First of all, I knew that Maxi had a guest on this song, but I'd since forgotten it was Shaggy.
Secondly, I became consciously aware of the classic "Green Onions" by Booker T. & the MGs somewhere between 1996-2000, 2000 being the year (if I recall correctly) that I learned the artist and song title. (It is an instrumental, after all.) Or maybe I learned the title/artist somewhere along the way (say, 1998) and later learned in 2000 how important a band Booker T. & the MGs were.
Thirdly, at any rate when I legally downloaded (for free) "That Girl" the other day (I try to only legally download stuff I'd expect a royal pain to find otherwise), I realized that I hadn't heard the song in probably a decade or more. If I had I totally would've known that "That Girl" is built on a sample of "Green Onions."
Lastly, sampling "Green Onions." That's so brilliant it had already been done before it just now dawned on me how good an idea that is.

I used to love this song back in the day. The pair are among my favorite artists of Jamaican descent. I wonder where Maxi Priest disappeared to. I have Priest's "Close To You" on my iPhone.
