Setlist from dredg's 11/14 show (spoiler space for those whose show has yet to come...) I went ahead and looked at the list, because I had no clue about what songs to expect when I go and how many songs from Leitmotif, which I've never heard, to expect. I plan on finding Leitmotif to download and listen to sometime tomorrow, but seeing as they played nothing from that album, I won't worry a whole lot about familiarizing myself with the songs before I go. I bought Leifmotif at the show for $10, along with one of their snazzy posters, which is now framed and hanging in my room. They also were raffling away a piece of their artwork, which I thought about buying a ticket for, until the birthday boy next to me tossed down $20 of tickets which gets you a boatload of bonus tix on top of that. And he didn't even win it! Although he watched the show next to us and walked away with a drumstick, a setlist, and two of Gavin's type-written messages, so I didn't feel that sorry for him.

Steve, here's the setlist from the show I saw tonight: 01. Ode to the Sun 02. Same Ol' Road 03. The Tanbark Is Hot Lava 04. Of the Room 05. Brushstroke: New Heart Shadow 06. Catch Without Arms 07. Planting Seeds 08. (new song) (A repeated phrase was "I'll never leave this place.") 09. (new song) (Repeated words included "looking for a savior" and "retaliate") 10. Triangle (with Judgement Day*) 11. Jamais Vu (with Judgement Day) 12. Eighteen People Living in Harmony (with Judgement Day) 13. Sang Real (with Judgement Day) 14. Bug Eyes 15. The Canyon Behind Her *The only guy I could ever see up there from my point of view was the curly-haired violinist with the headband. Does it bother you that I got "Catch Without Arms" while you got the "Walk in the Park" interlude instead? Since I sat and just rested myself for the first three hours inside, you got a much better view than I ever did. All I got was shoulders up of the guitarist, singer (Gavin?) and the bassist, with the occasional headshot of the drummer between people's shoulders. (I'm not gonna go to Wikipedia to look up their names and even pretend like I knew them all along.) In fact, I guess I've primarily played their records in the car, because I know very few of their song titles. Just "Brushstroke: dcbtfoabaaposba," "Same Ol' Road," "Sorry But It's Over," and "Of the Room" from El Cielo. And then "Ode to the Sun," "Bug Eyes," "Catch Without Arms," and "Matroshka" from Catch Without Arms. Those are their only song titles before today that I could identify for you if I heard the songs. I listened to those two records this afternoon while reading the lyrics and then wrote down your setlist on the back of the scrap paper I wrote the directions on. I'm really glad I read your setlist and knew not to expect "Matroshka." I'd have only set myself up for disappointment otherwise. I bought Leitmotif, myself. I didn't see any snazzy posters, except the artwork that was being raffled off, so I didn't spend any money there. I was thinking of buying a shirt, but didn't like any of the designs enough to spend money on. That's happened a lot this year at concerts. I wanna say I'm drifting from buying new ones, yet I wear band t-shirts all the time. Often, though, I don't feel like wearing any of them, though, and certain ones I don't wear much, sadly, because I'm not happy enough with the way they fit me anymore. (I'd still buy a Metallica, Brand New, or HIM t-shirt from Hot Topic, if I saw one I liked.) I waited until I got there to buy my ticket because I didn't want to give Ticketmaster any fees, especially not at a small bar like this, which I was surprised to find out runs its bigger shows through Ticketmaster. Although, since the few friends of mine that would've otherwise gladly accompanied me to Dredg tonight had work-related priorities, I had to go by myself. Dredg was well worth going by myself, thank goodness, but I'm starting to wonder if had I known I'd be going alone, perhaps I should've paid the Ticketmaster fee to have avoided 3 ungodly long hours of sitting by myself, gagging on a roomful of hipster cigarette smoke and two negligible opening acts. To pass the time, I didn't have anybody worth texting, so I played quite a bit of the 3 games that came on my phone and watched the last third (and then first third, when the DVD started over) of CB4, which wasn't even closed-captioned.

Actually, somehow I had completely ignored "Catch Without Arms" when thinking of a list of song I expected to see, despite it being my second most played song of theirs overall, the force-fed second single on my chart, and being the title of the freaking record. So I guess it couldn't have bothered me that much.
I'm horrible with song titles myself. I knew "Same Ol' Road" and "The Canyon Behind Her", actually correctly guessing those to be the opening and closing songs. I was familiar by sound with the rest of the CD, just not by title. As for the latest record, "Bug Eyes", "Ode To The Sun", and "Sang Real" all made my chart, so I knew those. "Sang Real" caught my attention early on in my ownership of the album due to its similarity to the theme song of the Mega Man 3 Nintendo game. Several of the rest have the title in the lyrics that I'd catch up upon, and "Matroshka" as well was easily remembered from being the first time I've ever seen that word of Russian origin spelled out in English.

