Well, I mainly dedicate this topic to their third album, ...And Out Come the Wolves. I just recently got around to hearing it, and I am amazed to say the least. My first album exposure to the band was in '04 when I heard Indestructible and thought that one was pretty good. I wasn't really expecting to like another album by them more than that one, which I liked very much. A year later down the road, my friend gave me his Xbox which included Let's Go on it, so that became the second Rancid album I was familiar with. And recently, on cdzinc.com, I acquired the first album and AOCTW.
But I see why that's commonly regarded as the group's best album. It is my favorite, and if you ask me, the ska sound kind of enhanced the band sonically. There are 19 tracks and they all are great, none that are just there or filler. After knowing who they ARE and hearing them, I finally have appreciated the group more than I ever have before.

F**kin' A, then, man! The first I'd heard of them was in early '95, when "Salvation" was a buzz clip on MTV. Then I saw the "Nihilism" video via Beavis and Butt-head watching it. The camera zooms in on Lars and Tim, both of whom are wearing what they usually wear and had gigantic mohawks and Butt-head scoffed: "Honor students." It was the one video where Beavis finally stood up for himself and kicked Butt-head in the crotch. "Time Bomb" was a buzz clip too, but I didn't really like it like I did "Salvation." I enjoyed "Ruby Soho" alright, and heard "Roots Radicals" and "Olympia, WA" on KPNT, but not very often. Then in the summer of 1998, I heard "Bloodclot" on the radio and saw its video on MTV. I was blown away. Lars had never really sung lead on a Rancid single before, and no disrespect to Tim, but I learned I love Lars' vocals. The video was what sold them to me, finally. Just 4 badass punx hanging out in a junkyard or something. Anyway, I didn't want to buy Life Won't Wait first, because I didn't want to come off like a poseur (this was a big deal, socially, back in junior and high school). Instead I went back and bought "Let's Go," because that was the album whose singles I was introduced to them on, and I preferred "Salvation" at the time, to any of the Wolves singles. On marching band trips that fall (I was in the drumline) a couple friends owned Life Won't Wait and Wolves. I listened to LWW through a split headphone jack and loved it from start to finish. I borrowed Wolves from one of 'em and loved it almost as much. I taped both albums off my friends so I could play them in my car until I got around to buying them. But before I did that, I wanted to get the first album. I ended up getting LWW for Christmas that year, and bought Wolves the next day with Christmas money. I dressed as Lars for Halloween that fall, printing as many different angled pictures of him as I could and then painstakingly hand-replicating all his tattoo sleeves with markers, using the bathroom mirror and both hands (obviously). I just about cried when they washed off the next day in the shower. I've been a diehard Rancid/Bastards/Transplants, etc. fan ever since. The only record I don't have, oddly enough, is the Operation Ivy record. No, I don't know what the hell I'm waiting for. I guess I'll go ahead and rank their singles that I'm aware of. 01. Bloodclot A+ ( Life Won't Wait, #1) 02. Roots Radicals A+ (CD single, 1995, later found on ...And Out Come the Wolves) 03. Olympia, WA A+ (AOCTW, #3; at least on KPNT's nightly specialty program, this is how it was used) 04. Who Would've Thought A+ (LWW, #3) 05. Hooligans A+ (LWW, #2) 06. Fall Back Down A+ ( Indestructible, #1) 07. Ruby Soho A (AOCTW, #2) 08. Salvation A ( Let's Go, #2) 09. Red Hot Moon A (I, #2) 10. Let Me Go A ( Rancid (V), #1) 11. Time Bomb A (AOCTW, #1) 12. Tropical London (this one was aborted) A (I, #3) 13. Nihilism A (LG, #1) 14. Lock, Step & Gone (uncertain about this one) A (KPNT used this in specialty programming as #3.5/4, but this very well could have been an album cut) 15. Radio Havana A (R(V), #2) 16. Hyena A- ( Rancid, #1) Oh yeah, by the way, Brett Reed left the band and now Branden Steineckert, formerly of The Used, is their drummer. I can't get my head around the fact that both the drummers from two bands I love are no longer in place, let alone that one who's about my age, coming from a different sounding band, is actually the replacement for the other!

Since said post, I've gotten everything except for the debut album. I'll probably buy the authentic Op Ivy album if I find it used or when it's re-issued (I have it burned; actually something I owned before AOTCW). Actually, Let's Go really grew on me eventually, and while not as ambitious as later works, I think it may be my favorite record of theirs, but all of 'em are great. Although my favorite song is from LWW and it's not even a single: "Crane Fist." That's one song that's almost hard to sit still when I listen to it, not because it makes me anxious; it's just that neat. I think I first heard from the band sometime in '01, then heard the two big Wolves singles as golds a year later on an alternative station.
I've gotten the first Transplants record, as well. It's fine, even though I don't listen to it often.
And since the singles rankers topics have been coming back, I'll just do the ones that were knowingly singles:
01. Time Bomb: A+ 02. Roots Radicals: A 03. Bloodclot: A 04. Salvation: A 05. Who Would've Thought: A 06. Red Hot Moon: A 07. Hooligans: A 08. Nihilism: A- 09. Radio Havana: A- 10. Let Me Go: A- 11. Hyena: B+ 12. Fall Back Down: B 13. Ruby Soho: B
