Sirius' new '90s alternative channel has just been in an absolute groove for the last three hours, so I'll comment on a few songs I've heard.
Alice In Chains - I Stay Away
Perhaps one of the more underrated songs by them, and I think it's easily one of my favorites by them (although, like with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, that's somewhat qualified by removing the songs I'm burnt out on). I love how grandiose it gets, especially at the end. I remember catching part of the video for this on an rerun of Beavis and Butthead and being impressed with the trippy claymation, though I don't remember anything from it.
Days of the New - Touch, Peel, and Stand
I know, this is often detracted as inspiring the post-grunge retread we get today. I don't care. I've always liked this song. I remember this was a staple of K-Rock's gold playlist for a couple years. While I was probably somewhat cool towards the song at the time, I guess reminiscence is what has made me fond of the song. But Travis Meeks' vocals against the nearly empty instrumentals creating such a resonating effect. Really what sets it apart from others I've heard from them.
(By the way, I just looked these guys up on Wikipedia, and to my astonishment, I saw Nicole Scherzinger's article linked in the band's infobox. Curious, I checked her article out, and it turns out she contributed vocals to their second album. Go figure.)
Temple of the Dog - Say Hello 2 Heaven
Interestingly, "Reach Down" is on the radio (and has been for literally the last ten minutes) as I type this. I know "Hunger Strike" is the big one by them, and I have my reasons for loving that, but while this gets it's occasional play on alt stations, it definitely doesn't get as much cred as it deserves. Just another great vocal performance by Cornell and the moody music in the verses complemented by the harmonies in the choruses are sublime.
Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise
It's one of those songs I always confuse with about two or three other singles from Siva and Siamese Dream and can never remember the names of any of them. But this is easily the lushest of those songs. The guitar work on here is just tremendous. And Corgan's vocals are just so powerful.
Ugh, I'm too tired to add any more. I will just say that it is a de facto grunge channel (they named it after a Nirvana song for cryin' out loud), but not everything is, of course. And they need to not play songs that came out in the 2000s. It seems rare so far, but it makes whoever's programming it look really bad.
