Nick's Notes:
Now this is an exciting week for my chart.
1-10:
I heard "Wings of a Butterfly" at least once more on the radio this past week and saw the video at my girlfriend Vicky's house like, 3-4 times (I was there for 3 days), so it reclaims #2 from "The Ghost of You," which I may have heard a couple times on the radio, but did not see its video. Not only did I finally listen to City of Evil again (once in the car while with Vicky, and once in the car without her), but I heard "Beast and the Harlot" for the first time on radio and saw its video 4+ times at Vicky's house. "Beast and the Harlot" will be the next #1, but maybe not immediately. "Burn It Down" leaps ahead of the other two album cuts, because it's just a more intense, badass song and that's what I was feeding off of at the time. And finally, I'm still hearing "Stricken" and its bosom buddy (at least on my chart) "Not Now" regularly, so up they go.
11-20:
When I heard it again Valentine's morning on KNSX on the way to Vicky's, I knew it was going to be the biggest jumper on my chart this week, but then I saw "Move Along"-'s video again 5-10 times on MTV, MTV2, and Fuse while I was at Vicky's so it leaps a staggering 25 spots on my chart, likely to be the record this year, up to #12. I heard and saw "Talk" a couple of times this week, so it keeps chugging. I thought "Speak Easy" might give 311 another Top 10, but I didn't hear it at all this past week, so it's peaked. No slight to "Get Together," but I didn't actually listen to it this week, so it gets overwhelmed. I'm the only one doing any work for it and Bleeding Through's songs. I actually did hear "Helena" at least 3 times this past week, for whatever reason, but the chart doesn't indicate that.
21-30:
The trick will be to keep all these Avenged Sevenfold cuts aboard until "Seize the Day" becomes their next single and catches its due fire. I'm sure I'll see them again this spring, which will help their cause. "Save Me" would actually be bulleted still. "Perfect Situation" would have decreased its loss, at least. "Jesus of Suburbia" finally takes its tumble I felt was coming, because I largely did all the work for its latest resurgence on my chart. "Touch It" would still be bulleted, barely. I'm the only one doing any work for Atreyu, so I'm not sure how likely that one is to get much farther.
31-40:
Strong radio play finally puts NIN's latest back aboard, a spot higher than it had been so far, thank you very much. A few radio spins and a video spin send "Cash Machine" strongly onto my chart. A couple of radio spins for "Don't Tread on Me" keep 311 afloat. On a normal week, it may have actually been vacuumed up a spot or two. Sporadic spins for "Wake Me Up" keep it alive for a week or two longer. One spin on KNSX was Cold's saving grace from its unfortunate chopping block, which will likely come next week.
41-60:
Mary definitely has potential to reboard. One KPNT spin for "The Kill" was enough to send it back aboard at #42. (I'm sidestepping the 3 "shocked" entries for a moment.) No radio or video play for "Soul Meets Body" and "Fix You" sends them tumbling off. One video spin for "Sorry" was all it took to push it aboard. "Fall Into Sleep" and "DOA" backward bullet, actually. "Tragedy of Empty Streets" can overcome this setback easily. "Just Stop" is strong, while "Crazy" backward bullets.
The 's:
So lately, I've started listening to Rock radio in my scans up and down the dial. Usually I avoided it because I thought it was going to be mostly classic rock I didn't know, didn't wish to listen to again, and just the most stale, boring new stuff. And that's somewhat true. Yet I started listening to it more because I wanted to familiarize myself with more classic rock, because no one else is going to hold my hand to do it or be there to guide me. And I realize my entries don't really count as the stuff I'm referring to, but to break it down:
Metallica "King Nothing"
I've heard this 3-4 times on the radio since the beginning of the year, more than any other Metallica song. I was well aware of it when it was released at the turn of 1997 and enjoyed it very much. Hell, along with the first two Load singles, it helped change my opinion of Metallica and spearheaded my interest in them. I've owned Load for over 6 years now and due to renewed interest in this song, badly wish to listen to it again. However (I'll look to be sure), I never charted it. My intense feelings for these songs are just a phase, but I'm charting them now.
Def Leppard "Foolin' "
I was well aware Def Leppard had a song called "Foolin'," but never actually heard it until a couple days after Christmas. I loved it in the same way that I loved Skid Row, once I actually listened to them in 1999. In a genuine (not cheesy) way, but self-aware in that, I totally understand why some people would consider it cheesy. I loved the Adrenalize singles when I began listening to pop music in 1992 and have owned that album since '96, but I never was interested in their '80's singles. Mostly because "Pour Some Sugar on Me" was by far the one I hear most and it's terribly overrated. Now, however, their Vault greatest-hits CD (which I've half-ass wanted since it came out) has moved to the top of my list. (And Hysteria may come after that.) I heard "Foolin' " the second time a couple weeks ago when I played it on the jukebox at the bar my friend and I went to. Then I heard it a third time on my way to St. Louis last Sunday afternoon. I always keep the dial locked in now whenever a DJ says they have Def Leppard coming up.
Guns N' Roses "Patience"
I thought this song was pretty boring when I was just a casual GNR fan. Then I hadn't even heard the song for years, since acquiring their 3 major records in 1999. I think Avenged Sevenfold have a lot to do with this (and certainly Velvet Revolver helped, too), but I like Guns N' Roses more than ever now. Hence, after hearing this song again toward the turn of the year, I loved it suddenly, particularly because it was a GNR tune I didn't already own. I've heard it since and this was another tune I played that same night at the bar I played "Foolin' " in. I have half a mind to track down used copies of Lies and The Spaghetti Incident? now.
Anyway, I feel like double-posting these 3 songs in the Nostalgia topic, and I commend you for reading this far. (I don't blame you if you skipped out early.) Thank you very much for reading this week.
Oh, for what it's worth: Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down" would have been #58, Nine Inch Nails' "The Hand That Feeds" would have been #59, and Foo Fighters' "No Way Back" would have been #60.
