If the Watch the Throne tour ever touched down in St. Louis, I'd be there in a heartbeat. I may consider going to Chicago. 37. Niggas In Paris 38. Niggas In Paris Encore: 39. Niggas in Paris 40. Niggas In Paris 41. Niggas In Paris I'd read they do "Niggas in Paris" at least a couple times per show, but I didn't realize it was back-to-back and five times at the end, including all of the encore. I just gave my final album-ranking listen to Watch the Throne tonight, actually. Half of the album is merely OK to decent, while the better half of it is phenomenal and pulls it up to 4 stars, overall. And "Niggas in Paris" becoming a single really helped sell me on that song. I had it ranked about halfway down, initially. 01. Illest Motherf ucker Alive (Can't believe this and "H.A.M" aren't included on the standard version. :02. New Day 03. Niggas in Paris 04. H.A.M 05. Lift Off 06. No Church in the Wild 07. Otis 08. Who Gon Stop Me 09. Gotta Have It 10. Welcome to the Jungle 11. Primetime 12. Made in America 13. Murder to Excellence 14. Why I Love You (Why this was flagged as a future single, I'll never know)15. That's My Bitch 16. The Joy

To be honest, I mostly went to the concert solely because of Kanye. He has always put on a good show and there was no way I was going to miss that. The ticket prices were steep. I got the second cheapest tier which was in Section 320 and it was still $133! The cheaper $75 tier were behind the stage and there was no point on going for that. I guess the plus side with that is that everyone who attended the concert must like them a lot to spend that kind of money. I read that the other show they had in Toronto on the night before (of which the really pregnant Beyoncé was in attendance), they "only" played "Niggas In Paris" 3 times followed by the appropriate "Encore", I felt a little let down that I didn't get to see that, lol. After the show was over on my night, they just set off the fireworks, which I assume was for "Encore." I wasn't really into the album initially, because it's nowhere near as hook-heavy as Kanye's previous albums, but after going to the concert, I definitely gotten a renewed interest in it and appreciate on how good some of the songs are. I'll have to do a ranking thing once I become more familiar with the album.

The performance of "Lateralus" was the most amazing audio/visual experience I've ever witnessed.
I seem to remember reading an article about ten years ago where Maynard claimed "Ticks & Leeches" would never be performed live, due to all the screaming. So with that in the back of my mind, seeing that was pretty neat.
Considering that exactly one city in all of Middle America got to host a Tool show this time around, and they chose my hometown for it, I can't bring myself to complain about anything that took place here. But, I see they broke out "Parabol/Parabola" for one of their Dallas shows, and for that, I am extremely jealous.
Is it just me or are concert ticket prices going through the roof lately? There are more shows I'm interested in so far this year than the past few years combined, but it'd cost me an arm and a leg to get into all of them. I can't get into the building for Foster the People for under $50, or MUTEMATH for under $40, and the Coldplay tickets I'm trying for tomorrow morning would be the most expensive ticket I've ever purchased at $91.25 out the door, and that's not even for floor.
In a way it makes sense, but it also doesn't, since I'd heard so many reports about how badly Ticketmaster's been struggling recently amid paltry ticket sales. Maybe the economy really is turning around.

It's been appalling, and it's been that way for about a year. I got a good price to see Thrice, but a band like FtP would easily sell out with low ticket prices, which was what was happening about all of last year.
I actually saw the Mute Math show in my city for cheaper than that; Austin wasn't too bad either, but I opted to just stay in the city while that was going on.
I might go see the Lemonheads next Sunday.

Maybe the economy really is turning around. I'm seeing The Joy Formidable in March and paid only $16 for my ticket (plus fees, but even those only brought it up to $20.40), so there are still a few inexpensive shows here and there. I agree with your post overall though. Mute Math and Foster the People are a bit less where I am (with fees, mid 30s and mid 40s respectively), but still more than I was hoping. I'm leaning toward getting tickers for both anyway though, because I still haven't gotten to see either one before. Also seeing Fountains of Wayne in April. Total came to $35.19, which surprised me, because even though they definitely have a solid group of devoted fans, those are pretty much the only people who would go see them in 2012.

