I went to the local (and free) Jazz Festival last night which had Four80East as the headlining act. Though the songs were all instrumental, the keyboardist talked quite a bit in between songs, often announcing the titles. It's the first time I've really gone to one, and I might be going to one next week. LOL, they offered a meet-and-greet at Jack-in-the-Box. Also a relief since I've been more broke lately, having to miss Thrice , Against Me!/SSPU, and Warped (but it rained that day, so I don't know what actually happened) all this summer. Only the latter was played here. What I'll hopefully see: Porcupine Tree/Coheed and Cambria - 8/18 Deftones - 8/21 Gorillaz - 10/22 Oh, and Hot Hot Heat are scheduled to play in Austin later this month. 2 of those are played here. Austin City Limits Music Festival artists I wish I could see: The Black Keys Sonic Youth The Strokes Pete Yorn The Gaslight Anthem Manchester Orchestra Silversun Pickups Muse The Flaming Lips (the only band I'd be interested in on the 3rd day. Eagles are that night's headline act, for instance.) I wonder if I could one day try streaming radio stations from over there or look for something not-terrible online, since I adore the latest Lips album and wished I could have seen them in support in March, the SSPU/Muse show came as close as Houston, and I would like to see the Keys at least once.

That's my favorite smooth jazz act and I had no idea that they were even touring. Anyway, go me. I just won tickets to a free 'secret show' w/ Silversun Pickups & Against Me! tomorrow. They don't publicize the venue and you can only get in by winning tickets.

Kinda jealous since, as I mentioned previously, an impending storm truncated their outdoor set 4 songs early. Fall Out Boy did a similar show to the one you're describing, when, right when Folie a Deux came out, they had a secret show at a dive bar they played coming up during Take This to Your Grave, I'm sure. You obviously had to win your way in since the capacity was only a few hundred people. Not a big enough fan to have tried and 8 months later they played the relatively modest place I work at, anyway.

You obviously had to win your way in since the capacity was only a few hundred people. Not a big enough fan to have tried and 8 months later they played the relatively modest place I work at, anyway. You still saw more songs than I did Since it was only a partial-show (the full show was going to be later that evening, in Oakland) they each only did half hour sets. Still, couldn't complain since it was free, after all, and it was nice to see them that close, esp. being a few feet away from Against Me!. Against Me: 1. I Was a Teenage Anarchist 2. High Pressure Low 3. White Crosses 4. Ache With Me 5. Walking is Still Honest 6. Miami 7. Spanish Moss 8. Pints of Guinness Make You Strong If this wouldn't have been a free show, then I would have been pissed they didn't play "Thrash Unreal." Can't complain though, especially since everything they did play was really good & I was particularly impressed with the accordion player. Silversun Pickups: 1. Panic Switch 2. Kissing Families 3. Substitution 4. The Royal We 5. Well Thought Out Twinkles 6. Lazy Eye An utterly predictable lineup, with "Kissing Families" being the sole non-single, although if I knew they were going to play a non-single I would have guessed that one. SSPU = drunk, snarky hipsters. And sort of a LA new generation Smashing Pumpkins tribute band. Their songs were much less annoying live than on the radio, though. I'm still mad that I missed Live 105's BFD concert (only $40 would have gotten me in to see about a dozen bands I have at least some interest in, some of them pretty big names, but I had to move that weekend), however I must say I'm proud of myself for crossing off some of these names fairly quickly and haven't spent a penny yet: The Gaslight Anthem Against Me! Silversun PickupsHole Sublime w/ Rome The Temper Trap Spoon BT Dan Black Matt & Kim The Limousines They took our pictures before the show! Yeah! Here's mine: Next up: I just found out I won Live 105's "Party Like a Rockstar Weekend" Grand Prize, which is airfare, hotel, & admission to the Sunset Strip music festival in LA in two weeks!!!!! ;D Smashing Pumpkins here I come!

