Be forewarned. The following reply to such an innocent question mutates into a MySpace-style blog entry about my life, unfit for posting on MySpace, due to the much greater possibility of people in my everyday world coming across it. If you just wanna skim this for the short answer (if that can even be pieced together quickly), that's cool. Basically, in writing this, I felt like I was coming across as a pathetic loser, so I felt insecure about that and do my best to justify myself. No need to worry... that's what LiveJournal is for. I've seen (and written) worse. (Then again, after signing up for MySpace, you're probably not in the market for more time-consuming Internet sites.) Anyway, here are the 5 songs I correctly guessed the theme for: Beastie Boys "Slow and Low" Red Hot Chili Peppers "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" Johnny Cash "Rusty Cage" Run-DMC "It's Tricky" System of a Down "Spiders" No idea, seeing as how I've heard (at most) 3 of those songs.

No idea, seeing as how I've heard (at most) 3 of those songs. Ohhhhh...you don't even have to have heard any of them, actually. That was such a blast this morning. Get a load of the website: 1057thepoint.com/index.aspx1057thepoint.com/Features/pointfest-details.aspxI'll actually be going back this afternoon to sit in for a portion of the 2-6 programming. Tomorrow I should have the audio content of my segments and the promo spot they piece together for the show out of what I recorded for them. Hopefully the ad will turn out good; they just accepted my first takes on the lines, but I would have been totally willing to record alternate intonations for any of it. The video they're going to make will actually compile the footage from today along with anything else they may take before May 12, as well as footage of me all day at the show. It'll all be edited together in a sleek-looking final short film, I was told. I'll see what I can do about hooking you guys up with that stuff as I get it.

Okay, now streaming video is up of my morning there. I was shocked to see that the intro includes an extreme contrast version of my MySpace profile pic! They looked me up on MySpace and just stole it. Not that I care, but I can't believe they actually did that. The afternoon segment was kind of a letdown. The 2 jocks didn't really seem to take any interest in the fact that I was the grand prize winner attached to their first huge concert of the year. (Sometimes only huge concert of the year.) And the ad was already running that afternoon before I even went back. And to my surprise/relief, it sounded just fine.

I presented 30 Seconds to Mars from the stage tonight. Then, I took my Point hoodie back off and got back to work. Unfortunately, 30STM weren't aware of me until after the show, when I got off the clock and they were still around to tell. I was hoping they'd be in the wings waiting as the 2 DJs and I were out there, but they were still in the dressing room, not to hit the stage for another 5 minutes or so. Ah well...Oh yeah, some Point contest winner got to play guitar on stage with the guys during "From Yesterday." I high-fived him when I saw him later.
Tonight I got a CD of my segments on the air (all of the second one; almost all of the first and primary one. Careless editing, perhaps?), plus my commercial. I got a DVD of the streaming video on the website, too. If anybody wants copies of either of these, speak up, so I'll know how many to run off this weekend. (I would just make files and send them electronically, but my airtime segments run 23 minutes total, so it's useless trying to chop that up.)
Anyway, I was thinking at least Kirk would PM the theme I correctly guessed to become eligible to win all this, but I haven't heard from anyone. In that case, I'll just go ahead and say that the theme I won on was songs produced by Rick Rubin.

And by Saturday, I meant Friday. The show was pretty good except for the fact that there was 1 guy for every 5 girls in the audience with most of them being obnoxious teenage girls that are still in high school. OK Go and Mae opened for them and they were alright. The best part of the show was when the drummer of The Fray stepped up to the mic to do a song and all of a sudden they broke out into a cover of "Hips Don't Lie." I almost died there.

I saw Tool tonight... first time in support of 10,000 Days finally.
Setlist: Jambi Stinkfist (w/ long-standard extension right before "I'll keep digging.") The Pot Forty Six & 2 Schism (w/ double-time midsection riff plus a drum solo before continuing the middle part as normal) Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) Rosetta Stoned Right in Two Wings for Marie 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. II) Lateralus (w/ 2 members of Melt Banana joining on guitar and hand-drum in the middle before continuing the middle as usual)
Encore: Vicarious
I might as well call it now as the best concert I'll see all year. Of the 5 times I've seen them, this would likely be anywhere from 3rd to 5th. It was hands-down the furthest away from them I've ever had to be. From where we were in the arena, Adam's guitar sounded like crap. Not his fault, because the place wasn't built for music, but the guitar was way too loud comparatively anyway and Maynard's vocals were way too low in the mix. The guitar from where we were was too trebly and raspy. It sounded like it was being played through a torn speaker a lot of the time. Again, it's the venue's natural fault, not Adam's or the sound guy's. Still, only 2 songs each from Ænima and Lateralus, with nothing from Undertow? (Opiate being overlooked I can understand.) Not even "Ænema," which is a staple.
It was funny, right as they were about to start "Vicarious," apparently somebody threw their demo onstage. Maynard says, "Hold on a second, Justin! I just got a hold of someone's demo up here. I'm gonna take 10 minutes and go listen to someone's f***ing demo....*silence*....Nevermind."

