I intended to make a topic for this all the way back in October when I saw NIN live, but haven't come around to it until being so nostalgia-happy lately. Anyway, what appeals to me about the song is the structure. At first it's weird and quiet, but then the drums are the first hint that of what this song will be, and there's a cool progression in it. But the distorted instruments makes it such an intense song! I remembered how crazy the downward spiral seemed to me; some moments even a bit disturbing the first time, like in this song.

Initially not one of my favorites from the record, due to the structure and the fact that the vocals don't even come in until toward the end. Having become a more mature listener long since then, I really like it. I especially like drumming along to that huge crashing drum loop. Lots of tricky syncopation to nail down consistently at first.
If you haven't already, you should track down two of the remixes on the further down the spiral EP:
eraser (polite) This strips the song down to pretty much just the lyrics. All cleanly sung, the phrases get fired off back to back twice I think, while this mild, loping synth melody plays against the vocals. It's only like, 1:17 long.
erased, over, out This is like 4 minutes of noise and distortion with this extremely slowed down scream repeating in the background. If your CD player fast forwards at a constant speed, it turns out Trent's screaming "Erase me!" about 5 times total.
I haven't listened to either of these in a few years, so if my numbers happen to be a little off, forgive me.