Avenged Sevenfold headlined my local radio festival tonight. The stage production was amazing. Apparently the show was running 10-15 minutes late all day. I just assumed they had to cut out at least one song ("Bat Country"), but it looks like they haven't even been playing it on tour so far. WTF (Setlist identical throughout the tour, from the looks of things.) 01. Nightmare 02. Critical Acclaim 03. Welcome to the Family 04. Beast and the Harlot 05. Buried Alive 06. So Far Away 07. Afterlife 08. God Hates Us 09. Unholy Confessions 10. Almost Easy

Saw Green Day and AFI this past Wednesday. Awesome show by both acts. My ticket said the show was going to start at 7pm, but when I was approaching the venue at 6:50pm, I could already hear AFI playing "Girl's Not Grey"! I ended up missing the first three songs of their set, but they were overall solid. I had a Section 200 seat that was all the way to the right. It was kinda annoying that since they were playing when the sun was still out, so the sun was shining right at my face as I was trying to watch the show. It was additionally annoying that my seat was the entry point for all Section 200 A-K rows and it was beside the entry to GA, so people kept crowding in front and beside of me. I wish I was able to get GA instead. The setlist is stolen from last.fm and since their setlist seem to be identical for all the stops, I'm assuming this was correct. 1. Medicate 2. Girl's Not Grey 3. The Leaving Song Pt. II 4. I Am Trying Very Hard To Be Here 5. End Transmission 6. Beautiful Thieves 7. Dancing Through Sunday 8. Silver and Cold 9. Miss Murder 10. Love Like Winter
After a really short break, Green Day started promptly at 8pm. I didn't expect them to start that early and I don't think many people did as when their set began, the sun was still out and people weren't at their seats/floor. Their set ended up being 3 hours long, so I guess it wasn't surprising that they started that early as the venue was outdoors, which had a noise restriction curfew at 11pm. They also had to rush through the "breaks" between the encores as they barely got off the stage for more than 2 minutes each time while shutting down the lights (and not even all of them) before starting again. I guess they didn't have time to play around and pretend! During the third song, Billie Joe Armstrong ran down to the crowd to greet everyone. So between the beginning of their set and then, nobody was allowed to enter/exit the GA/200 sections. Sucks to be them! Billie Joe then dragged a fan on to the stage to sing with him, as well as a 10-year old child as "sacrifice" for the following song, lol. I was pleasantly surprised at how well "American Idiot" was represented at this show as compared to "21st Century Breakdown", although I have recently came around to like the latter album, but it still doesn't compare. It'd be nice to hear songs like "Last Of The American Girls" though. Throughout the set, Billie Joe couldn't stop talking about how good Canada is and how he wants to move here, along with the obligatory lyric changes when referencing places, as well as random ones like talking about novacaine [sic]. I don't blame him. In the middle of the set, Billie Joe brought out his "Blue" guitar and he played their older material, they also played a lot of random riffs of covers as a medley where they either just played the intro, or sang the first verse + chorus. For the 24th song, they brought a fan up to sing the entire song by himself and he was actually really decent. Bille Joe gave him an electric guitar afterwards. I wish I was that guy. Anyway, amazing show with an amazing setlist. I was surprised they still have that kind of energy for such a long show. 1. Song Of The Century 2. 21st Century Breakdown 3. Know Your Enemy 4. East Jesus Nowhere 5. Holiday 6. ¡Viva La Gloria! 7. Give Me Novacaine 8. Letterbomb 9. Are We The Waiting 10. St. Jimmy 11. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams 12. Nice Guys Finish Last 13. F.O.D. 14. Burnout 15. Dominated Love Slave 16. J.A.R. 17. Paper Lanterns 18. 2000 Light Years Away 19. Hitchin' A Ride 20. When I Come Around 21. Iron Man/Eye Of The Tiger/Limelight/Sweet Child O' Mine/Ain't Talkin' Bout Love/Highway To Hell Medley 22. Brain Stew 23. Jaded 24. Longview 25. Basket Case 26. She 27. King For A Day 28. Satisfaction/Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life/Hey Jude/Shout Medley 29. 21 Guns 30. Minority
Encore: 31. American Idiot 32. Jesus Of Suburbia
Encore 2: 33. Last Night on Earth 34. Wake Me Up When September Ends 35. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

