Saw Neon Trees @ Music in the Park (a summer series of free concerts every Thurs in DT San Jose.) In true Music in the Park form, about 75% of the total audience (and 99.9% of the audience under 21) was stoned. Neon Trees were significantly better than last year at the Sunset Strip Music Fest, though. The sound was much improved and Tyler Glenn did not try too hard to be strange; in fact, he seemed pretty comfortably strange which actually made him pretty bad-@$$. I didn't bother with the setlist because they have one CD and I figure they more or less played it. Coming up: 7/21 The English Beat. because I have to wonder how many times they can keep on beating the same dead horse. They were here last year & I also saw them 5 and a half years ago (as part of a set with Thomas Dolby and Dramarama.) Still might go see them if I have nothing better to do. 7/28 Cracker 8/5 Dredg

I'm heading down to Chicago for Lollapalooza on Aug 5-8. I'm hoping to see Muse, Foo Fighters, Cee Lo Green, Lykke Li, Foster The People, Two Door Cinema Club, and more. Should be good, but I don't like how a lot of the bands I want to see have overlapping scheduled times.

That's awesome, man! Sucks about the overlapping times, though. When I went in '06, I don't remember having that much of a problem with that. To me, the whole event was all about the bands that I only care to see 1-2 of their songs, and then bolting off to see another. Like, all the bands that I didn't want to worry about driving an hour or two to see individually for two songs were all rolled into one three day event, which made it totally worth seeing. Because, with the marquee names, I wouldn't have a problem paying more and driving more to see in a location with less than 30,000 people watching. I actually have the list of everyone I watched on page 1 of this topic. Yeah, that was a good time there. Nothing like Chicago this time of year.
You're not the first I've seen complain about this overlap either, which is puzzling. Maybe they couldn't roll up enough corporate sponsorship dollars to have the number of stages they had five years ago?

Well it was mostly the headliners that all happen to play at once, probably due to the artists' individual scheduling. For instance, on Friday night I have to pick between seeing Muse, Girl Talk, Ratatat and Coldplay. I already saw Girl Talk a few weeks ago and I'll choose to see Muse because it's Muse, but I would have liked to see the other two.
The headliners on Saturday are My Morning Jacket, Beirut, Pretty Lights and Eminem, I don't particularly care for any of them.
However, on Sunday, I have to choose between Foo Fighters, Deadmau5 and Kid Cudi. I would be thrilled to see any of them, but I'm probably going to choose the Foos.

Hmm, they never had any more than one other act on stage while any headliner was playing when I was there. Blues Traveler was playing opposite Death Cab on the first night. Kanye West and Manu Chao had the second night. The Red Hot Chili Peppers had the third night all to themselves, and personally, I think it was a terrible experience. 30,000 people lined halfway back through the park, all of them sweaty as a pig in Baghdad, 29,000 probably off their ass drunk, idiots trying to crowdsurf up the line from 1.6 km ( ) away, so you have to be watching behind you for your own safety, and in front of you for the show that's taking place. Then they only wanted to play for an hour which isn't enough time to cover half their hits, but maybe they were just having mercy on us all. I didn't want to mention all that in case it was gonna get inside your head, but that should probably be less of a problem with other bands drawing at least some of the attention away. Maybe they do know what they're doing. But Coldplay vs. Muse though...sweet merciful s***.

I can't imagine what you described to be too enjoyable either, so the current arrangement could just be a compromise. Luckily, I'm going to be with a bunch of guys who are significantly taller than me, so they'll probably be the ones that will be watching for our safety, if necessary! But who knows, maybe Dave Grohl will have to throw somebody out of his show again! By the way, pigs probably aren't that sweaty in Baghdad, considering they don't have to worry about being consumed as they aren't halal.

By the way, pigs probably aren't that sweaty in Baghdad, considering they don't have to worry about being consumed as they aren't halal. Well, it's 130 unexaggerated degrees there every single day (that's 54°C), so they live a long, sweaty life over there . I kept telling all my weaker, more irritable acquaintances who were all freakin' out when it hit 100 (38°C) here, just to take a look at the international weather report. Except the ones that just get on the Facebook and post copy/paste a bunch of drivel all day about how our soldiers should be paid more than our President, because knowing the temperature over where they're stationed is only going to make them want to post that s*** more often!

