And it's here! 40. A b-side from one of the album's international singles was their sole alternative chart-topper. Three of five singles here were one-word titles.In/out.More to do with a phrase of the band/album's name than any single. Biggest hit here samples/loops a bigger song from a well respected band. [fixed]"b-side" track was used for a soundtrack after album's course.I looked this up because it was bothering me, and now I'm mad, because all of the clues are really good and I couldn't even come close.

New page? Well then I guess here I could update clues since the regulars have posted guesses by now.
40. A b-side from one of the album's international singles was their sole alternative chart-topper. Three of five singles here were one-word titles. In/out. More to do with a phrase of the band/album's name than any single. Biggest hit here samples/loops a bigger song from a well respected band. [fixed] "b-side" track was used for a soundtrack after album's course. It was released in the mid-'90's. Garbage - s/t (a Nick O!)
39. What was originally to be the lead single got left off the album and put on a hits collection, because the band felt the song was too poppy for the album. The first single with the lead singer contributing to songwriting managed to scrape the alternative chart. The Bravery supported tour dates on the album. The lead single didn't get to the Top 20, but managed over 15 weeks on the alternative chart. The best-of single isn't as well known as some stuff from particular album, not suprising for a band that's been around for as long. Artist has plenty of already correctly guessed entries. Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel (WotUNeed)
28. Hole reference. It's their only album without a charting single on the alternative chart.
27. Released at the opposite end of the year. The artist's first entry here but not the last.
24. Except for part of its next release their albums are all one word titles. The band's first stuff to cross over to pop, out of a few-several songs. OutKast - Stankonia (friday)
23. Some people interpret the album as being themed about a serial killer. Previously incorrectly guessed. If it isn't easy from there I'll make a more thorough extended one. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia (friday)
21. The first album to not feature the (full) classic lineup and only one excluding a particular member. Didn't really sell anywhere near its predecessors, but has sold more than its follow ups. Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (friday)

IIIIIIIII'VE GOT IT!!!!![/George Costanza, triumphant after figuring out how Jerry can switch from dating a non-laugher to her perfect roommate.] 40. A b-side from one of the album's international singles was their sole alternative chart-topper. "#1 Crush" (b-side to "Vow"'s international single. Technically the hit American version was the Nellee Hooper remix featured on and promoted from the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, though. Jerk. ) Three of five singles here were one-word titles. "Vow," "Queer," "Milk" n/a: "Only Happy When It Rains," "Stupid Girl" In/out.More to do with a phrase of the band/album's name than any single. "Garbage in, garbage out" Biggest hit here samples/loops a bigger song from a well respected band. [fixed] Didn't remember this clue when I had my "eureka!" moment, but "Stupid Girl" loops the introductory drum pattern from "Train in Vain" by the Clash. "b-side" track was used for a soundtrack after album's course. Didn't remember this clue, but I mentioned this above. It was released in the mid-'90's. Didn't ever see/need this clue, but it was released in 1995. (Obviously.)

"#1 Crush" (b-side to "Vow"'s international single. Technically the hit American version was the Nellee Hooper remix featured on and promoted from the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, though. Jerk. I guess you learn something new everyday. I guess since I was too young to really follow at the time I didn't know that. Also, another thing I learned was from Wikipedia: Around the time of "Milk"'s main release "Supervixen" was used as a radio-only single at the time. Or at least it was intended to be. Oh, and as for the two "easter egg" albums: Yeah, I don't have either of those. Don't know if I really know any songs from that LTJ release. I have the surrounding 311, though.

Also, another thing I learned was from Wikipedia: Around the time of "Milk"'s main release "Supervixen" was used as a radio-only single at the time. Or at least it was intended to be. If I had that int'l single here with me, I'd upload the original "#1 Crush" so you could hear the difference. Shirley's vocals are exactly the same, but the background music is totally different. One of the reasons why I love KNSX so much (and am crushed that for the past two years I haven't been able to get it in my home or my car where I live. I guess when they say "St. Louis and points beyond," the emphasis should be the "points beyond" and not the "St. Louis" city limits), is that then and to this day they'll still play "Supervixen." Oh. They'll still play "Not My Idea," too. Actually, both of those much more than they ever play(ed) "Vow" or "Milk."