I know AFI was only the opening band, but nothing that pre-dates Sing the Sorrow, huh? Wow.
Nice that Green Day played "F.O.D." I can't remember if got "Jesus of Suburbia" or "Wake Me Up When September Ends" last summer, but I sure didn't get both.

The turnout of things Porcupine Tree/Coheed and Cambria - 8/18 - wasn't quite able to see it; maybe it it were just 2 days later or so. Deftones - 8/21: Sold out; I didn't realize this. Oh, and Hot Hot Heat are scheduled to play in Austin later this month. Potential ride celebrated birthday and Greyhound was pretty full of rides that day, which I didn't really feel like doing to begin. Shame since it's just $14 and I would have definitely seen them if I were in the same city at the time.Last night: The (English) Beat. Chris Murray opened. A friend of mine gave me a burned copy of Raw when he decided he wanted to later replace the burned copies for actual ones, so I kind of know some of those songs. (I personally wouldn't pay full price for something that sounds like it cost more to sell it than record, but that's just me .) It's basically just him playing the guitar, reggae style. No other instruments. He did get a guest to sing a couple of songs there. After his first set, I went to the pizza place that's actually a part of the venue. This group called Bad Manners was on the set. They were probably the best group on the set, despite my lack of knowledge of any of their music. I only saw some of their set. It looks like the Beat's set list has been essentially the same this summer, looking at setlist.fm. From the Ft. Lauderdale set list, they definitely did the first four songs on the set list, "Tears of a Clown" included. They did "I Take You There" (covered in the '90's from Dave's later group, General Public; on other set list, "Tenderness" also appeared from that group's first album) and also did "Save It for Later" and "Mirror in the Bathroom," of course. I left after "Bathroom" as did many other people, kind of wanting to catch the bus. They were pretty alright. Dave seemed cool, but the real energy came more from some of the musicians in the group. From title, I also remember "How Can You Stand There" being announced and "I Confess" due to previous research. STP come late this month. Oddly, them and BRMC have separate shows here.

Saw M.I.A. last night with Rye Rye opening, who was pretty dope. I will definitely have to check out her album whenever it decides to stop. Awesome show, but I can't get over how much I despise all-ages shows with these annoying kids keep pushing around. M.I.A. was on her game again and she was wearing a t-shirt saying "F**k Google! Ask Me!" (censorship was on the t-shirt) to go along with her conspiracy at how Google is somehow connected to the government. I don't really buy that because people who work for the government are lazy, unlike Google. Google may take over the world, but that's wouldn't involve the government. The crowd was only half-filled when she sold out the same venue 2 years ago, which I guess is a good thing because there were fewer people there just to hear "Paper Planes." She kept saying stuff like "Some of you download my s***. But I don't give a f*** if nobody buys my music, this s*** should be free anyway!" although she was selling the deluxe version of her album at $20 in the venue. During "Teqkilla", she started drinking from a bottle of Patrón and passed it to the crowd. With all the kids there, I'm sure there was a lot of underage drinking that night! Anyway, it was entertaining.
1. The Message 2. Illygirl 3. World Town 4. Steppin' Up 5. Bamboo Banga 6. Bucky Done Gun 7. Amazon 8. Lovalot 9. XXXO 10. Story To Be Told 11. Galang 12. XR2 13. Born Free
Encore: 14. Teqkilla 15. Paper Planes 16. Boyz 17. 10 Dollar