Alright, I guess I won't mention about how much I missed winter when it hit 38ºC (feels like 48ºC with humidity) last week in Toronto, making it the second hottest day on record in history for this city.

And I guess just like how crash46 made his list, these are who I saw during Lollapalooza. Although my list wasn't as impressive as his. Day 1: Two Door Cinema Club [green](Caught last 4 songs)[/green] Tinie Tempah A Perfect Circle [green](a glimpse)[/green] Muse Day 2: Cee Lo Green [green](Caught last 5 songs, he played some Gnarls Barkley songs, so that was cool. But it annoying how obnoxious the crowd was because all they wanted to hear was "f*** You", which was obviously gonna be played last.)[/green] Lykke Li Beirut [green](About 4 songs)[/green] Eminem [green](About 3 songs, he got boring after a while when he started to kept talking. I would have cared more if it was 6 years ago.)[/green] Day 3: Switch [green](1/2 of Major Lazer and of producing for M.I.A. fame)[/green] Lissie [green](Caught the end of her set as I was walking by and saw her perform a cover of Kid Cudi featuring MGMT & Ratatat's "Pursuit Of Happiness")[/green] Cage the Elephant [green](2 songs in and I gave up because the stage was awfully placed on a downhill incline, so I couldn't even see anything.)[/green] Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley & Nas [green](Around 5 songs in, I wish I could have stayed longer though.)[/green] Arctic Monkeys [green](About 2 songs, mostly because they were delayed due to rain and I wanted to be at the stage when the act below was starting)[/green] Explosions In The Sky Foo Fighters [green](It started raining hard when they got on stage, so I was drenched in rain and mud. But it was totally worth it, and Dave Grohl kept yelling out "I don't give a f*** that it's raining!" Actually, it was probably for the best, because people were still carefully stepping around puddles, so I was able to get a better spot than if it didn't rain at all. The best part was when Dave said "Now we're gonna pretend to f***ing leave the stage and then come back. We're just gonna keep playing because we don't have a lot of time.")[/green] I would have liked to see Skylar Grey, but we were at a museum at the time so the schedule didn't work out. As well, I really wanted to see Foster the People but they were scheduled for Friday afternoon, and by the time we drove to Chicago, they were already done. They're coming to Toronto soon, but their show is already sold out (again). :mad face: On the other hand, Two Door Cinema Club, Lykke Li and Explosions In The Sky are also all coming to Toronto soon, so I may go to see them again.

I saw Dave Koz at the San Jose Jazz Festival this weekend. He was pretty awesome. Sad part is even though all of his songs have no words, I knew what at least half of them were called. I was mad that he didn't play my favorite song by him, "Can't Let You Go (The Sha La La La Song). But the poor guy has no format left; Smooth Jazz is flipping left and right.

[spoiler=Weezer WaMu Theatre, Seattle, WA August 19, 2011]1. My Name Is Jonas 2. No One Else 3. The World Has Turned and Left Me Here 4. Buddy Holly 5. Undone – The Sweater Song 6. Surf Wax America 7. Say It Ain't So 8. In the Garage 9. Holiday 10. Only in Dreams -intermission- 11. Tired Of Sex 12. Getchoo 13. No Other One 14. Why Bother? 15. Across The Sea 16. The Good Life 17. El Scorcho 18. Pink Triangle 19. Falling For You 20. Butterfly -encore- 21. Blast Off
They obviously played the Blue Album and Pinkerton from start to finish, in order. But that's all they did. Rivers didn't say a word to the crowd outside of the music. I guess that was the point, to recreate the album-listening experience live... but some more history behind the songs (or even just some general chatter) would have been cool. (The intermission did consist of a narrated slideshow of early Weezer pics.)
That, and even though I knew they were going to play Blue and Pinkerton in order, the actual execution left me somewhat disappointed. It's like watching a movie you've already seen before -- you know exactly what's going to happen going in. I mean, it's great that they played all their old classics, but cut the fat (maybe 7-8 out of the 20), mix it in with selected newer stuff, and that's a great show that would keep me on my toes.