A Tool show without "Ænema". What the crap. Well they closed with that song in both of their Detroit area shows last year, meaning, Maynard's praying for rain. There proceeded to be the biggest rainstorm I've ever experienced after the first show. I wasn't there (that was the theater show that sold out in about 15 seconds), but I probably wouldn't have made it home that night if I had. It also rained heavily enough after the 2nd show (which I attended) for somebody to get in a wreck with a cop car and make a parking lot out of I-75.
Looks like the only setlist changes they've made is to replace "Ænema" with "Right In Two" and slide "Jambi" up to the opening slot. I didn't get any of Undertow or Opiate either.
My next show (on the schedule) will be Muse and Social D (with B.R.M.C. and Cold War Kids) on August 2nd, for 89x's birthday show.

I'm officially in for what surely is the biggest lineup of bands I'll have ever been to. For $120 (including all taxes and fees), I'll be seeing Mute Math, Fall Out Boy, Coheed and Cambria, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Gym Class Heroes, Motion City Soundtrack, Marc Broussard, Plain White T's, The Black Crowes, Common, M.I.A., Wilco, Ben Harper, and Spoon. ...Oh yeah, AND the reunited Rage Against the Machine, AND the reunited Smashing Pumpkins.

I would've gone to Warped Tour yesterday, but I had to go to work and need to get a budget going, so I bypassed that one. It's not like I felt I MUST see any of those acts anyway, even if quite a few piqued my interest.
One show I am sure that I'll go to is Brand New/Thrice/mewithoutYou on Nov. 15.

Speaking of American Idol, I tried my best to avoid the Taylor Hicks show that was going on at my place of business the other night... I've never seen so many overweight middle-aged white women collected in one place before... And maybe if he hadn't been charging $45 ( ) for tickets, he would've had a better turnout than 700-ish.

I just got back from the Incubus show in Toronto and it was f***ing amazing. The Bravery opened for them even though Simon Dawes was scheduled to open instead. Anyways, it was great. Brandon was all over the place playing different instruments and there were many solo's in the middle of songs. They played mostly songs from their new album as well as "Wish You Were Here", "Drive", "Pistola", "Echo", "A Certain Shade Of Green" and "Megalomaniac". It was weird how Brandon barely talked though. Other than "thank you's" and "how's everyone doing", he only spoke once throughout the entire show. The best part was the encore when they played "Are You In?" and Mike brought in the pipa to play "Aqueous Transmission." The latter was amazing.
Of course, I decided to buy myself a $40 shirt there. I think that might've been the best concert I've been to.

Of course, I decided to buy myself a $40 shirt there. I think that might've been the best concert I've been to. $40 for a goddamn Incubus t-shirt? I mean, I understand that huge venues take a cut of merch so the prices for everybody are all jacked, but that beats out even Tool t-shirts at $38. The most I've ever paid for a t-shirt is a $28 Orgy t-shirt 7 years ago. If a band, wherever they're playing, wants more than $25, they can go f*** themselves. I'll just buy one at Hot Topic instead.

Well, $30 seems to be the standard around here. I've bought Gnarls Barkley and Kanye t-shirts for that price when they were here. The weird thing is, the venue I went to yesterday wasn't even that big. Kanye played at a much bigger venue. You would think that with the US-Canadian exchange rate being almost equal that those prices would be lower.
Oh well, whatever. It's hard to get band t-shirts that aren't generic looking around here anyway.

I ended up dragging along Radical347 to the Incubus concert of which The Bravery opened for them. The show was once again great. They changed their set list a bit which was a pleasant surprise, but they ended up only playing 5 songs from Light Grenades. The venue was terrible though, it took forever to get in and get out. This weekend, Street Scene is happening (at the same venue : . I'm going to catch the show tomorrow with such acts as The Killers, Social Distortion, Arctic Monkeys, Air, Infected Mushroom, Brand New, Gym Class Heroes, Mute Math, Too $hort and the one I'm most looking forward to... Wow, that sounds rad, for most part.
So I've bought my ticket for that Brand New show in November already and even brought along an extra one in case someone wanted to come along.
I didn't know that the Flaming Lips could sell out a venue like the one that they did in San Antonio (same one I'm going to for upcoming concert) and never realized they were still that big. They would be coming on Wednesday.
I feel that with a new VAST album out soon, there must be a tour coming around some time soon, just as well.