Approximate Mudvayne setlist (the closer to the middle it is, the less sure I am about the order):
01. Not Falling 02. Silenced 03. -1 04. Death Blooms 05. Do What You Do 06. Fall Into Sleep 07. Cradle 08. World So Cold 09. Nothing to Gein 10. Prod 11. Happy? 12. Dig
They were slated to play an hour and a half, but they played less than 1:10. No encore. My best friend at work said that's pretty much how it went last time. Set cut short, no encore. No "Forget to Remember," no "f***ing Determined," one song from the new record. Too many from the "first" record. I understand that that's the record most Mudvayne fans love, but I don't understand why. There's not really a whole lot of memorable songs on there whatsoever. I hadn't listened to it in over 5 years until this morning. I'd give it a 3/5 now as opposed to a 2.5 back then.

I saw Oasis earlier today (yesterday?) in LA at Staples Center, which was awesome. Will probably be seeing the All-American Rejects again on Monday.

Scott Weiland's set list from the other night, more for my own benefit than anyone else's:
1. Reel Around the Fountain (Smiths cover) (figured it out later) 2. Killing Me Sweetly (figured it out later) 3. Paralysis (announced the title, and that it would be the second single) 4. Mockingbird Girl 5. Big Black Monster (most likely, as the only recent set list online is from Massachusetts a couple weeks ago and they were virtually identical. Wasn't 100% sold when I tried to confirm, but it was probably this.) 6. Waitin’ for a Superman (Flaming Lips cover) (figured it out later) 7. Blind Confusion (figured it out later) 8. Interstate Love Song 9. Blister on My Soul (see song #5. If this was indeed one of the ones that was "recorded by Steve Albini" then this was it.) 10. Barbarella 11. Beautiful Day (figured it out later) 12. Missing Cleveland

2009 will probably be the first time I attend a Warped Tour. The lineup is supposed to just have one stage but it looks like a fairly solid set of bands that were confirmed for the sets. Besides, why would I miss Thrice when they're coming to my city again.

Holy hell, is this year shaping up to be an amazing year for concerts. (Ironically, none of said amazing shows are coming to my place of business, so the pocketbook will be strained a bit.)
.......Holy f***ing Jesus, I just noticed that Shiny Toy Guns are an opening band on our brand new All-American Rejects date. I just lost my f***ing mind. (And to top it all off, as I am typing this sentence, an old version of "Don't Cry Out" shuffles into my speakers, out of 13,689 possible items, a mere 16 of which are STG songs. Knock me over with a feather.)
Last week I saw Avenged Sevenfold and then Bleeding Through.
March Winds of Plague Cold
April Avenged Sevenfold (possibly) Pennywise Chris Cornell Shiny Toy Guns
May As I Lay Dying
June Rancid (& Rise Against)
July No Doubt & Paramore (the reason for typing up this list to keep track of them all) Marilyn Manson, Slayer, Bullet for My Valentine, et al. Reverend Horton Heat Coldplay
August Warped Tour (Bad Religion, NOFX, Thrice, et al.)

The bands I'd be interested in (assuming they played the Chicago date): 3OH!3 Bad Religion Innerpartysystem Saosin The Ataris Thrice Underoath I dunno, not a very good one for me so far. They finally moved Lollapalooza away from the weekend of Warped, and... I'll be in Orlando that weekend. Figures. They're coming my way on July 11th. I really want to go. Meanwhile, I'm crossing my fingers that Mikel of the Airborne Toxic Event gets over his laryngitis before their show here this Saturday.

I get to see Modest Mouse for the first time on Wednesday.
I'll have to go all the way to Houston to get to see my first Depeche Mode concert. That'll be August 30th, I believe.
I realize the likes of Shiny Toy Guns, DEP, Silversun Pickups and the like are scheduled for the main SXSW shows, but I don't believe I'll attend. The badges required are just insane in the price, though I'd admittedly understand the point of it being "worth it."

Airborne set list from last night (7pm show): (Yeah, I'm that good.) Actually, one of "[Goodbye] Horses", "Letter to Georgia", and "[This] Nowhere" didn't get played. I don't know enough about the songs to know which one. And then their encore was "Does This Mean You're Moving On?" and another song I forget.

That's so weird that there are little notes by each song for their techs (themselves?) for between-song tuning changes. I've never seen that on a setlist before.
Oh yeah, P.S. - I'm gonna be monetarily strained yet again because a NIN/Jane's Addiction (original lineup) date was recently confirmed for my city.