The Austin stop was a two-day gig and apparently both days had kind of a mix of songs that happened before the individual albums were played. Of course, this is also taking word from setlist.fm

[spoiler=Jane's Addiction, Incubus, and Bush - 8/19/11 Livestrong Sporting Park Kansas City, KS] First of all, I'm gonna talk about why I was here. I had seven straight days of no business, and in more of a need of a getaway than I've had in several years, there was no way I was going to spend it all at home. So I decided that I was going somewhere, and that destination would be wherever the most interesting event going on was taking place, which was this show, and I also took in a Red Sox/Royals game at Kauffman Stadium, which everyone raves about and I'd wanted to witness for myself, and I was lucky enough to see the only competitive game of the four Boston wins over the weekend. (runaway train sentence alert!).
Neon Trees and Middle Class Rut were there too, and I heard Awolnation performing "Sail" as I walked toward the stadium, but with 1-album catalogues, I wasn't recording setlists. MC Rut did provide the highlight of the evening though. Tyler Glenn explained the song "1983" being inspired about his distinct memory of his birthing process (his way, of course). MC Rut had the next set, and before playing "Busy Bein' Born", Sean says "I'm sorry we don't have more time to talk about coming out of our mothers' pussies". That was awesome. Had no idea that "New Low" actually had both of them on vocals too.
Bush:
Machinehead Little Things The Chemicals Between Us Afterlife Everything Zen The Sound of Winter Glycerine Come Together (Beatles Cover) Comedown
Incubus:
Pardon Me I Wish You Were Here Adolescents Consequence Anna Molly Promises, Promises Circles Vitamin When It Comes In the Company of Wolves A Crow Left of the Murder Drive Isadore Nice To Know You Megalomaniac
Jane's Addiction:
Whores Ain't No Right Just Because Ted, Just Admit It... Been Caught Stealing End to the Lies Three Days Irresistible Force Mountain Song Stop!
Encore: Jane Says
Bush did what I'd hoped they'd do--play the hits. A little surprised they only could play nine songs and that they blew one of them on "Come Together", but the crowd liked it.
Loved watching Incubus. I was completely fine with them omitting "Stellar", "Warning", "Dig", "Love Hurts", etc. because they played "Vitamin" and "Consequence", and even "Circles" got an 'Oh, hell no!' out of me. For a restricted setlist, that was pretty amazing. Now I kind of want to see them on their own and they are coming around here three times by the end of the month.
Jane's Addiction was behind the eight-ball. They are headlining a radio festival, and they have, for all intents & purposes, two radio hits. That's the same as Middle Class Rut, who was playing four hours earlier on the B-stage. Perry was losing his voice and sounded awful, and that wasn't going to win anyone over. He also constantly called out the wrong state, and emphatically so ("F*** Kansas; this is Missouri!"), which, being a resident of neither state, I thought it had to have been a joke until he apologized after the encore once someone finally tipped him off that he was actually in Kansas. He did get a lot of ladies to show their 'titties', being in 'The Show-Me State' and all, so at least he was The Man in that regard. It was an entertaining show at least for me, a casual fan who knew more of the songs they played than I didn't know. The hardcores loved it of course, but a lot of people were saying they were awful after the show, and the size of the crowd that was watching Incubus had diminished to less than half for Jane's Addiction. I wish they could have represented themselves better.