Since none of the newer stuff emitted any guesses, I'll extend 'em:
28. Hole reference. It's their only album without a charting single on the alternative chart. Sometimes typeset as compound word, sometimes as separate.
27. Released at the opposite end of the year. The artist's first entry here but not the last. Michael's guess being a month title was on the right track. And at least, it was six months apart from month of title.
24. Except for part of its next release their albums are all one word titles. The band's first stuff to cross over to pop, out of a few-several songs. They have a follow-up that sold better but otherwise this was their best selling album. Oh, and they had a correctly guessed album on this round.
23. Some people interpret the album as being themed about a serial killer. Previously incorrectly guessed. If it isn't easy from there I'll make a more thorough extended one. Well if it's here and this high, it's definitely not this.
21. The first album to not feature the (full) classic lineup and only one excluding a particular member. Didn't really sell anywhere near its predecessors, but has sold more than its follow ups. Between the predecessor album and this one there were two moderately-well charting soundtrack hits.

More specific extensions and a new set!
28. Hole reference. It's their only album without a charting single on the alternative chart. Sometimes typeset as compound word, sometimes as separate. The Neptunes remix the lead single as a b-side of particular single.
27. Released at the opposite end of the year. The artist's first entry here but not the last. Michael's guess being a month title was on the right track. And at least, it was six months apart from month of title. As obvious as I feel it is that I like this artist the particular album was possibly not on anyone else's map. This is one of the most recent entries on here.
The new stuff: 20. Depending on how you look at it, this is the newest entry of these albums.
19. Gave them three Top 30 alternative hits, no more and no less. Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots (a Nick O!)
18. It did give them a minor hit on the Active rock chart a few years ago.
17. The album that broke a certain band to the mainstream and is their earliest entry here.
16. Some argue that the perma-absent members of the group didn't really perform here. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (a Nick O!)
15. A previously guessed album, which has a nest on the cover.
14. Featuring the first video aired on the MTV2 network. Beck - Odelay (a Nick O!)
13. One of these songs is used for the opening of Napoleon Dynamite. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells (a Nick O!)
12. Classic alternative guitarist joins the bill. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (a Nick O!)
11. The minor hit here has stood well in being used for things like a TV show, possibly more well known by some than the actual bigger hit (from follow-up release).

Time to make an update.
28. Hole reference/lyric. It's their only album without a charting single on the alternative chart. Sometimes typeset as compound word, sometimes as separate. The Neptunes remix the lead single as a b-side of particular single. Also kind of a self-refrerence when they use it as the title, as half of it is artist's name. Garbage - Beautiful Garbage (WotUNeed)
Limit the month to something that also is used as a woman's name. Also, fits a later clue as well. VAST - April (a Nick O!)
The new stuff: 20. Depending on how you look at it, this is the newest entry of these albums. The band's first release after leaving the major label. Thrice - The Alchemy Index (a Nick O!)
18. It did give them a minor hit on the Active rock chart a few years ago. They have another correctly guessed entry here. Title's a compound word, single (US) title suggests something isn't too deep.
17. The album that broke a certain band to the mainstream and is their earliest entry here. Or at least in the U.S. And two of its singles apparently were banned at the time for content, one of those about S&M. Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward (WotUNeed)
15. A previously guessed album, which has a nest on the cover. One guy in this group also produces for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (as well as this group's releaes). Opened for NIN prior to North American release of the album. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain (a Nick O!)
11. The minor hit here has stood well in being used for things like a TV show, possibly more well known by some than the actual bigger hit (from follow-up release). Eye, ear, hand & TV. VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater (crash46)

18. It did give them a minor hit on the Active rock chart a few years ago. They have another correctly guessed entry here. Title's a compound word, single (US) title suggests something isn't too deep. May have not taken commercial _flight_ but still a cult progressive band.