Modest Mouse set last night:
3rd Planet We’ve Got Everything Black Cadillacs Here It Comes Fire It Up The View Alone Down There King Rat* (7" single in '07. I actually have this but will need the turntable to properly play.) Baby Blue Sedan Whale Song* (Premiered live last year) Paper Thin Walls Blame It on the Tetons Ohio Float On Doin’ the Cockroach The Good Times Are Killing Me
Sattelite Skin* (Supposedly from that EP that they've said will be released) Parting of the Sensory
*=Didn't know the actual song until I looked it up.
The set list on the Twitter site lists "Talkin' Sh*t About a Pretty Sunset" and unfortunately they didn't get to play it because of the venue's curfew. Always had been a favorite of mine. Isaac Brock poked fun at his lisp, which was cool.
Bought me a $20 t-shirt.

Aside from that, I only remember not liking "Doin' the Cockroach."

"3rd Planet," "Alone Down There" and "Paper Thin Walls" all appear on The Moon Antarctica, as tracks 1, 8 & 11, respectively.
"We've Got Everything," "Fire It Up" and "Parting" all come from We Were Dead....
"Black Cadillacs," "The View, "Blame It on the Tetons" and "The Good Times Are Killing Me" are all from Good News.
"Ohio" is from Long Drive, while "Baby Blue Sedan" is found on Building Nothing Out of Something and "Here It Comes" from Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks.

Hell yeah, Coldplay are playing here! I'll make sure to see them, in that case. I'll see VAST in Austin just a few days before that. My third time. While I'm disappointed that the album breaks the promise no Generica songs would appear on a VAST release. (Maybe not such a bad thing but there hasn't been an LP where not all the songs were previewed already this side of MFP and that bugs me.)

I have never seen an act bypass as many hits as Modest Mouse (judging by that setlist above). That'd be cool if I actually knew them better, but since I don't, I'm kind of less inclined to even want to see them.
It's looking like I'll be heading to my first Warped Tour as well, although my interest level is tepid.
Would love to see some No Doubt and Paramore, and even that Bedouin Soundclash with 'em. I don't think they're a big enough deal to top my 2007 Tool show as most I've ever paid for a concert though. Especially with everyone else that's playing this spring/summer and probably will be playing in the fall to the end of the year.
God damn I want to see some Coldplay.

Looks like Steve's trying to be like all those people at Pulse who listen to the same songs 100 times a day. I don't think it's allowed to be Coldplay though; it's gotta be a song by Pink or Beyonce.

Update: Yeah, they're a s*** band, but the sold-out Hollywood Undead show wasn't nearly as rowdy and stressful as I was expecting. At least not where I was stationed, at one of two access points to the downstairs 21+ section. However, my friend, who was the primary doorman that night, struggled to keep track of who all had been kicked out of the club, there were so many. I only saw 2-3 kicked out on my side of the house, at most, so I don't get it. At least a couple of people got arrested, including one who took a swing at a cop outside. I was in my friend's hallway at the beginning of the night until I got sent inside the house after outside access to the other hallway was cut off, so I'm kinda sorry I missed all the excitement, not to mention the several kids who needed medical attention. Sure, HU is capable of creating disposable, catchy songs, and they have a somewhat original look and sound (at least for this generation), but with so many ignorant, I.Q.-lowering lyrics, they're scarcely worth the time. (Their final song, which Jed the Fish played on Out of Order weeks ago for some reason, despite obviously hating the band, is so catchy it got stuck in my head, though. ) Senses Fail were better than expected. In the car that morning, I listened to 2/3 of their one album I own, Let It Enfold You. I bought it used 4 years ago, but it's one I never familiarized myself with. Considering I liked it less than I did when I got it, I'm pretty sure I'll eventually just make a copy of it and sell it off (if it's even still worth anything.) Haste the Day were mediocre as expected. Brokencyde were horrendous as expected. They really are the worst "rock" band I've ever heard. From what my production buddy told me that night, the other 3 bands (yes, even HU) can't stand them and personally think they're dicks. 2 of the guys in the band and their tour manager came from backstage, trying to walk through my 21+ section to get to the other side of the building where the merch was being sold. The only problem was, the tour manager and one of the band guys had their tour laminates, but (and I had to look this up on MySpace) "Antz," who is in charge of, and I quote: "Lights!!!/Fog/DMX" (DMX512-A, which according to Wikipedia, is "a communications protocol that is most commonly used to control stage lighting and effects), was not wearing his tour laminate, nor did he have the 21+ stamp of a patron on his hand. I knew he was a part of their crew, but because of that (and more importantly, because I got written up over a similar situation 4 days prior), I refused to let him through. The other two guys repeatedly insisted to me that I just saw him onstage earlier, to which I countered with A) I did not, because I was not inside the house while they performed and B) even if I had been, he wasn't wearing the proper credentials, not only to pass through himself, but even the sticker pass to allow them to escort him through anyway and that rules are rules. Since either Haste the Day or Senses Fail was performing at the time, I'm not sure how much they actually heard of part B of the answer, but nevertheless, my assistant supervisor happened to walk by while we were talking, so I handed them all off to him and he escorted all three of them through. That afternoon, while we were setting up for the show, there was a purple t-shirt slung over one of the portable guardrails (bikeracks) we use, which probably belonged to one of the bands and Brokencyde, if anybody. I didn't pay it any mind, but the next night when I went in to work, it was laying inside the employee vestibule, with $20 written on a piece of bright blue duct tape taped onto it. It says "Crunk Kids" on it a couple of times, over a splatter of pink and several pairs of Kanye-style shutter shades on it, but doesn't say anything about Brokencyde on it anywhere. I wasn't sure what it had to do with them, but clearly it was one of their display t-shirts. I adopted it as a goof and took it home. From what I can tell "Crunk Kids" looks like it's the name of their fan club, but I couldn't find anything definitive. If it said "Brokencyde" on it I wouldn't have taken it. Few actually know that Crunk Kids would even refer to them, but nevertheless the colors and design alone make it a t-shirt I wouldn't be caught dead wearing in public. To Brokencyde, the "crunk kids" aesthetic (fashion-wise and musically) is ironic. To their fans, it's post-ironic, since it expresses their appreciation (horribly misguided as it is) of Brokencyde's music. For me, that t-shirt is either two isolated expressions of irony, or it's so far beyond irony that it's gone past post-irony and is back to irony again. Either way, I'd literally never wear it outside my front door, more so because I despise clothes new bands put out with anything neon/day-glo/all-over print/pop-core associated/or written in Garbage Pail Kids/Toxic Avenger fonts. Or any combination thereof.

