So, today I bought the album at Target which has an additional bonus track. My first impression? It's not as good as American Idiot would have me believe, but much better than oscillations. would lead me to think.
The heavy songs aren't what they used to be. They aren't really bad by any means, but they lack any real hook, or the type of ambition that used to make those songs stand out so well. I used to always think of them as standout-ish, but not so much here.
Unfortunately, the bonus track "Zeitgeist" shows another disappointing aspect of the album: Not enough acoustic tracks. Billy was at times genius at these types of songs. It's generally what he succeeds at most, and would be a welcome variety on the album. I mean, "To Sheila" from Adore was beautiful as most of the album was.
That being said, there's a few songs that were pretty good and may even grow on me. Actually, hearing "Tarantula" in the context has made it an improved listen. I actuallly like the second half of the album more than the first. It's got more of the later-era artistic stuff, and I was kind of hoping that if there was another Pumpkins record there'd at least be some sort of continuation of the route.
My favorite songs so far are "United States" and the heavenly sounding "Pomp and Circumstance." Surpisingly though, sometimes the politics seem more personal on the record, which I think works, though I've been more of a fan of Billy's lyrically obscure and sentimental work.
LOL, it looks like the current lineup is once again essentially a tour one. The credits? "Drums: Jimmy Chamberlin. Billy Corgan: All the rest." There's a couple of really cool pictures inside the booklet though. If I were the borderline Corganite I were a couple to a few years ago, I'd probably consider getting the SP heart logo tattooed on one of my upper arms.
If it interests anyone I could upload this one. I'd also put up the other stuff I have still on my hard drive: Pisces Iscariot, "1979" single, Adore and Machina.
