Even in Pulse's Alternative/Rock forum, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of activity these days.
I'm more than willing to discuss music, but there's little there or here for me to weigh in on and I'm barely able to keep up with researching new singles & videos (like I even have time to seek out any videos online) on my usual sites, let alone feel passionate enough about a song or anything one way or the other to start a topic that would generate much interest. (The stuff I like I display in my Top 40, but I haven't found any time where I can update those for any of you guys' benefit in over a couple of months now.) Yet I still manage to stop by here and Pulse every day.
Just thought I'd get this off my chest...

It seems like it's been that way for the past several months. I've actually intended recently to talk about some of the recent singles but never got around to doing it. I may try again. This doesn't seem like a particular time of the year when new music is talked about much though, so it could be that.

I remember on R and R's Alternative forum, in the very beginning when I was pretty much a pop fan with a budding interest in rock music, and I didn't feel right participating on that board. The ones in control of that board's content were people like grungeboy, exknddlistener, and RockTheGlobe, who were all seemingly on a seek-and-destroy mission against anything with a hint of commercialism.
Now it feels like that board has come semi-circle (as opposed to full-circle). The others there do dedicate more time to keeping up with the new material, but they exercise that ability by salivating over bands that I wouldn't even care about if I did have the time.
But it's like that on the charts, too. I haven't gone on a music downloading spree since October, then I tried to the other day, starting with any song that's made the charts since then that I'd be interested in. There were none.
Either music is simply becoming progressively mediocre, or I'm just getting old.

But even those "newbies" don't seem like they're posting that much anymore. It's kind of strange, but in the two nights since I posted this, it seems like there's been more activity here than in the past two weeks. And you and Kirk are the only two that replied to this.

Sorry to make the rant, but 2008 has been the most mediocre year I can remember in quite some time. I took an attempt to do a personal chart and could barely get past a top ten. Not much of the great songs are on the charts, and maybe I'm not digging deep enough on what's not but didn't pick up much interesting there, either. I'm really sick of Warped/Myspace bands and when they get the praise I'm sure it won't do much for me.
I mean, sales are going down, but Jonas Brothers albums are a big fuss and what people are buying. That's sad. I don't think I'd even go for digital song downloads if I thought that was the best that I could do. You have to wait for the fall for anything interesting because the labels are scared to do otherwise.
I guess I at least remembered liking the singles out (in general) from '04-'07 considerably more, for example. 2003 had good stuff but the bad stuff probably had me digging into the indie and older stuff as I got a chance to hear more of it. But at least there was interesting enough of songs for me to have a fifty-position chart then. I'll still look forward to something new, too.

Yeah, I agree somewhat. I too tried restarting my personal chart, but not being able to fill out 40 positions in one sitting. And the majority of songs I did put down seemed to be pop/hot AC.
I guess I find myself less interested in alternative rock this year than in years past. It just seems like a slew of new acts came across my radar, and except for a scant few, I either couldn't tell one from another, or couldn't care enough to do so. My satellite radio caused me to more or less abandon terrestrial radio, but when I started listening to KNDD more often recently, hearing "I'm Not Over" by Carolina Liar all the time just seemed to evoke indifference from me. I mean, I think it's a good song, but it jarred me to see it in the top 5 because there's nothing that makes it special or stand out. Santogold, and maybe the Ting Tings, have been the only new, breakout acts this year that seemed to grab my attention.
You know, I really wish I still continued my chart instead of letting it lapse and never getting around to restarting it. After doing it for better part of six years, I wonder what the causal relationship was between it and my interest in current music; did stopping it cause me to lose focus on what's out there, or did the fact that new music got less interesting frustrate my efforts to keep doing it every week? It's probably a little of both. Plus, I've noticed I've spent comparatively little time listening to music since I've moved into the dorms - I blame it mostly on not having a second power strip and having to timeshare one outlet between my stereo and satellite radio and my alarm clock and roommate's phone charger. Plus, my computer can't access the internet from my room, and even if it could, I think it's about to die of old age in the very near future.
Plus, I think I've been pushing newer music aside for older music. I've immersed myself into new wave music over the last year-plus, and now I seem to be focusing on 80's and 90's pop music. Listening to flashback countdowns from those decades just seem to get me excited for whatever reason. I sometimes plan my schedule around listening to the shows Sirius has on their 80's and 90's channels, and actually felt a little bad about turning off this week's episode from 1986, so I could watch the Yankee game (which itself has become a rare treat for me, ironically, thanks to the University's cable system).
So, yeah, Kirk, you're not the only one longing to be excited about the current music scene. But I think it'll come around soon, and when it does, hopefully I'll be able to fully appreciate it.

I'd say that even the best years of this decade lack the diversity of good music that other years in other decades have had. Just my opinion, of course, but it seems lately, if we're getting strong R&B albums, then all of the pop albums are suffering, or, if we're getting good rock albums, then the country (or "country" as it's mainly been lately) is sucking hard. So even my good years in the 2000s (that have a lot of albums purchased) look pretty one-sided as far as what type of albums they are.

Just the Pop chart in particular for me is really blah this year, overall. I remember how much more exciting AT40 was to listen to even one year ago, as opposed to now. I still listen to it and look forward to it every week, but it often blows right by me, because I don't find myself stopping what I'm otherwise doing to fully soak in nearly as many songs I enjoy. Because there aren't that many. I mean, here's the chart from one year ago:
And here's this past week:
I mean, get out of my face! 2007 kicks the absolute s*** out of 2008.

I'll even put 2007 1 year ago over the comparable chart from 2006. Hands down.

Other years have this year in music on a choke chain. The story of the year is that there have been very few bands releasing albums that I have a strong interest in, and bands with whom I'm moderately interested have left a lot to be desired.
I'm just going down the chart right now and it's full of it.
Weezer can do better. Rise Against can do better. The Killers' comeback was a disappointment. As is Oasis'. Why did they finally decide Theory of a Deadman was worth playing. Why does the planet have a disease where they can't see that Saving Abel is dogs***. Beck's been a letdown for quite some time now. Snow Patrol's new one just isn't as gangster as "Run" and "Chasing Cars".
The pop chart has had its moments this year, but nothing like the past couple years, and lets face it: Everything's getting owned right now by a single off an album that's had seven other singles picked before it.
Plus It seems like music is just a blip on the radar to me right now with everything I'd been going through. Normally I have my music and my sports to alleviate things like that, but personally, now isn't really a good time for either.
