After hearing it a couple times at Taco Bell, I finally gave it a good listen on their Myspace. I can't believe they sampled this for "X Amount of Words." I assumed that "I can't believe" line was recorded for the song. I mean, sampling your own songs? I dunno...
Anyway, I wouldn't have minded hearing this a few times back in '03. It's not too much different from the current material lyrically. The music isn't anything I haven't heard before, but that's OK. As I recall, it was their first song to chart on alternative, making what was essentially a cameo appearance peaking at #47.

As for sampling your own tracks: You wouldn't believe how often that happens in hip-hop tracks, literally. And sometimes it's in the same album.
I like this one. A nice song, if not special. I like it more than "Hate Me" but not as much as the other two singles.

Two examples of sampling yourself come to mind.
The Fugees' "The Score" samples a line from seemingly every original song on The Score.
The main line of Mike Jones' "Back Then" (his second national single) is sampled from his own first single, "Still Tippin'."

I love it, but was fully expecting to never hear from this band again. Definitely wouldn't have thought they'd come back 3 years later and hit big.

Def Leppard sampled "Gods of War" in "Rocket" (albeit subtly), both off the same album.
