The first of a few lists. The Annoying List will probably be a guessing game, the Top 100 won't... there might be a few others if I can get to them too.
25. Rob Thomas - Lonely No More
This wouldn't be overrated because just about everyone I know thinks this is subpar, but I can't let it get away with being #1 on AC.
24. Coldplay - Talk
They had to have something on here. Even though I kinda like this, the entire reason I (and many others who like this) do is because of the riff which isn't theirs.
23. Anna Nalick - Breathe (2 AM)
Typical female singer-songwriter who stalls out of ideas to write a complete song with her first one, though I guess that's a surefire recipe for overratedness right there. There is nothing that separates her from other females with a first and last name.
22. 50 Cent - Disco Inferno
Did not need to be as wildly popular as it was.
21. Snow Patrol - Chocolate
After "Run" barely made the AAA Top 10, there is no reason the worst track on their album had to sit at #3 for about six years and end up #4 for the year.
20. D.H.T. - Listen to Your Heart
The regular version sounds too much like the original and the dance mix sounds too much like everything that was wrong with the dance remakes of "Heaven." It still filled a much-needed void in the pop chart, but there should have been a better song to.
19. Kanye West - Gold Digger
At least most people realize this isn't his greatest, but they still overrate him in general.
18. K.T. Tunstall - Black Horse & the Cherry Tree
There is no reason that a song with this title should exist or that it should be as high as it's gotten on AAA.
17. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
As much as I like this, I have to concede that the only reason this was as successful as it was was due to being on the iPod commercial, and no commercial should make a song this big.
16. U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
This really isn't that great, not even sure why I charted it. It would have barely missed this list, but Bono thinks it was good enough to make the theme song of the tsunami victims, which bumps it up about ten spaces.
15. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To
A bit too similar to their previous stuff, it just kind of seems like they tried to re-create their old sound but change it up enough to make it different, but IMO they changed it up in the wrong way.
14. Mariah Carey - Shake It Off
"It's Like That" is being spared due to certain Mariah lambs saying it's the worst track on her album, but is this one really any better?
13. Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get it Started
What a cheap attempt to make a theme song for high-school dances.
12. Fiona Apple - O'Sailor
Only problem with this one is, it's been released twice before and both times it was called "Shadowboxer." She had six years to come up with new material, and all she can come up with is this rehash which garnered much undeserved critical acclaim.
11. The White Stripes - The Denial Twist
The difference between this one and "O'Sailor" is that they released the same song twice in a row.
10. Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Want to Be
This really didn't need to get sent to pop, and it's obvious that the only reason it did is because of a TV show which I can't support. It would have been fine if it stalled in the 20s and 30s, but making it all the way to #1? Overrated.
9. Aqualung - Brighter than Sunshine
I tried to like this, I really did... but it just sounds like a bad imitation of Coldplay, and I don't think a good imitation of them would be worth it.
8. Death Cab for Cutie - Soul Meets Body
"Such Great Heights" should have been Gibbard's big hit, not this one.
7. The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
Easily the worst track on their album IMO, but everyone seems to like it the best.
6. James Blunt - You're Beautiful
I don't think this needs an explanation.
5. Green Day - Holiday
This wouldn't have been as big as it was if it wasn't for the overratedness of the preceding single, which I can't support.
4. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
It's tolerable, but that's about it. This is not "nu Mariah" as it's not that different from what she released before she became incredibly annoying.
3. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone
I normally shy away from putting songs I hate this much on my overrated list, and especially this high. But after looking at the magazine year-ends (i.e. Spin, Blender), and seeing how high this was on their year ends, and for the absolute farce of reasons they provided (I find it hard to believe that those magazines have never heard of Ani DiFranco given that they praise Clarkson here for being original), there's absolutely no hesistation about putting this here.
2. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends
I don't even hate them at all, but American Idiot is not the second coming of Christ. Although, this song wasn't even close to being as overrated as...
1. Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
#2 on last year's list, but little did I know that 2004 would only see a fraction of this generic-title, generic-arrangement, generic-lyrics, and generic-sounding teenage depression anthem's overratedness.
25. Rob Thomas - Lonely No More