[spoiler=blink-182 My Chemical Romance Manchester Orchestra]
Manchester Orchestra:
1. Pride 2. April Fool 3. Now That You're Home 4. My Friend Marcus 5. I've Got Friends 6. Mean Everything to Nothing 7. I Can Barely Breathe (Uh...what? Even if you're not going to do "Simple Math," at least throw this crowd another one they might know: "Shake It Out." Pure balls. And most of these album cuts aren't exactly the first that come to mind when you've got a half hour to win over a crowd. I didn't even remember the names of some of these songs, so I didn't bother trying to put the set list into my phone. This is from setlist.fm)
My Chemical Romance:
01. Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) 02. Give 'Em Hell, Kid 03. Planetary (Go!) 04. Helena 05. The Kids from Yesterday 06. The Only Hope for Me Is You 07. Welcome to the Black Parade 08. Destroya 09. Mama 10. Teenagers 11. I'm Not Okay (I Promise) 12. Famous Last Words (Nice to see "Na Na Na" played live without having to clean up a drunken broad's vomit this time. "Give 'Em Hell, Kid" was a nice surprise. Loved hearing the alternate universe smash Danger Days hits "Planetary" and "The Kids from Yesterday" for what could possibly be the last time. Could've done without "Hope," "Destroya," and "Mama" if it meant hearing "Bulletproof Heart," "Sing" and "The Ghost of You" instead. (Seriously! It's not one of my favorite songs of theirs, but how are they not gonna play "Sing" on this tour?? That's nuts!) Overjoyed they played "Famous Last Words," as that was maddeningly absent from their headlining set last December.)
blink-182
01. Feeling This 02. Up All Night 03. The Rock Show 04. What's My Age Again? 05. Down 06. I Miss You 07. Stay Together for the Kids 08. Dumpweed 09. Always 10. Violence 11. After Midnight 12. First Date 13. Heart's All Gone 14. Man Overboard 15. Ghost on the Dance Floor 16. All the Small Things 17. Josie
Encore: (Travis Barker aerial drum solo) 18. Carousel 19. Dammit (A little too similar to their 2009 show. Yeah, there were 4 new songs, but I got an extra song last time. The encore was essentially xeroxed from 2 years ago. Their show needs to be scaled down. Way too much money changed hands for the pointless Honda Civic sponsorship, Tom basically sabotages his singing on purpose, and reunion hype couldn't even get the shed half full. If they wanna show they belong in sheds, they need to put more effort into their performances.
Not sorry I went, because there was nowhere else in town I would've rather been, but I was underwhelmed, having seen all three bands much better in the past.) [/spoiler]

[spoiler=Incubus Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, Toronto, ON August 28, 2011]Tom Morello a.k.a. the Nightwatchman was the opening act. I've never heard his solo material before, but I liked what I heard and he did a great job at getting the crowd worked up.
As for Incubus: 1. Pardon Me 2. Wish You Were Here 3. Adolescents 4. Anna Molly 5. Promises, Promises 6. If Not Now, When? 7. Circles 8. When It Comes 9. Consequence 10. Vitamin 11. In the Company of Wolves 12. Defiance (Acoustic) 13. Dig (Refined Version) 14. Just A Phase 15. A Crow Left of the Murder 16. Drive 17. Thieves 18. Nice To Know You
Encore: 19. Megalomaniac 20. Tomorrow's Food
Incubus put on a solid performance with a setlist quite resembled what Steve posted from the festival. Despite the gems that I didn't expect them to throw in such as "When It Comes", "Consequence" and "Vitamin", the glaring omissions are too much to ignore. In addition to the ones Steve mentioned such as "Stellar", "Warning" and "Love Hurts" as well as "Oil And Water" or "Black Heart Inertia"; the last time when they were on tour, my favourite performances from them were "Are You In?" and "Aqueous Transmission", and neither made it to the setlist this time around. A little disappointed, I have to say.[/spoiler]

For my own posterity...
Both of these are bands The Girl introduced me to. These shows were within days of each other.
Handsome Furs:
01. When I Get Back 02. Damage 03. All We Want, Baby, Is Everything 04. Memories of the Future 05. Bury Me Standing 06. What About Us 07. Repatriated 08. Radio Kaliningrad 09. Serve the People
Encore: 10. Legal Tender 11. Agony [b-side I wasn't familiar with]
Didn't realize it at the time, but they didn't play anything from their first album, which is my favorite of the three. For as newly familiar with them as I am, 11 songs was the perfect amount for my attention span.
Deerhunter:
01. Desire Lines 02. Hazel St. 03. Don't Cry 04. Memory Boy 05. Little Kids 06. Revival 07. Never Stops 08. Nothing Ever Happened 09. Helicopter 10. Green Fuz [Green Fuz by way of The Cramps cover]
Encore: 11. Cover Me (Slowly)/Agoraphobia 12. He Would Have Laughed
Didn't realize it at the time, but they didn't play anything from their first album* either.

