I absolutely love this song, arguably the best of Old Mode. I like how it's got Martin singing on the chorus, yet you can still hear Dave on the verses. It always makes me happy when I hear this song.

It's pre-Violator. Made even before the stateside breakthrough "People Are People".

Everything Counts is off of Depeche Mode's "Construction Time Again" album which came out in 1983.
Violator came out in 1990.

This isn't one of my favorites from them. I think the lyrics in the chorus just sound kinda weird, and Martin's vocals really don't do anything to pick it up for me. I mean, it's standard fare for them, pretty much, but never struck me the way "People are People," "The Policy of Truth," "Never Let Me Down Again," etc. have.

The live version released as a single in '89 is chilling. 100,000 fans singing along for minutes after the song ends. They put that version on the end of their 86>98: The Singles double-disc compilation. That's the only version I've heard.