Guess I should post my Alice In Chains show from last Friday. Mastodon and Deftones were support. My companions and I both couldn't get off work early enough to get up there in time for Mastodon. Not that I'm familiar with anything of theirs besides "Colony of Birchmen", which they played.
We could have easily seen all or most of Deftones at the very least, but instead decided to sit in the f***ing car for 45 minutes so they could 'party'. I would have just gone and left them to do that s*** on their own, but my phone was dead and I probably would have never found them. Anyway, here's what they played: 1. Diamond Eyes 2. Rocket Skates 3. Around the Fur 4. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 5. My Own Summer (Shove It) 6. Prince 7. You've Seen The Butcher 8. Sextape 9. Passenger 10. Change (In the House of Flies) 11. Engine No. 9 12. 7 Words
Alice In Chains:
1. Them Bones 2. Dam That River 3. Rain When I Die 4. Again 5. Check My Brain 6. Your Decision 7. No Excuses 8. Grind 9. A Looking In View 10. We Die Young 11. Lesson Learned 12. It Ain't Like That 13. Rooster
Encore: 14. Rotten Apple 15. Man in the Box 16. Would?
They sounded amazing and had a stage show far more hi-tech than I would have ever anticipated out of an Alice in Chains show. Too many hits to mention that left off the set, though. Ah well; I guess they didn't even have to come back at all.

Sunset Strip Music Festival Roundup (Aug 27-28...yeah, a few weeks late ) Shortly before it was to begin I found out that the person who put together the prize pack arranged for us to get into the Billy Corgan live interview @ the Viper room - capacity was ~100. We got there a bit early -- just in time to see the interview with Slash. I was a few feet away from the stage for that. Slash was like I expected, pretty chill and obviously missing more than a few brain cells. (like most of those hard rock types are). Then was the Neon Trees interview, which not that many people were interested in so I had a front row view for that. I stayed in the front row when Billy Corgan came on! His interview was somewhat generic, about how record labels are destroying bands, but it was still cool to see. He also talked about how he had to rush around and find a new Smashing Pumpkins after the rest of his band quit (rolls eyes.) We got into the main concert just as Neon Trees were starting, and I must say even though I thoroughly enjoy their entire CD, I was incredibly disappointed by their performance. It was probably the worst real performance (meaning not one that was thrown together real quickly for free) I've seen since the Counting Crows 9 years ago (when they were drunk & the singer forgot the lyrics to "Mr. Jones" and had to look them up ). T. Glenn came across as a total idiot who tried too hard to be strange and was rolling around on stage and just being ridiculous and then at the end said stupid s*** like "it's 2010! Females can be drummers!". They didn't sound too good either (except for the drummer, but she couldn't save them). They sounded exactly like what I'd imagine a bad demo of themselves would sound like, sadly. We went club hopping (since there were a bunch of clubs within the street fest and all of them had bands that were playing all day too, which was pretty cool) We saw this one called Blowing Up the Moon, they looked like a bunch of kids -- but they were actually really good. I'd probably be annoyed by them if I heard their songs on the radio, though. We also saw John West because there was a really long line to get in somewhere and we figured if the line's that long then he must be good. We also saw a band called Audible Mainframe that was very good. Then it was time for Slash (ft. Myles Kennedy on vocals) Slash was good, but other than that I guess I don't have a lot to say just because I don't really know much of his or G&R's repetoire. He has a new CD out featuring a bunch of random artists like Fergie. Speaking of, guess who came out at the encore? Now, I actually like that Slash ft. Fergie song ("Beautiful Dangerous"), but she did not do a very convincing job of singing it there. Which was a shame because I was really hoping she'd make me raise my opinion of her. She was rolling around on stage being stupid (kind of like the Neon Trees singer in fact. :-\) and being scantily clad and shoving her @$$-cleavage up to the camera that was broadcasting the concert on the big screen above. How uncouth. Slash didn't seem to mind though, lol. Then she sang a cover of "Barracuda" which wasn't really any better. They ended the show with "Paradise City" which she *almost* pulled off, but that may be because Myles Kennedy was singing too so she just sounded like a perfectly good backup. Ok, on to the Smashing Pumpkins. Considering it's just Billy Corgan now (and a few random people), I rather enjoyed it. I thought he picked people who were perfectly capable. I wasn't able to write down the complete lineup since he played too many new songs, all of which sucked but a bunch of hits & others...I recognized Ava Adore, Eye, Today, Bullet w/ Butterfly Wings, 1979, Cherub Rock, That's The Way Love Is, Tarantula, Tonight Tonight, and Stand Inside Your Love. And, for the encore, Zero. I was disappointed that he didn't play Disarm & Perfect, but oh well, I did like most of what he did play. And, it was nice to see the Smashing Pumpkins (even if it is just Billy Corgan) because I've never seen them before but I kinda grew up with their music. Soooo...that was a wrap. Thanks LIVE 105! :-D Next up...David Gray. (Thanks KFOG! Which was actually a few weeks ago but I'll get around to writing it up one of these days.)