[spoiler=Aloe Blacc & the Grand Scheme, Twin Shadow, Young the Giant, Cee-Lo Green, TV on the Radio and Stevie Wonder Austin City Limits 2011 (Saturday) Sept. 17, 2011: Zilker Park, Austin, TX] I missed out on Friday, which was admittedly kind of a bummer. I figured I would just come back to S.A. by Sunday night, when I could get other things taken care of before another day of school. However, Saturday's latest bands were what had me stoked about it. In fact, TVOTR and Stevie Wonder are a primary reason I went.
People who are at the festival range from those who go to see the certain artists they love who are billed on the set and people who love traveling to these festivals. I didn't buy mine regularly, but got the wristband from someone willing to sell.
Before the evening, there was this other person who also was interested in seeing the stuff & until the YTG set, we stuck together. I decided first to go see Aloe Blacc & the Grand Scheme, who I think pretty much played songs from Good Things, including the album's title track, remake of "Femme Fatale" by the Velvet Underground, and of course "I Need a Dollar." There was a medley that came around after that, including many soul songs. Aloe had quite a stage presence and his band was great.
I didn't know Twin Shadow, but sort of knew the name and was most interested in them. Some people define their sound as "chillwave." They impressed me and I'm interested in hearing more of them after seeing this set.
Young the Giant have a great lead vocalist, but it doesn't stop the songs from being rather generic indie rock. I guess they did one song from when they were known as the Jakes. "My Body" was the final song of the set and had quite a good crowd response.
On my own, I chose to see some of City and Colour before heading out to the autograph tent for TV on the Radio. Dallas Green is actually a great singer and the style was very pleasant.
I heard Iron & Wine while waiting for the autograph tent, and the songs were not as spare as I expected. Many indie acts tend to like the jams when going live, and I guess it's what suits amphitheater sets.... And I did get to sort of meet David, Kyp & Tunde later.
Everyone was in the park at like 5pm or so.
Cee-Lo Green: 01. The Lady Killer Theme (Intro) /Bright Lights Bigger City 02. ChamPain 03. (can't remember or find) 04. Closet Freak 05. Don't Cha (most famously known in Pussycat Dolls rendition) 06. Satisfied 07. Crazy (w/ Moby's Natural Blues sampled) 08. Run 09. f*** You 10. Rock the Casbah (The Clash remake) 11. Gone Daddy Gone (Violent Femmes remake) 12. Smiley Faces
TV on the Radio: 01. Halfway Home 02. The Wrong Way 03. Caffeinated Consciousness 04. Blues from Down Here 05. Will Do 06. Red Dress 07. Young Liars 08. Staring at the Sun 09. Repetition 10. Wolf Like Me
Stevie Wonder: 01. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) (Marvin Gaye remake) 02. My Eyes Don't Cry 03. Master Blaster (Jammin') 04. The Way You Make Me Feel (Michael Jackson remake) 05. Higher Ground 06. Living for the City 07. Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing 08. When I Fall in Love (Nat King Cole remake) 09. Ribbon In The Sky 10. Overjoyed 11. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours 12. Sir Duke 13. I Wish 14. Do I Do 15. For Once In My Life 16. My Cherie Amour 17. I Just Called to Say I Love You 18. Check on Your Love (working title to new song) 19. Superstition 20. Isn't She Lovely (chorus and one verse) 21. Fever (Little Willie John remake) (partial) 22. As
An hour later, I saw Cee-Lo's set. I was kind of far back and the Bud Light stage didn't have the finest sound, as far as being able to hear the music further back. I was glad about the inclusion of "Closet Freak." The set also included "Don't Cha" which he wrote and produced (and also, the PCD version overshadowed the Tori Alamaze version quickly) and obviously "Crazy" and a couple of other Gnarls Barkley songs (also the "Gone Daddy Gone" cover). "f*** You" was the one the crowd all knew, obviously.
It was all about TVOTR for me. Nine Types of Light amazed me almost as much as Return to Cookie Mountain, so I really just wanted to see at least one show from them supporting this album. It was a pretty balanced blend of songs, though I would have preferred at least a half hour longer set from the guys. No surprise to me that David has filled in the bass during their current shows.
Stevie Wonder was kind of a bust because it was the stage that Cee-Lo played and if you're far back enough it's either like you were listening to just My Morning Jacket instead (who played at a different stage) or like some mashup of the two. Due to this and the length of some of SW's actual songs, I don't think I had honestly realized how long the set actually was.
Also: Many spotted Christian Bale in the park.

