So I finally got sucked into buying a 5th generation iPod a couple weeks back after using an MP3-CD player for years and it finally arrived earlier this week. I love it, but the video capabilities are such a novelty. It drains the battery like mad, and it's a pain in the ass converting existing videos into their format, not to mention the Canadian iTunes store sucks major ass.
Anyone else got sucked into the hype?

Hey, I bought something that owns any Ipod ever created. It's a MP3/CD player...it plays all of the Mp3 files that Ipod does, only better....anytime I want to listen to one of my Cd's, I just pop it in and press play! No need to kill 20 minutes of my life ripping a Cd into digital format just to play it in a stupid Ipod. Oh, and it runs on AA batteries, which I get for free at work anyway, so that's cool if you're me. Gets up to 84 hours on 2 AA batteries; I'll live with that. And the price: 30 dollars...that's like 90% off an Ipod. Bam! you've been owned.

lol... you make it sound like I never used an MP3-CD player before!
I used the iRiver SlimX one, I like it and all plus it includes lots of accessories, but I don't like carrying all my CDs around with me wherever I go (yes, I'm lazy), which was my biggest problem with it plus it was starting to malfunction, drains my batteries like no tomorrow when I play normal CDs, and it skips a lot even when I was walking to work (never mind running). I rip all my CDs on to my computer whenever I buy them anyway, so it's not a problem ripping them since I listen to music on my computer a lot of the times.

Well it wasn't exactly pointed at you...just the general public, who doesn't seem to realize the existance of the Mp3/Cd player and all its benefits.
I used to have that Rio that you and I both had. That got me about 6 hours of battery life; less in the winter. That got stolen. Darn. That thing probably had a book value of about 5 dollars by now, and I was only mad because of the CD I had in it. I have one from Panasonic now and in 3 months it has skipped a total of zero times in my car. Haven't tried using it while running, though.
And I wouldn't like carrying my CD's everywhere either, but one CD is usually sufficient to get me through the trip for anywhere I go, and in case that isn't enough, that's what the Mp3 Cd's are for.

Well Steve, I don't get free AA batteries, and with an iPod you don't have to waste time burning downloaded songs onto a CD. I used to have a CD discman for about 5 years that served me well, but it got lost in Canada, and for my birthday this year my Dad got me an iPod. Putting lost 90s tracks from 80s new wave bands on shuffle makes walking so much easier, something I try to do as much as possible of but it's not always practical, especially here in SoCal aka suburbia. But yeah, the battery sucks, all I have on it is MP3s and it doesn't even seem to be 10 hrs.

I've been really tempted by the video iPod but if the video is as crappy as you say it is, I'll probably pass.
How many hours video do you get per battery charge? I know they have the numbers on their website, but I'm talking real-world here. Also, how long would you say it takes to convert stuff?
The only big advantage I see to a video iPod is the TV-out. You can carry your video collection with you and plug it into anyone's TV. How do the video files look on a TV? I know you can go up to 480x480 resolution.

Well it's not exactly "crappy".. let's just say don't expect it to be a great video player. It's more like an excellent audio player with the video as the bonus.
You get approximately 2 hours of battery life when watching videos. Converting time for videos really depends on your processor speed. But I have to mention right off the bat, that if the audio of your video is encoded as MPEG-2, you can't just use Quicktime Pro (which is the program you normally you need to convert it) because apparently if you do, you won't get any sound. I always leave it on and walk away when converting. It takes like an hour to convert a 5 minute video. I'm using a Athlon64 3200+ by the way.
I haven't done TV-Out yet, since that requires the TV-out cable, which is an accessory and I'm too cheap to buy it.

I'm just trying to wait until there's an industry standard. I could definitely use an iPod-like device pretty bad, but I don't want to buy something I'm stuck with while technology just passes me by shortly thereafter and I'm out a few hundred bucks.

My car has an mp3/CD player, and that's enough for me right now. Holds around 130 songs, give or take, which is enough for me to put pretty much my whole personal top 100 chart, plus 10 or so songs I haven't gotten into yet, plus a few more random songs I feel like putting on there at the time I'm making the CD.

Bought a 30 gig one back in July. Of course, three months later they come out with the next-gen nanos and cut $50 off the price of the video iPods.
In addition to the 300 or so songs I've got on there now, it's great for when I miss an episode of Pardon the Interruption since I can download the podcast after it airs (assuming they don't take their sweet time uploading it to iTunes). I tried loading a 30 Seconds to Mars video on there, but for some reason it wouldn't accept it, so I still don't have any videos on there yet. I considering buying Jets highlights for the 2006 season, but at 15 minutes a game (usually less), it didn't seem worth it. It's also good if I want to show off some of my photography without carrying prints around. I just wish I could create some more playlists, since it kinda gets pedantic putting everything on shuffle all the time. Other than chart-related playlists, I've got one that's a repository for my favorite album cuts, and one that's a mix of depressing/angst-ridden songs (appropriately titled "Every Day in the Northwest").

The thing I like the most about iTunes is the smart playlist, it makes different combinations of playlists so much easier.

I went all out and got the 80 with an extended service plan (first time I've ever given into one of those, too) because I don't trust those batteries.
I don't have Espn so now I'll be able to watch Pti finally, without going to school or somebody else's place just to occupy their television.

Well, not just batteries, those earphones suck! If I put the volume too high for a bit too long, they start to crackle whenever you listen to songs with high bass. I've already gotten 2 new pairs because of that, so I've already gotten my AppleCare's money's worth.
Oh and once I accidentally drop it on my desk while I had it against my computer and that cause a dead pixel. So yeah, I've definitely got my money's worth by now.

ESPN only offers an audio podcast right now, which in my opinion is still very good. Although I admit, the show isn't the same without the sidebar graphics and images. (I mean, every time Kornheiser wears a silly costume for Psychics or Cop Time, it's television comedy at its finest.)

My dad watches it every day. He and I ended up in the same room so often when it was on that I grew fond of those guys and watched it a little from time to time, myself. I usually had it on when I made myself lunch, because there was never anything on I wanted to watch until 5, when Seinfeld (on TBS) and That '70's Show (locally) came on. If nothing else, I'd at least watch the first segment so I could see the 'brilliant' Guinness ads at the first break.

Well here's my history of iPod replacements:
iPod: 1 pixel stuck as red, due to me accidentally knocking it from leaning to the side of my desktop to the desk. Oops.
Earphones: Constant playing in loud volume caused the earbuds to produce a "crackling" sound whenever I listen to anything with high bass.
Earphones: Probably due to me wrapping the earphones tight, my earphones (both channels) would sometimes produce only half of its sound and I would have to fiddle the jack every so often to get back the full sound.
iPod: Mentioned above.
