Haha, just as I type in the subject title, that's the next song on the radio. Not that that's really important to anyone, but still.
Anyway, does anyone else feel like this is a blatant payola job here? I mean, I don't like being "that guy" here, but it just seems like there's no other explanation. Here's an artist who had two top 5's on the format four years ago, plus a Spanish language song that nearly cracked the top 50 last year, yet somehow can't get her first single into the top 20? And now all of a sudden they want to give her her first #1? With a single that, while good, isn't truly that remarkable, less so than "Don't Bother" anyway, in my opinion. My guess is that Epic tried to promote "Don't Bother" on its merits and saw what happened, so they decided they should hedge their bets for this one and then figured to hedge it all the way to the top. But then again, (and I realize this sentiment is better reserved for the payola topic) probably so many song on the chart have at least some level of payola that such an argument is essentially rendered moot.
And I don't wish to cause the insinuation that I dislike the song, or that I don't like that it's #1. It's a good song, and it'll probably grow on me more, but it's still a real "meh" type of song. I just think every single prior to this (well, except for "The One") was more deserving of the feat.

It's pretty clear that there's a lot of money behind this song. Maybe not all payola...I mean, the song was on some cell phone ringtone commercial, and you don't payola commercials because you have to pay for 'em anyway. But the strategy's pretty obvious; get the song out there on the commercial, get radio to kill the song by airplay, with each spin acting as a reminder that you should buy that ringtone if you haven't yet. Worked for "Lights And Sounds" by Yellowcard and I think that's the type of marketing we're going to see from labels as long as 30 second ringtones continue to be more expensive than full digital downloads.
I don't hold anything against the song either, though. I seem to have been giving Shakira the benefit of the doubt and I would definitely not turn down a burned copy of her CD's if I was offered them. Even the older songs that I didn't like (ie. "Obsession (Tango)", "Underneath your Clothes") I don't mind anymore.

I whole-heartedly agree that this reeks of payola. I think if your poorly selling album is re-released with a new song tacked on, and it quickly ascends to #1, unless it's an obviously monumental song, there's lots of money behind you. I don't like this song at all. Musically, it's okay, I guess, but her melody when singing "my hips don't lie" really gets under my skin. And the title's such a dumbass concept in the first place. This would be in the D range if I were grading it.

I'm not crazy about this one at all, though "Underneath Your Clothes" is worse. Here's how I'd rank everything I've heard from her, sans Spanish songs:
1. "Objection (Tango)" 2. "Whenever, Wherever" 3. "The One" 4. "Hips Don't Lie" 5. "Don't Bother" 6. "Underneath Your Clothes"
If I were to include the three Spanish songs I've heard, they'd probably all be ahead of everything except "Objection".

I think it had the highest spin total on CHR/Pop (>9900) since "Complicated" broke 10,000 in '02. I'd give this about a C-, and is probably no better than 4th among her English songs (and "No" and "La Tortura" would also rank above it).