[spoiler text=Uproar Festival - 9/21/11 w/Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet for My Valentine Cleveland, OH] BFMV: Saw four songs, two of which were "Scream Aim Fire" and "Tears Don't Fall". Completely forgotten about how sick the former could be.
Seether: Identical to set from 7/15/11, but added "Tonight" before "Country Song".
Three Days Grace: The Good Life Break Pain (I Hate) Everything About You Home (with "Lose Yourself" interlude) Never Too Late Riot Animal I Have Become
Avenged Sevenfold: Nightmare Critical Acclaim Beast and the Harlot Welcome to the Family I Won't See You Tonight Part 1 Afterlife Not Ready To Die Scream A Little Piece of Heaven Bat Country Unholy Confessions
I wasn't going to go to this, having already seen them twice this year, but after reading the Billboard article that rockmaniac posted on Pulse, the setlist variation and stage description did it for me. Already knowing ahead of time what the core group of songs were, and which others were in the pool, I was ecstatic over how it turned out. M. struggled pretty bad with the high notes in IWSYT, but there are reasons why bands rarely play certain songs. 'A' for effort.
Probably seeing them one last time Nov. 30.[/spoiler]
And I wanted Sunny to know that at his recommendation, I stopped and ate at Melt's on the way there. Good call, man. f***in' A good call. They told me that what I ate ("The Godfather"- grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with lasagna, basically) was going to be on the Best Thing I Ever Ate show this Monday. I kinda want to watch that show, if only because it's what I had there, even though I've never really gotten into any shows like that.

I will have to set my PVR to record whenever it trickles down to Food Network Canada. For those not in the know, it was one of the stops my friend and I made during our Food Network-themed road trip back in May. We found out about it through www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TtkfwFders. And yes, it's really that good... that I would travel back to Cleveland sometime in the future to eat there. We had the Tokyo Tuna Melt and the Chorizo & Potato.

Uproar Festival An evening with Avenged Sevenfold
No spoiler tags because I'm pretty sure Steve and I are the only ones that go to their shows and he already posted his setlist.
01. Nightmare 02. Critical Acclaim 03. Beast and the Harlot 04. Welcome to the Family 05. Buried Alive 06. Not Ready to Die 07. Afterlife 08. A Little Piece of Heaven 09. Scream 10. Bat Country 11. Unholy Confessions
"Not Ready to Die" was unexpected and unnecessary, but my god, was that nevertheless amazing to behold live. Always love hearing songs they otherwise never play. Also unexpected, unnecessary, yet still welcome, was "A Little Piece of Heaven," which apparently is one of their more popular fan favorite songs worldwide. I figured they would've retired that one when Jimmy died. I know they can't play all the hits every time now that their catalog is getting so deep, and I don't necessarily need them to, but especially considering it's their most recent hit, I missed hearing "So Far Away." I understand that each city's setlist was fan-voted this time (actually I'd forgotten), but it seems like the band would overrule the fans in that case and insert it into the set regardless.

Uproar FestivalAn evening with Avenged Sevenfold Yeah. Well their next tour is going to have Hollywood Undead, Asking Alexandria, and some other pretty s***ty act (Black Veil Brides?). Seems like it's always been the norm for it to be a chore to sit through all their openers, so the Uproar tour, for me at least, relatively speaking, was one of their more compelling ones. I tell ya, it seems to me that every time you and I both get to see them on the same tour, they play that one for me but not you. Almost as if they'd been following us on this board where they'd know it would be in the upper half of my A7X album ranker and near/at the bottom of yours. I personally wouldn't have minded them playing a different song at that time, with all the times I'd seen it performed. But I was watching Syn the whole time during this song because his actions and mannerisms were priceless.

Seems like it's always been the norm for it to be a chore to sit through all their openers, so the Uproar tour, for me at least, relatively speaking, was one of their more compelling ones. I'd be going to that tour too, of course, if it was coming anywhere near me. And as much as I'd like to have the artists' cut of my ticket go directly to Avenged's pockets, I'd still feel like going early enough to check out the openers, if only out of morbid curiosity. I haven't seen HU perform with their new singer, Asking Alexandria have only gotten bigger since I saw them headline an 8-band bill and had little clue who they were, and I'm (again) morbidly curious about how Black Veil Brides are live. Regarding opening bands, it was funny, at the Uproar tour last night, my friend that ordered our tickets couldn't get everybody he had to order for sitting next to each other and in the same row. There weren't any empty seats next to or around my friend that I could move to, so I had to sit in a loosey by myself. My neighbors were these buddies and their teen sons, one of whom was using my seat by the time I finally showed up at 9:30pm. You could tell one of the dads was a little annoyed at my late arrival, but what was he gonna do? That's my seat. He said something to me like, "You missed a hell of a show so far." As tactfully and politely as I could, I said Avenged was the only band on the bill I cared about.