Haven't really listened to this band yet, but why did I completely forget about this album's existence? I was aware of In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet, but at some point along the way, I totally forgot about this album.

^It seems like the unanimous praise/general hype for those two albums are bigger on the whole. Also, since my shelf covers even more stuff I'll include some of that along with what we've had so far. 136. The Crow soundtrack 135. The White Stripes - s/t 134. The Hives - The Black and White Album 133. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist 132. Rancid - Life Won't Wait 131. VNV Nation - Futureperfect 130. Pixies - Doolittle 129. Tripping Daisy - Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb 128. Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One 127. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium 126. Depeche Mode - The Singles 81>85 125. Prince - The Hits 124. U2 - The Joshua Tree 123. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl 122. Deftones - White Pony 121. Thom Yorke - The Eraser 120. Tool - Undertow 119. The Clash - London Calling 118. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me 117. Violent Femmes - Add It Up (1981-1993) 116. Massive Attack - Mezzanine I tend to be a real big "Man Next Door" fan for some reason. 115. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 114. The Cure - Disintegration. 113. Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet 112. Stevie Wonder - The Definitive Collection 111. Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter 110. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf 89. Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses 88. Kaiser Chiefs - Employment But I wasn't anywhere near as into the next album. 87. Thrice - The Illusion of Safety 86. Big Punisher - Capital Punishment 85. Minor Threat - Complete Discography 84. AFI - The Art of Drowning 83. Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine 82. Nirvana - Nevermind 81. Harvey Danger - King James Version 80. Fugees - The Score 79. The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives 78. Lupe Fiasco - The Cool 77. Tool - 10,000 Days 76. Gravity Kills - s/t 75. Stone Temple Pilots - Purple 63. Nirvana - In Utero 62. A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step 61. Björk - Post 60. The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 59. Nine Inch Nails - Broken (EP) 58. Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground 57. Radiohead - Kid A 56. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine 55. Weezer - (Blue Album) 54. Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way 53. Depeche Mode - Exciter 52. The White Stripes - Icky Thump 51. Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor---- 50. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade I didn't really get this album until after its course, but had always been interested. But it was above my expectations. Each passing release has been a considerable improvement from what came before it, and I knew their songs before they got big.49. System of a Down - Toxicity 48. U2 - Achtung Baby 47. The Velvet Underground & Nico - s/t 46. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 45. Violent Femmes - s/t 44. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat 43. Muse - Black Holes and Revelations 42. Hot Hot Heat - Elevator 41. The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness I don't disagree with the album's regard among fans but it's such an endurance test though to be fair all of the mid-'90's-to-turn of century Pumpkins releases are. But if this was just Twilight to Starlight the entry would probably be considerably higher.40. Garbage - s/t 39. Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel 38. Joy Divison - Heart and Soul (box) As I said, I felt like including both albums but also including the key singles and out-takes, all here.37. Portishead - Dummy I don't know why I didn't include this last time I did one of these. I didn't have the self-titled yet, but this...36. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods 35. Thrice - The Artist in the Ambulance 34. Radiohead - The Bends 33. Tool - Ænima 32. The Beatles - Abbey Road 31. Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing 30. Depeche Mode - Black Celebration 29. System of a Down - Mezmerize The gap between Hypnotize, Steal and s/t is relatively narrow fo my money.28. Garbage - Beautiful Garbage 27. VAST - April Haha, I think I uploaded this thing about a year ago & it might still be up there. I own 2 versions of the album and one is the limited edition.26. OutKast - Aquemini 25. AFI - Decemberunderground 24. OutKast - Stankonia 23. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia 22. AFI - Sing the Sorrow I felt like I ranked it low the last times but did not realize how much I liked it. Good sequencing can turn an excellent album to something perhaps even better which is what happens here. My fandom increased after Decemberunderground and Blaqk Audio, though.21. Smashing Pumpkins - Adore This & above are great soundtracks for the autumn. (In this case, acoustic numbers like "To Sheila" and "Once Upon a Time" or even piano ballads like "Crestfallen" and "Blank Page" or gothic like "Behold!") On a slightly unrelated note anyone with the album should check out "For Martha" which is worth its time frame. Amazing, sophisticated, beautiful track. Take your time on the rest 20. Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vols. I-IV I decided that the new volumes were good enough to get included as well.19. Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots 18. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia 17. Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward I don't think that "Blasphemous Rumors" would be that controversial even ten years later (let alone now) and wouldn't have really gotten the ban on radio. I never really perceived it as anti-religion (and even the band says it's not the meaning) and there's been much worse out there. Oh, and the middle three songs have different relationship views that I at one time or another relate to.16. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream 15. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain 14. Beck - Odelay 13. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells 12. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank For me, this is their release that doesn't have any filler. While I think it's relatively underrated I am not the only one (scroll to bottom) who thinks that.11. VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater aNickO!: 74.5 WotUNeed: 18.5 friday: 14 crash46: 11 Mega248: 1 radical347: 1 Top ten is coming later.

12. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank For me, this is their release that doesn't have any filler. I think it's relatively underrated.Just last night at my friend's house, he was asking me if I'd heard it (I've had it burned since last year, but still have not listened to it or my burned copy of Good News), saying it was now his favorite MM album and that one of the songs (maybe the first one, "March Into the Sea") was among his Top 5-10 songs of all-time.

Yeah, on that album there's never a song that makes me antsy to press the skip button. Also, it never seems overlong which can't be said about the earlier work. Not even the slightly epic "Spittin' Venom" is much of an endurance test at eight and a half minutes. In addition to the radio songs they have videos for "Little Motel" (listed on Wikipedia as third single from album), "Invisible, and People as Places as People." "Invisible" actually somewhat resembles the hit single "Dashboard" but is the only song there that sounds like it. What's interesting about Good News is that I like the first four or so actual songs and the last three songs but the stuff in between is what I can't really get into. ----------- As for some of the final clues: 10. The most famous song has been often covered and even used in the movie Friday Night Lights. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come (a Nick O!) 09. Dutch art movement. The White Stripes - De Stijl (crash46) 08. Lead single contains no drums. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (a Nick O!) 07. TV networks aired the international lead single but radio used a different song instead at the time. Radiohead - OK Computer (a Nick O!) 06. Using multiple tracks, string samples & some interpolations. Garbage - Version 2.0 (crash46) 05. As many of six of these songs were at least intended to be singles. 04. Double vinyl version didn't see the light of day in release until a few years later. Tool - Lateralus (crash46) 03. Most audio is intended with this audience. VAST - Music for People (a Nick O!) 02. Got shelved and replaced with something that was merely just alternate versions of the songs before the record got released. VAST - Nude (crash46) 01. Not something you'd expect a Britpop producer to involve himself with. Thrice - Vheissu (crash46) Oh, and keep in mind that 1 & 2 are pretty much interchangable for me. It's like a flip-coin toss thing for me.

As for some of the final clues:
10. The most famous song has been often covered and even used in the movie Friday Night Lights. The only band left without an additional entry. One band that covered this song has a rhyming name of this group's.
07. TV networks aired the international lead single but radio used a different song instead at the time. This is the record where the unanimous praise started to really get spoken from about the band.
05. As many of six of these songs were at least intended to be singles (for of 'em were). The band's only _multi_-platinum album in the U.S.

Refused is correct, but Black Holes was #43.
05. As many of six of these songs were at least intended to be singles (for of 'em were). The band's only _multi_-platinum album in the U.S. Use your process of elimination. On tournaments of songs (on this board) around this era, three songs (album's main hits/classics) were used and all of them got to the final round. 2 ended up as winning songs. None of those tournaments were based on current songs, and it was from much earlier. Earliest-released entry in the top ten.