David Gray/Ray LaMontagne show Sept. 10: Tift Merritt was the pre-opener, she looked & sounded like pretty generic Americana. She wasn't bad but I couldn't get into her music. She only played for about 20 min though. Ray LaMontagne -- He has somewhat of a cult following, but his songs (esp. his lyrics) annoy the crap out of me. No complaints about his performance, though. I thought his band (the Pariah Dogs) had very good chemistry & he did make singing and playing the guitar seem effortless. I did appreciate the music more seeing him live. The songwriting on the other hand...still not a fan of his stream of consciousness, half-baked lyrics. It's as if they're incomplete (and, to a degree, so's his music). But I guess I can see how that can be appealing. David Gray was a rock star. Band of 6 dudes wearing fancy suits, playing cool-looking instruments, well done lighting, and jumping all over the place. (He did try too hard to rock out to the first few songs though, esp. 'Sail Away' ) Still sounded great, though. He didn't play a lot of his recent stuff, or anything off of the new B-sides release "Foundling" which was fine with me. It seemed to be more of a greatest-hits type gig, saving the best three for last (pre-encore): Be Mine, Babylon, & Please Forgive Me. "Be Mine" was spectacular and confirmed my thoughts that, while not my favorite single by him (I'd rank it middle-of-the-pack) it really should have been his biggest hit; unfortunately ATO totally bungled the order of release of singles with from "A New Day at Midnight" (which, to my disappointment, was underrepresented at this show) He did the same thing with "Babylon" as last time I saw him, which was make the audience yell "if you want it, come & get it" before playing. He ended the show (pre-encore) with "Please Forgive Me" & an additional (and much appropriately-placed) spotlight was on the drummer. Set list: (Didn't write down & look up Tift Merritt's, hope nobody's too disappointed about that ) Ray LaMontagne: 1. For the Summer 2. New York City's Killing Me 3. Forever My Friend 4. Let It Be Me 5. Beg Steal or Borrow 6. Repo Man 7. Jolene 8. Old Before Your Time 9. Hold You In My Arms 10. God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise 11. Like Rock N Roll 12. Henry Nearly Killed Me (It's a Shame) Encore: 13. Trouble 14. You Are the Best Thing (This was actually the one thing that bothered me about his set - he has 5 singles, he played 4 of them, but two were the two encore songs. IMO it's not good form to play your songs that everyone knows as the encore songs, unless you have enough to fill your set pre-encore with them. ) David Gray: 1. Draw the Line 2. Fugitive 3. Sail Away 4. The One I Love 5. Now and Always 6. Say Hello Wave Goodbye 7. This Year's Love 8. Jackdaw 9. Be Mine 10. Babylon 11. Please Forgive Me Encore: 12. Shine (Not a hot Collective Soul cover) 13. Nemesis (How I wish this would have been a hot Shreikback cover) 14. All I Want is You (Hot U2 Cover w/ Ray LaMontagne)