Saw Moving Mountains/O'Brother/La Dispute/Thrice last night. MM are excellent. (and existed well before Thrice song of same title ). It was a great mix of post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, indie rock and post-rock. I definitely look forward to hearing both of their full length albums after the show. O'Brother are decent, definitely the most atmospheric of the acts on the bill. Things were pretty laid back at this point of the show. Then La Dispute came on, and this is the point when everybody decided to mosh. And this person kept on elbowing my shoulder at that time. That said, the band does have good energy. Expect the audience to get hectic if you're near the front for them. Thrice set list: 01. Yellow Belly 02. The Weight 03. Promises 04. All the World Is Mad 05. In Exile 06. Call It in the Air 07. Silhouette 08. Cold Cash and Colder Hearts 09. Circles 10. Treading Paper 11. Blur 12. Words in the Water 13. Of Dust and Nations 14. Firebreather 15. The Earth Will Shake 16. Anthology encore: 17. Phoenix Ignition 18. To Awake and Avenge the Dead /missed post-show acoustic set emoticon used for songs I'm really glad they played. The energy really stands out when you hear the songs from the new album. There was crowd surfing and such during this, but it was a lot nicer than the La Dispute crowd. Ed's bass lines are standing out more than they used to. "Phoenix" has been brought back during this tour after about a 7 year absence. I'm glad we were the first date of the tour to get "Of Dust and Nations," but not enough Vheissu, personally. Then again, a big majority of that set list is from the last two albums.

Got to see Battles, really enjoyed it. :-) Nisennenmondai opened and were a lot of fun, even as an all-instrumental band. The majority of Battles' set was from Gloss Drop, and they did their best-known songs, like "Atlas," "Tonto," "Ice Cream" and "My Machines." Tyondai is no longer their vocalist and there's 3 songs they played on new album with guest spots (the other one being "Sweetie & Shag") that showed the vocalists on the screen over the taped vocal tracks. Most of their songs are instrumental, though. I loved the lighting and screen setup at this one.
I find it hilarious that Helmet had a show in Austin the same night (John Stanier is the drummer of the group, and in math rock groups, that's the lead instrument.)
I liked the spoken part before encore when guitarist/keyboardist/effects person Ian Williams referenced his former band Don Caballero in part, and then a political bit of a spoken part amused me.
Is it just me or is everything billed for the fall.
Upcoming: Peter Murphy/She Wants Revenge: Nov. 5

Hussle Club opened up the PM/SWR show last night. I learned it's actually a solo artist, though there was this pretty full band there, and that he doesn't really have official releases. There were like 5 or 6 songs on the set.
She Wants Revenge songs I noticed: Written in Blood These Things True Romance Up in Flames This Is the End Take the World Disconnect Out of Control Red Flags and Long Nights Tear You Apart [actually, I think that's very nearly complete] "Must Be the One" wasn't played.
Peter Murphy songs I remembered announced and/or noticed: Memory Go I'll Go with Your Knife I Spit Roses Silent Hedges [Bauhaus] Hurt [Nine Inch Nails cover] In the Flat Field [Bauhaus] All Night Long Gaslit
encore: A Strange Kind of Love (w/ some "Bela Lugosi's Dead" lyrics) Marlene Dietrich's Last Poem Cuts You Up

Just noticed that I'm the one primarily posting new albums I add to my collection, while you're the one predominantly posting set lists from shows these days.
I've kinda fallen off the setlist horse, ironically, because I see so many shows and a fun part of one of my jobs is finding setlists lying around the day after.

Really long set (2 hour and 20 minutes), with no opening act. It was scheduled for 7:30pm, but they didn't start until 8:40pm. And yes, they really played the last song 5 times in a row, lol. It was crazy.
