecure about that and do my best to justify myself. (One quick question though: with as late as you clearly stay up, based on your posts here, how are you even awake early enough to talk to the morning DJ? ) Good question. This won't be the most linear answer, but here we go: Since the station is called The Point, they used to do segments in the late '90's at about 10 AM called "What's the Point?" They'd play several songs (about 3-6, if I recall correctly). Whoever was first in guessing the theme that tied all the selections together won a small prize. At the end of January, the Point got rid of its syndicated morning show, replacing it with four hours of music, hosted by my favorite Point DJ from the late '90's, whom I often listened to during his evening time slot. He took a few years off from radio and came back at some point last fall, I think. Because they eventually gave him a daily programming block again, and a risky, morning time slot at that, I made sure to tune in to support the change. (I woke myself early to hear all 4 hours the first morning and it almost killed me to stay awake.) And it's not regular programming . At the top of each of the 4 hours, he does 5-song sets that revive the "What's the Point?" concept, only there's no prize to win because he says up front what the theme is. These are almost always bands or songs by popular bands that you wouldn't normally hear in 2007. Because it's rarer music hosted by him, I make sure to tune in at the top of every hour, let the songs play for 15-20 minutes, then try to sleep the next 40-ish until the next hour rolls around. Because my only days I can count on at the record stores so far this year are a Saturday shift at one and a Sunday shift at the other, this has freed my weekdays up to sleep into the afternoon because of the morning show. With the concert venue being only evenings, I usually don't have much to wake up and be showered for these days until the reruns of That '70's Show at 5pm. Obviously if I have errands to run I get up sooner. And when I get home from the club, usually in the midnight hour, I never want to go right to bed. So that's when I stay up and do my internetting. It's such a stupid little introverted life I have, aside from my 3 jobs, which I enjoy very much. Largely, I enjoy socializing with almost all of my co-workers, which is hardest to do at the club because there are a lot more employees. I put friends on the guest list for shows quite a bit, I hang out with some of them here and there, my brother and I visit each other once every week or two, and I have this huge crush on a girl from work. But as much as I've gotten to know her the past couple of weeks and we seem to enjoy each other's company, I can't for the life of me figure out if she's taken, whether by an outsider or by one of our co-workers, who quite possibly swooped in and snatched her up while my own relationship was going down in flames. And now I'm legitimately past the point of a rebound relationship, which is why it would burn me up if this other guy is already dating her. Because the more I talk to her, the more I fall for her. Seriously, if I'd known we'd get along as well as we do when she first started working there (it wasn't obvious by appearance), I would've gotten to know her a lot more quickly. Anyway, steering back on track here, after a month or so of regular "What's the Points," (including one submission of my own) they announced their annual festival plans were looming. Presumably to draw more listeners to the new morning show, listeners had to guess the themes every morning now for 3 weeks. Each caller had to be the first one through with the correct guess at the start of the fifth song. The winner would receive two free tickets to the festival and would automatically be entered to win the grand prize, which I ended up winning. 4 hours times 5 days times 3 weeks equals 60 winners. I did my best (out of curiosity) to hear what each theme was. Sometimes I fell asleep in the middle and slept through others. I guess in calling the DJ up to ask him what I missed from time to time (not always), and by him using a theme submission of mine, and from winning my 2 free tickets fairly early on (I only bothered to try winning on the themes that weren't sledgehammer obvious; there were actually several I had no clue on), he learned my name and eventually could recognize my voice. Anyway, here are the 5 songs I correctly guessed the theme for: Beastie Boys "Slow and Low" Red Hot Chili Peppers "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" Johnny Cash "Rusty Cage" Run-DMC "It's Tricky" System of a Down "Spiders" If you know it, PM me. Oh yeah, thanks for reading, by the way. And goodnight.
