Somehow, between "Schism" and "Parabola", I managed to entirely miss out on hearing this song. WXRK never played it once to my knowledge ("Parabola" neither, though they literally played "Schism" to death). I didn't even hear it until a year later on KNDD, and when I did it took me a while before I actually realized what it was. I thought the opening lyrics were kinda goofy, with Maynard listing off various colors, making it sound kinda like a kids' song. However, repeated listens (and I'd say it was six at the most over the last three years) have made this one of my favorites by them.
I have to wrap up right now, but more thoughts later.

I like the color thing; it is basically just the description of things through it and makes sense (to its credit, "infancy" is mentioned in that line haha). I think this song is really beautiful and amazing. While the radio stations usually cut it to five and a half minutes, KMYZ did usually manage to play a lot more of the song, although I'm not sure if it was always the full thing.

Wasn't the song "Lateral is", while the album was "Lateral us"? Somehow, between "Schism" and "Parabola", I managed to entirely miss out on hearing this song. WXRK never played it once to my knowledge ("Parabola" neither, though they literally played "Schism" to death). It was pretty much the same way here, and I probably heard "Parabola" the most, oddly enough.

Actually, for all the detail that goes into Tool's artwork, "Lateralis" was a typo. The album title and song are supposed to be spelled the same.
Not much else to say beyond, I love it. What do you expect from my very favorite band.
DVD singles for "Schism" and "Parabola" coming out Dec. 20. Now, once and for all, I'll be able to see the full "Parabol/Parabola" video in my own living room, as opposed to just once on the screens at their Biloxi, MS concert 3 years ago.
I only saw fragments of it on MTV. Never its whole TV edit.

It was a pleasant surprise to hear this song on some syndicated metal radio show where a sailor-mouthed jock was free to say just about anything he felt like saying. It was during the intermission between Halestorm and 30 Seconds To Mars' sets and it made the wait a whole 9 minutes easier.
It was this song and not "Parabola" that was always played around here (in addition to "Schism", obviously). The only times I've ever heard "Parabola" is on Muzak, and that amounts to perhaps 4 times total.

'Cause I sure can't imagine this being made into some cheesy instrumental. (Not to be confused with MIDI's, which are actually kind of cool.) Do you even own Lateralus?

Of course I own Lateralus (in addition to everything short of Opiate and Salival), though I can see how I could have led someone to think that I don't.
And what I mean by Muzak is that it's the world's largest background music provider, which broadcasts by satellite to any subscribing venue (mostly stores and offices, but not limited to them). When I worked for my school's athletic department, sometimes we ran Muzak at the basketball arena and set it to their rock programming, mainly because that's what played Metallica and AC/DC, but "Parabola" was a part of it at the time too. Those situations are the only times I've ever heard the song outside from my CD player.

I thought it was, well, exactly what I said: cheesy instrumentals of popular songs to be played in grocery stores or whatever.

If you have Dish Network, those radio stations up in the 900's are the same as the Muzak stations. Muzak is just a company who is responsible for making sure artists get paid for the public broadcast of their music.
