In case anyone hasn't seen it over on Pulse, we're doing the Pulse Decade Awards, honoring the past 10 years in music. pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pdaI'd like to see if there's any way possible for us to form a general consensus in several of the categories and see if we can't push a few of them through, like we tried with Shiny Toy Guns at the last Pulse Music Awards. But the important thing is that we need to put forth nominations. They close on the 22nd, so there's still time to really think about what you want to nominate. Let's get at it!

Actually getting a field of good selections would be a feat, considering some of the obstacles being faced. For example: Song of the Decade Womanizer Riight... can't beat lyrics that repeat the title ad nauseum Songwriter of the DecadeStacy Ferguson (Fergie) This speaks for itself. Quite a few submissions of Carrie Underwood as the artist of the decade, even though she failed to release anything its entire first half... And I'll quit with music examples, because it's easy enough to find plenty of similar in the other fields. However, perhaps the most eyebrow-raising read for me was earlier today, when I decided to try a few of the Miscellaneous Field categories and found out what Pulse posters consider to be the biggest scandals in the news this decade: Biggest Scandal (News) Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" Michael Jackson's death Anna Nicole Smith's death Whitney's crack addiction Britney going crazy As with all Pulse awards, these should prove veddy eeenteresting.

I'd been planning on making this very thread (and suggesting the same thing), so thanks for taking care of that Matt. Quite a few submissions of Carrie Underwood as the artist of the decade, even though she failed to release anything its entire first half... And Lady Gaga, who was dormant for the first nine-tenths of the decade. It's kinda irritating how little thought some people are putting into their lists. These aren't necessarily my favorites of the decade, but they're all ones I like a lot and know others of you do too. Hopefully we can use this list to generate some artist/album/song ideas. Stars denote my votes on which albums to mass-nominate (obviously we wouldn't pick all of them or even all the starred ones). From what I can tell, anyone can nominate as many titles as they want this round, and then the next round we vote for 5 or 10 finalists or whatever. So I don't think we have to decide on a consensus just yet. We just have to post our nominations in the topic.

I'm sure at least a couple of you already know this, but I submitted all my nominations in most of the music categories so far (and don't really care too much about the non-musical ones).
EDIT: Oh, on a related note, I am well underway on my Top 200 Songs/100 Singles of the decade. Good thing I started on it in June or July. I've lopped off a couple hundred songs or so and am down to the remaining 109. Very surprised at how much is still left from 3 particular bands. Especially how many songs the top band still has left, but also how many more they have than the other two biggest bands.

I'll get rolling on this as well. I was actually getting ready to start working on my decade lists (and probably a corresponding countdown/time capsule show), so these two events could go hand and hand.

If I'm understanding these rules correctly, after everything is submitted, it's up to "the committee" (the five people who moderate that forum) to sort through our submissions and then decide amongst themselves what the actual field of nominees will be. I'm not sure how this works, since most of the members of said committee have been posting their own submissions anyway, but we'll see how it goes.
I think for now, we throw s*** at the wall and see what sticks, and then, once the actual nominees are announced, we can try to form a cabal for the promotion of good candidates, assuming there are some.

I'm a little nervous about this "committee" if one of them is nominating "U + Ur Hand" for one of the Best Rock Performance categories. But I'm working on this anyway. Doesn't mean we won't be able to rain on somebody's parade.

I'm sure it wouldn't have made much difference, but I'm sorry I didn't get in any album tracks or dance/electronic nominations.
So who do we like, as far as winners go?

Let's see what we have as choices. I have a feeling a lot of what we could agree upon as great submissions will get axed.
On a related note, on general principle, I'm going to be mad when the female rock category ends up with entries from Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, and Mariah Carey. (Seriously. All submitted.)

I don't think anything's been officially announced yet. I think most of those are just Pulse's (the poster's) crappy submissions. He's not one of the officials for this thing. Those are erfrank, me5671, Music Fan, hitseeker, and Overloaded Breast.
Hopefully somebody will update soon on exactly what happens next, since submissions are supposedly closed.

I deleted my post before noticing you had replied.
Yeah, I finally figured out that "Pulse," with the snazzy official-looking avatar, was not actually listing off the official nominees. My bad. I went ahead and put in my dance/electronica and album track submissions, though. Can't hurt and I'm not the only one posting nominations late.

Yeah, I managed to sneak into the Rock/Alternative thread before everything locked. Figures I'd procrastinate until the day after the nomination period ended, but I guess it's too hard for me to come up with my own suggestions for these things, especially when most of them probably were already suggested by others.

So do we wanna come up with a masterlist of nominees we can all get behind for this thing or not? I'd be fine with that. Haven't done anything with these lists yet, but it looks like we have until Monday. I guess, if not this round, we'll still have the next phase to try and find something worthwhile amidst whatever crap ends up on the official nominee lists.