And I think me distinguishing between any of those fashion traits in the second-to-last sentence would be a total lost cause. Anyway, that Korn/A7X/The Used tour that's coming around the corner was some more good news on the upcoming concert front.

Brokencyde were horrendous as expected. They really are the worst "rock" band I've ever heard. Agreed. Luckily I've heard only about three songs from them, but those were more than enough. Did they play that song where they scream about cutting pigs, complete with their ridiculous pig noise imitations?

Wow, I'll try interpreting that philosophical irony theorem part once I've been sober for at least 24 hours! In Ghost World, Thora Birch's and Scarlett Johansson's characters are watching a band: Scarlett: This is so bad it's almost good. Thora: This is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again. And I think me distinguishing between any of those fashion traits in the second-to-last sentence would be a total lost cause. I'll put it this way. Just set foot in a Hot Topic. I haven't in almost a year now, but think about the kind of t-shirts bands like 3OH!3, Boys Like Girls, We the Kings, Cobra Starship, Metro Station, All Time Low, The White Tie Affair, Brokencyde, I Set My Friends on Fire, etc., or any upstart metalcore/deathcore bands of the past couple of years and don't take themselves seriously would have for sale up on the walls. That Korn/A7X/The Used tour that's coming around the corner... Come again? (Oh. It looks like that's just a one-off date for Detroit. (With Eighteen Visions' James Hart's mediocre new band Burn Halo opening.)) Did they play that song where they scream about cutting pigs, complete with their ridiculous pig noise imitations? Yes. That song, "Freaxxx," and that song they do where they count to six and then say "suck my dick" are all going into the Top 5 of 2009's worst songs of the year. It doesn't matter that only one of them was an actual single and that it was from 2008.

That song may be the epitome of "hilariously awful" for me. The song, of course, is absolutely appalling, and anyone who seriously, truly likes it should be shot on sight. But I think what did it for me was hearing the song for the first time while watching the video. They want to look like badasses, but it's clear they had a really low budget (most of which they spilled into Marshall's print ad model fees, one-day Jaguar/Hummer rental, and those ridiculous background effects that show the lyrics on-screen as the lead singer is grinding on said Marshall's model). Add in the pouring-out of a fake 40, and the fact that the whole thing looks like it was shot in the driveway of an Albuquerque farm... and this is before I even go into the pig. (I wonder if he was slaughtered in "Bree Bree?" ) I can't hate something like that... such a perfect-storm train-wreck has to be admired.

Oh, I knew exactly what type of image you're talking about, and yes, it's hideous (I especially can't stand the "all over print" where the words comprising the bands' names are too long to fit so it starts a new line of text in mid-word). I was just surprised that somebody actually took the time to come up with specific titles for all those 'trends' and that anyone could possibly figure the difference between the Garbage Pail Kids font and the Toxic Avenger font, etc. And from what I know about Brokencyde, if they are responsible for a single item of apparel that doesn't include all of the above fashion traits, I would have bought ten copies of Brokencyde's record and distributed it to people I know so that they could ridicule me while under the impression that I think it's good music.
