Stone Sour are holding off a tough group of competitors -- this is their 5th week on top, and might make it for a 6th. I haven't posted a chart in about 3 weeks, so "Chasing Cars" at #2 might not seem that odd. But its chart run -- ...18-14-10-8-7-7-7-7-8-4-2 -- proves otherwise. However, it's Evanescence that is most likely to replace "Through Glass" at the top, leapfrogging the also-quickly-rising "Original Fire". AFI peaked at #2 last week; it has surpassed the #4 peak of "Girl's Not Grey" to become their biggest hit. Like "Chasing Cars", you'll have to look below the surface to appreciate the oddity of "The Kill"'s chart run. It rose 9-8* in its 8th week in the top 50, which isn't all that unusual until you see that this is its 30th week in the top 100. All those weeks lounging around in the 70s sure added up: 85-73-65-64-64-58-59-60-67-77-(2 wks off)-98-92-91-82-75-71-72-76-77-71-73-76-50-35-22-16-12-9-9-8 This is going to set up a very interesting situation in 3 1/2 months when my year-end chart comes out. I haven't decided how to weight positions yet, but I don't think it will be straight inverse from 100 to 1. Moreover, I might decide to follow 2004 and 2005 and not directly base my year-end chart on my weekly charts at all -- even though the only reason I started to chart album tracks in 2006 was for that purpose. The bullets all the way through #13 make this week's upper echelon quite strong. Gomez makes a nice rebound, leapfrogging Red Jumpsuit. The Killers are struggling a bit, and probably won't make the top 10 or even top 15. Muse are coming on strong, but it also has high burnout potential. I alluded to this in my Report Card grades (if anyone actually made it to my remarks in the Active Rock section) -- "Follow The Sun Down" has made by far the greatest gains in the past two weeks. I'd recommend it to anyone who can even tolerate Shinedown's slower tracks. It's better than probably all of them. (If you choose to listen to their MySpace page, though, it'll be a slightly different version than the one I've been listening to.) Most of the action in the top 50 is concentrated in the upper half. Most of the tracks below She Wants Revenge at #32 are fairly stagnant. AFI's "Prelude 12/21", at 1 minute 34 seconds, is actually not the shortest top 50 hit in my chart's history. Liam Lynch's "United States of Whatever", a top 10 hit in 2002, beats it by 5 seconds. Alien Ant Farm and Head Automatica, both already in double-digit weeks and running out of time to rise, sneak into the top 50. Not a whole lot of time these days to listen to new music, but 4 tracks off Breaking Benjamin's new album make appearances after I listened to it in full while driving to Auburn last week. #100 is an honorary-type designation this week. I happened to catch a topic in the Pulse forum about a local Urban DJ quitting on air, being fed up with years of low pay ($6?! I make more than that!) and people talking behind her back. As you might guess, her final words on air were "I quit this bitch!" UrbanInsite.com linked to a rap by "Tazz Daddy" that serves as the #100. Another version consisting mostly of her rant (with "I quit this bitch" after every line), in addition to the actual audio file, contributed "points" as well.

"Seize the Day" slips because I'm not hearing it anywhere, dammit. Atreyu's tunes rebound because I also listened to their album in the car. "Killing Loneliness" slips because I didn't hear it this past week. Tool songs rebound due to listening to that album in the car. "Bat Country" rebounds because I heard it on the radio. Lostprophets songs rebound because I also listened to their album in the car the other day. "Tell Me Baby" slips because I didn't hear it this past week. I heard "Crazy," "How to Save a Life" and "When You Were Young" again on the radio the other day. I did not, however, hear the new Evanescence tune this past week, so down it goes. Thanks for reading.