I never got any feedback on attempting to stack the deck for this round besides from Andrew, so I went ahead and knocked out a bunch of categories on my own. The idea was I'd come back here when I was done and see if anybody wanted to stuff the box with me, or at least suggest alternates that all of us could get behind. Anyway, I got through the major music ones:
Country R&B Rap/Hip Hop Pop Dance Rock/Alternative (didn't care about Latin) General
Unfortunately, and with a day off no less, I didn't even remember to finish off Multimedia, Television, or Film today until 10 minutes to midnight. And that was midnight CENTRAL standard time. So I sent erfrank what I had (above) and asked if he would slip my votes in, since I forgot about the time zone factor and had already spent so much time on the 7 categories I had gotten to.
And you know what jogged my memory at 10 to midnight? I was listening to Dredg's The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion, in the definitive album-ranking order. And when "Ireland" was on deck, I remembered that someone had nominated it for Best Album Cut. (I didn't vote for it, for the record. Or "Cities of Night." Sorry guys. There were 10 songs I wanted to see on the final list more than "CoN." 2 of which I didn't even nominate. The other 7 I had submitted were duplicate artists.)
I was trying to do all you guys proud, anyway, for what it's worth, voting mostly for my own personal preference, of course, trying to be realistic about a nominee's impact and relevance on this decade, but often for stuff that was widely acclaimed that we could all get behind, too. Had to make some painful cuts along the way.

I was going to try to make an official list of endorsements, and actually started. I made it through about two categories before realizing there's just way too many songs to recommend only 10 for all of us. And for the ones that we need to make right, I trust the judgment of everyone here and held out hope that not having a list to read off wouldn't deter anyone from at least sending in something. I generally went for personal preference and gave the benefit of the doubt to SMB nominations if I had any left over. I started at the beginning, thinking I'd just pick a few categories and about 4½ hours later ( ), I had something in just about ALL of them. I maxed out with 10 picks for probably 95% of them. I didn't bother with any actors/actresses (because I generally don't care) and didn't pick any movies because I wasn't too big on very much of their list. My TV selections were minimal because I'm just not too big on TV anymore. I skipped Latin too. Everything else though, I'm in. I wish I could have done better with Country; those are generally the only ones I ended up with less than 10. I probably know 3 out of every four of those songs; I just know the songs, not artists and titles of songs. And I refrained from nominating anything Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, because while I like those artists, I didn't wish to just look like some pop-head going through cherry-picking their crossover/American Idol hits. I did however pick Taylor for Best Songwriter in the midst of mostly rockers though. And it was about 6 hours late, but given that they even re-opened the initial stage after it had closed for people to submit more, I'm not all that nervous about me or Nick being rejected. And I noted that 151 pages is A LOT to cover. For the finals, we will get together and raise some hell.

Well I wad PM'd back by erfrank saying no worries, your picks will be included. So that's good, although if anything it'd make me feel totally guilty if I had to call out this panel if they make choices like "Fighter" for best rock song in lieu of better judgment.
But then again, my own list had Blaqk Audio for artist of the decade. And that is admittedly outrageous, but mainly comes out of spite for whoever decided to call them "Blaqk Radio" right there on the very first page. I mean, what is that? It's not like anyone nominated them that way. Somebody had to have changed it themselves, and changed it several times, even though they eventually got it right in the dance/electronica section. Once.
But as the list went on, I found myself taking it more and more seriously, even though it was far from being the only errant naming/spelling on the list.

I've had some insomnia spells the past couple nights, so I ended up doing mine between 9:00 P.M. EST 15 Nov - 5:00 A.M. EST 16 Nov... had I been on a more normal schedule, I'd probably have been in around the same time as everyone else. And yeah, some of those "rock" entries are ridiculous.

Well the final nominees list has been released. Generally, I'm disappointed at what I see, but the list doesn't lack big, glaring names that we can get behind, and others we could push aside. I've got a few hours to burn (I hate this time of year!), so I'm going to analyze these and maybe we can jump the gun on this a little so we're not all waiting to the last minute again.

Generally, I'm disappointed at what I see Ditto. I tried to do some sorting through this while watching the game. I uploaded a spreadsheet to Google Docs where I went through and did my personal opinions of the best options (blue text), other viable options (black text), and pretty bad options (red text). I thought it might be an easy way to go through and work on establishing consensus if y'all wanted to work with this (slightly) more organized than the post on the forum and use the columns next to the titles to express your own opinions (which options you think are best or worst or whatever you want to comment on). If that helps: spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Am4dqesjibn4dFFIaWZJelpreFVWTUZWSVZ3WVVCSlE&hl=en ... it should be editable without having to log in or anything. If not, I'm fine with just hashing it out here too.

When I was working on it earlier, I had mine sorted out just the same, with the top choices (in order of preferences, usually top 3), also-rans, and picks to avoid at all costs. Then my post was literally eaten by the message box, which turned black, and couldn't be recovered. Seems to happen only with the longest, most effortful posts. Anyway, I generally had these rules of thumb to follow: 1. Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and Mariah Carey merit no support under any circumstance. 2. Coldplay is likely to make a killing off pop-default voters. I'd like to limit them to the Pop categories. 3. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Pink have enough lambs supporting them as it stands, and therefore, even though they might seem like the best choice at times, I'd prefer to vote for them only as a last resort. 4. I am totally willing to compromise on any of these.