The $91.25 for Coldplay wasn't even for lower bowl, much less floor. But, everything's worth what its purchaser will pay for it, and I bought 'em anyway. And if I'd waited a couple hours, I would have been shut out, so I'm not alone.
It's got me thinking, we've got these politicians pushing so hard for all this legislature to prevent piracy--what happens if they're successful enough to shut down a significant portion of it. How else are the MUTEMATH's of the world going to make things work? I can't think of a more 'word of mouth' dependent act in the world today than MUTEMATH, since they don't really have any hit singles or record sales, but can put forth a $40 show anyway. But is 'word of mouth' going to still work if it isn't free? I doubt it, and therefore neither would a $40 ticket.
I mean, it is appalling that this is anywhere on the government's radar with the situation we're in, but the industry would have to make some serious changes to their business model for it to work out for them, and a fight against both society and technology seems like a serious uphill battle to me. The most likely outcome would be that everybody loses.

Yeah, concerts are a rip-off...but I think they've been for at least few years. It seems like $40 after fees is the minimum for about 90% of decent shows. Of course, the best way to get around this is by winning tickets. I don't think I remember the last time I actually paid for tickets. The best part is, if you end up not getting anyone to go with (which is almost always the case, since most people I ever meet in real life have crappy music taste), you can usually sell the other ticket and not have to worry about getting in trouble for scalping because list price is like $40 anyway. Speaking of...guess who won 3rd row tickets to Coldplay? ;D

Speaking of...guess who won 3rd row tickets to Coldplay? ;D Yeah, I wasn't sure exactly how recent of a trend this has been, since 2010-2011 were total dead-zones for live entertainment, where the only shows I were seeing were established acts I've been long time fans of for years, in which case I was willing to part with a little more to attend. Now it seems every time I get my Live Nation concert updates, there's at least one show to add to my list, only the days of the $15 ticket for newcomers with just a couple hits under their belt seem to be long gone. It'd be nice if I could try and win these tickets but I live in a town that doesn't have radio support anymore for any of the music I listen to. Even the Detroit stations that would give away tix are based in Canada, so I'd have to get a passport and go through customs just to pick them up. Nice win on the Coldplay show, though. .

Saw Orgy headline the St. Patrick's local show. Many bands on the bill, and I didn't realize that even though I got there at 9, the bands listed outside didn't play until 11, and a lot of these probably totally unknowns played before that. Adema "co-headlined" and played the songs you're most likely to remember from them, and others. Jay Gordon was pretty talkative at the show. Orgy set list: 1. Suckerface 2. Dissention 3. 107 4. Vague 5. Chasing Sirens 6. Eva 7. Gender 8. Fetisha 9. Fiction (Dreams in Digital) 10. Revival 11. Stitches encore: 12. Blue Monday (w/ You Spin Me 'Round) I don't think I even realized 2 of the VT songs and it's not like the title was in the lyrics I looked up to decide what songs they were.

I have some catching up to do here... The show went just as I had expected--nothing flashy; just an evening at an intimate setting with a band with ten years of enjoyable hit singles. Similar to the Jimmy Eat World show I had seen a year ago. Middle Class RutBusy Bein' BornNew Low"Are You On Your Way", which had just entered the top 40 at the time, was not played. I only knew a handful of their other tracks. Feels like I should know more, given how much I enjoy all three of their hits. The last song Janus performed was "Eyesore", of course. I didn't get there early enough to see the rest of their set.

Odd Soul Prytania Blood Pressure Spotlight Tell Your Heart Heads Up Sun Ray Allies Clipping Backfire Plan B Calvaries Obsolete Walking Paranoia One More Odds In No Time Noticed Chaos Equals All Or Nothing Control Break the Same Quarantine Encore: You Are Mine Reset Typical I was familiar with six MUTEMATH tracks going in, and I figured that to be enough, as it typically would be with anyone I see. But not too far into the set, Paul exclaimed that they'd be honoring their promise to perform their Odd Soul record in its entirety. OK, I deserve it; should have done more research. 26 songs and over two hours later, holy s***, I felt like I'd just watched their entire discography. I so wasn't ready for that, but the performance and stage activities still made it interesting in spite of it.
Thrilled that they played half the new album (2/3, if you discount the 4 bonus tracks) and evenly split the other half of their set between the first two records. Would've loved to hear "Everybody's Fool," but "Imaginary" is certainly no slouch. I understand they're obligated to play "Call Me When You're Sober," but I've always found that song to be on the cheesy side, so I could have done without it. Odd choices for the first two encore songs. It seemed a little weak to end the show with "My Immortal," though I struggle to think of a perfect closer for them. Unfortunately, the crowd felt it necessary to sing along (which Amy continued to encourage : , which kind of ruined it for me. I guess I'll never get to hear her sing it live just by herself. Kind of annoyed at how their drummer was constantly spinning his sticks and tossing them to himself while he played. For a band like them, that just seemed to be a little cheesy. Hate to use that adjective twice now, but can't come up with a better synonym. Really good show, overall, though.