Unfortunately, I'd be seeing the Flaming Lips for the first time (for free) on Friday if I wasn't going to a wedding. I mean I'm happy about the wedding and all, but who gets married on a Friday?? Why couldn't it have been this past Friday when Edwin McCain was playing? I wouldn't have minded missing that one at all.

This past weekend, my roommates and I went to LA to catch the annual Nocturnal Festival, a huge electronic music festival this year featuring the stylings of Benny Benassi, Carl Cox, The Chemical Brothers and Paul van Dyk. It was held outdoors in the middle of downtown, right by Staples Center. It was pretty sick and there were lots of stoners, obviously. Good times.
Paul van Dyk had like 6 vocalists performing live during his set, I thought that was pretty cool.

I went to the Thrice/Brand New show on Thursday. Had a lot of fun going there and even re-acquainted with a friend I hadn't seen in a couple of years. The venue it was at was pretty cool, too. mewithoutYou opened and were pretty decent even though I wasn't familiar with any of the songs (and I don't remember hearing "Yellow Spider" which I actually DID know & ruled). Thrice's set was pretty well-balanced from The Illusion of Safety onwards. I like the first album but can see why nothing was done from there. What I remember from the setlist: 01. Firebreather 02. Stare at the Sun 03. Kill Me Quickly 04. Digital Sea 05. Silhouette 06. The Flags of Dawn 07. The Messenger 08. The Whaler 09. Atlantic 10. Burn the Fleet 11. Don't Tell and We Won't Ask 12. The Artist in the Ambulance 13. Deadbolt 14. The Earth Will Shake Pretty good for them apparently not being a headlining act. It was also Eddie (the bassist)'s birthday during then. Not totally sure about the order but I do know "The Messenger" and "The Whaler" were played back to back and that the first four and last two are in the right order. I remember after the set one guy was talking about there being a jackass who called out for "Deadbolt" and said the song was already played, but I think the guy had confused it for "KMQ" which was from the same album. I would have caught on if it really were already played in the set. I didn't recognize how loyal Brand New's fan base was; I guess sometimes bands do matter from the Pulse pages. That being said it leaned more toward The Devil and God which was fine with me. There was also a cover of "Undone - the Sweater Song" and they still performed "Sic Transit Gloria" and "Okay, I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't," although I've always found the latter track to be boring. I would have stayed for like half of the set initially but I didn't recognize how much in my favor it had worked. I wish "Welcome to Bangkok" were as good as it were when it was performed as the encore that night. VAST is coming to San Antonio on January 18. Possibly my first show of next year and I'm sure that I'll enjoy it.

I can't believe the thread had died after such big activity earlier on. With all the time I have to dedicate to work, my girl, my friends, or any of the miscellaneous things I have to do, it's just not worth it anymore to spend 2-5 hours driving to see a band that has two songs that I like. Especially now with gas being over $3 and rising like it is. I'm stripped down to just the absolute top shelf of bands I'd like to see, and it seems like all of them are in between albums and not touring right now. Although I finally got my tickets to Taste of Chaos with A7X, Atreyu, and Bullet for my Valentine (along with a bunch of crazy Japanese rock bands that would certainly be more interesting to watch than the random MySpace bands I had to sit through two years ago).

Since my last post here, I attended the second day of Street Scene '07 in San Diego because I was too cheap to go to both, which was pretty good but T.I.'s set was way too short, it was only 30 minutes long. I guess I shouldn't expect too much from him considering it was mostly a rock music festival. It was kinda annoying how a lot of the acts I wanted to see performed at the same time. I ended up only seeing T.I., Too $hort, Gym Class Heroes, Air and The Killers.
I also saw M.I.A. live at Canes Bar & Grill in SD, which is a really small venue. Opening for her were The Cool Kids, which weren't that great. They kept claiming that they're the black Beastie Boys, which doesn't make sense, because the reason the Beastie Boys are the Beastie Boys is because they're white. But anyhow, M.I.A. was amazing! She was so full of energy and was stage-diving every 10 seconds while performing. She also had a hypewoman with her and a DJ who was also really good. She definitely knows how to put on a great show.

You do a better job of making it sound like M.I.A. is interesting than oscillations. does. On another note, within an hour of my last post about all the bands that I want to see not touring, MCR announces a date at a cozy little venue in Detroit in April. .

Oh and of course I found out Kanye West/Lupe Fiasco/N*E*R*D/Rihanna will be hitting Toronto on 5/21, Alicia Keys/Jordin Sparks on 6/6.
Btw, what's with your recently listened list? Fergie "Clumsy", Taylor Swift, Lupe, Pink, Rihanna/Ne-Yo, Kanye, Soulja Boy, Fergie "Big Girls Don't Cry", The Last Goodnight. Are you on crack? And can I have some?
