OK, so I'm not even worried about whether or not this affects the Nets performance because, despite that rousing victory over Indiana yesterday, I have a sinking feeling they're getting squashed in Detroit tomorrow anyway.
I don't know, like I said in the Youtube thread, I think even if the Nets do make the playoffs, they'll lose in the first round to Detroit, and badly. If they face Cleveland, maybe they'll have a shot, though. For a moment, I was kinda getting ready for the Nets to miss the playoffs altogether, and then hope Rod Thorn or Jay-Z or someone sells his soul to Satan in exchange for improbably getting the top pick. Although, it's not even like they really need Oden or Durant anyway, since it's likely a deep draft this year. That said, I think they will make the playoffs, if for no other reason than that Indiana and the Knicks are hitting the wall right now, leaving the Nets and Magic to fight over the 7th spot.
It just beats me up that this is happening because they should've been contending for the top seed in the East this season. But they came out of the gate flat, and then Nenad Krstic's injury eventually wound up torpedoing any shot the Nets had at even so much as the division title. Now Carter's likely going to move at season's end, either to the Magic or the Clippers in my estimation and I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the franchise just gets blown up and they start from scratch. Then again, they're moving to Brooklyn three years from now, and Bruce Ratner's probably not going to want them being a bottom-feeder when that happens. So who knows.
Either way, it doesn't really matter because I think Detroit is going to win the NBA championship. I mean, Steve may or may not think he's the only person on the planet who feels that way, but after seeing the Pistons tear through a west coast trip a few weeks ago, including a blowout the Suns, to me, they just look scary good right now. And the fact that they're getting such ridiculous luck in the form of Wallace's buzzer-beater, I mean, you knew one team in the East was eventually going to step up and take over, and I think it's clear the Pistons have done that. I think they go 12-0 in the Eastern Conference playoffs, and then after the Suns and Mavs beat each other up in the Western Conference finals, the winner goes down to the Pistons in five or six games.