Born to Run 24. Dancing in the Dark 25. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) 26. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out Awesome show, underwhelming setlist. No opener, just 3:15 of Bruce Springsteen and he was running around the stage (and floor) and crowd surfing all night. He must be at least 60. E-Street band had great chemistry. A lot of the songs ran past 10 minutes. During "Waiting' on a Sunny Day" he had a ten year old come up and sing the chorus. Setlist, otoh, was disappointing. This was also echoed by big Springsteen fans. He didn't play a lot of crowd favorites or hits until the encore. Nothing off "Magic" (which was the album that made me a fan of his), yet he played all three singles from "The Rising". Of the seven or songs by him that I absolutely love, the only one he played was "Dancing in the Dark." We did get a pretty killer electric version of that, though.

19. She's Long Gone 19. I Got Mine
Setlist doesn't change from night to night, so since I'm not too familiar with the bulk of their discography (though I did stream the setlist songs a few times in advance), I typed it into my phone before the show and followed along. And while I didn't recognize those two older songs I marked with an asterisk like I thought I would, I can only assume that's what they were. The changeover took an exasperating forty-five minutes, with absolutely nothing perceivable happening on stage for the last 15 minutes of house music. Couldn't hold it against them, though, because the first words out of Dan's mouth were an apology about the extra long wait. Unfortunately, though, that ended up meaning they had to cut an encore song (played on every other tour stop I looked at) due to curfew.

I easily prefer Ceremonials over Lungs, so it suited me just fine that they played as many songs as they did from it. "Only If for a Night," the perfect opener, was a mesmerizing experience, considering how theatrical and artsy the band is and how beautiful the room was that the show was held in. I enjoy Florence's music, of course, but I'm not a diehard fan by any means, so unfortunately, after such a thrilling opener, my enthusiasm leveled off after that and "What the Water Gave Me." I did thoroughly enjoy "No Light" on a comparable level to "Only If for a Night," so she went out on another high note.

^I'm probably just about as much of a Florence fan as you are, if not less, and I tell ya, I'd love to see her show, simply because I know it wouldn't be like anything I'd ever seen before. I had no idea she was touring the US until a couple weeks ago, when I was checking a website for Indiana concerts (because I only get Ohio and Michigan shows sent to my inbox). Florence was one of about five acts I found there that I was uninformed of a US tour who I'd been interested in seeing. Of course, they all were in Indianapolis, which is an unrealistic 5 hour drive, and across a time zone. The Naked & Famous and The Joy Formidable were among the others, and the one thing they all have in common is that their radio support in this region leaves plenty to be desired, so it's no surprise they hopped right over us. Cool that you got to see them, though.
Anyway, awhile ago I had shortformed her name as 'Floxie' and I never came around to explain it all. It's a name that came to me in two separate dreams where I both listen to Alternative radio, and radio stations play her music often enough for their jocks to create a nickname for her. And I adopted it as my own, because even though I have no idea how that stuff works, somehow, I thought of it.

Thrice - Farewell Tour Emo's East, Austin - 5/10/2012
1. Yellow Belly 2. Image of the Invisible 3. The Artist in the Ambulance 4. Kill Me Quickly 5. Under a Killing Moon 6. Silhouette 7. In Exile 8. The Weight 9. Promises 10. Daedalus 11. Words in the Water 12. Of Dust and Nations 13. Firebreather 14. The Earth Will Shake 15. Broken Lungs 16. Digital Sea 17. Stare at the Sun 18. Deadbolt 19. To Awake and Avenge the Dead 20. Beggars
encore #1: 21. Come All You Weary 22. Phoenix Ignition 23. T & C
encore #2: 24. Anthology
Quite a set, longer and more well-rounded than the last. I bought a tour poster and got it signed by Dustin and Teppei (the Breckenridge brothers weren't out there signing). I went because I knew I'd miss seeing Thrice live and I'm aware of the hiatus. "The Whaler" hinted that it would come and "Anthology" kind of fulfilled it, which makes it the apt closer.
There's about a setlist worth of songs from the band I wanted to hear during the last five years that I either did not get to hear or the band did not play. 4 of those are from Beggars, although I was just unlucky on "Doublespeak." "Between the End and Where We Lie" is not only the only Vheissu song that hasn't been played, but it's apparently never been performed. There are 3 b-sides from the group I very much enjoy, although I realize they're not so fond of "Lullaby" themselves (the other two are "That Hideous Strength" and "Motion Isn't Meaning," which appeared on the poll). I know the band isn't hot on Identity Crisis, but they did play former staples from it.
I wonder if it's just one of those hiatus for a while/then play again kind of deals that's going to happen.
I missed O'Brother and some of Animals as Leaders btw.

Civil Twilight - 5/9/12 Beachland Ballroom - Cleveland, OH
Highway Direction Shape of a Sound Trouble Doorway It's Over Move/Stay Letters from the Sky River Sweet Resistance/Fire Escape [handwritten addendum] Holy Weather On the Surface Teardrop
I only knew the song titles because I got a picture of the setlist after the show. I was able to get "Letters from the Sky" on film. Hoped to get "Fire Escape" as well, which I'm totally into right now. Unfortunately, right before the song began, this Ellen DeGeneres and her equally unattractive partner decided to jump in front of me and act like a damn fool, which ruined everything. Even when the band was playing songs I didn't recognize, there at least were two gorgeous women in the front row dancing like Flo Rida was playing, in spite of it being Civil Twilight, and Ellen did whatever she could to obstruct my view of them, too.
There might have been 200 people at this show. I counted 43 when we arrived. There was an opening act who was forced into playing a time-killing extended set because the other opener had to cancel. I never could comprehend what they said the name of their band was, but being a two woman, one man act with a violin, keyboard, and bass, and they claimed they had a banjo player who was absent, I simply referred to them as Of Mumfords and Men.
In spite of the nature of my post to this point, I enjoyed this up close & almost personal show very much.

(B-Stage) Princess of China Up in Flames Warning Sign
A Hopeful Transmission Don't Let It Break Your Heart Viva La Vida Charlie Brown Paradise
Encore (on C stage): Us Against the World (with Happy Birthday sung to Will Champion) Speed Of Sound
Encore 2 (main stage): Clocks Fix You M.M.I.X. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall
Excellent performance and stage show wet blanketed by poor technical quality that was consistent throughout the entire show. Vocals were not very clear (which may or may not have been attributed to the location of my seat; I don't watch too many shows from the second deck of indoor arenas), and something was definitely wrong with the drum microphone, especially on the cymbals, which sounded like an about to be dropped phone call at all times. As far away we were for the whole show though, we ended up just a handful of rows behind the C-stage, which was nice to watch those couple songs from that vantage point.
The band has boat loads of hits, and it wouldn't be realistic for them to include even most of the second-tier hits they left off the setlist, which they could make a full length LP out of, but it was most disappointing for them to have not played "Lost!" and "Talk".
I'll wait for the next record to drop before seeing them again, but I can at least proudly say I finally have seen these guys.
Next up: System of a Down (with Deftones) - 8/14 Linkin Park (with Incubus & MUTEMATH) - 8/21

I missed some Deftones again, but at least got to see "You've Seen The Butcher" on, so it wasn't like the last time they were on the bill of a show I had a ticket for, which was with Alice In Chains two years ago at the same venue, where I missed the whole thing. Someday I'll get to see a full set of theirs. Good to see The System again, finally. I dreaded that, with no new material since I had last seen them, that they'd make this into a total "we like money" reunion tour and essentially make it a carbon copy of their show I saw in 2005. It didn't matter though; that was seven freakin' years ago. And the Hypnotize record wasn't even out yet ("Hypnotize" had just been released as a single, and none of its other tracks were played at that show). So I was mistaken right from jump street anyway. Anyway, they didn't disappoint. I'd like to see "Spiders" and "Innervision" before they decide to hang it up for good, though.