Just one last warning; opening this will remove all element of surprise from your future show (if applicable).
1. Bleed American 2. Your New Aesthetic 3. A Praise Chorus 4. My Best Theory 5. Let It Happen 6. For Me This Is Heaven 7. Futures 8. Big Casino 9. Action Needs An Audience 10. Dizzy 11. Coffee and Cigarettes 12. Movielike 13. Hear You Me 14. Evidence 15. Work 16. Blister 17. Goodbye Sky Harbor Encore: 18. 23 19. Pain 20. The Middle 21. Sweetness I've been waiting nine years to get my Frisbee back to see Jimmy Eat World. Nothing flashy, just the same same steadiness and reliability we've come to expect out of them over that time period. It made for a fine performance. Hilarious tongue-in-cheek explanation for their uncharacteristic use of the F-word during the first track of the new record (They were looking for a 'bad boy' image). Excellent setlist too; very little in terms of omissions. So they left off "Always Be". "Lucky Denver Mint" too, I guess, although they did make up for that with four ( ) tracks from Clarity. From what I've seen, there has been zero variation among setlists from this current tour, so if you're seeing them later and couldn't resist opening this spoiler box, don't expect any surprises . Opening was We Were Promised Jetpacks. Wasn't expecting them to be from Scotland, but when they walk out drinking what appeared to be Newcastle Brown Ale (lol), with a very UK demeanor and haircuts, one could tell right away that we were listening to imports. Very Kaiser Chiefsish. Their sound quality was too technically poor for me to get a good read on their music, enough so that I was nervous about Jimmy's being the same way. It definitely wasn't though.
So I saw the Alice in Chains, Deftones, Mastodon tour, myself, back on the 1st. But having a new girl in my life, and a second job now, has left me struggling to keep up with much else during this busy work season, which I'm sure all of you have noticed by now between here and Pulse and even Facebook, for those applicable. So here we are, finally, eleven days later...
Couldn't get there in time to see all of Mastodon, only 2/3 to half of their set. I recognized 2 or 3 songs, but couldn't tell you what the names were. I still don't own Crack the Skye, so that was a disadvantage, though I'm sure "Oblivion" was one of the songs I knew.
Deftones stole the show, at least in my eyes. Their set went:
01. Rocket Skates 02. Around the Fur 03. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 04. My Own Summer (Shove It) 05. Diamond Eyes 06. You've Seen the Butcher 07. Sextape 08. Passenger 09. Change (In the House of Flies) 10. Nosebleed 11. Engine No. 9 12. 7 Words Alice In Chains' set was almost identical to Steve's, except "We Die Young" and "A Looking in View" were reversed. And instead of "Rotten Apple" opening up the encore, I got "Angry Chair." Love "Angry Chair," but would've much rather had "Rotten Apple," which I love just as much, if not more, and is rarer. They did a great job, but having been spoiled by seeing them twice on the clock already, I found the song choices a little too predictable. Admittedly, though, they have a very rich catalog of hits that people want to hear.
So jealous of Steve getting to see Jimmy Eat World.

So jealous of Steve getting to see Jimmy Eat World. Well then I am jealous of you always running around with the lady friend, player! From the Muse show last night:
1. Uprising 2. Map of the Problematique 3. New Born 4. Supermassive Black Hole 5. Resistance 6. Intro/Hysteria 7. United States of Eurasia 8. Ruled By Secrecy 9. Undisclosed Desires 10. Time is Running Out 11. Starlight 12. Plug In Baby Encore: 13. Exogenesis: Symphony Part I (Overture) 14. Stockholm Syndrome 15. Knights of Cydonia (There's all sorts of interludes and extended riffs mixed in there...by the time I get to read what they all were, I'd forgotten what they sounded like, so I've never bothered to record them.) Same old phenomenal stage scheme with the rising towers. Had me wondering if there'll ever come a time when they have to scale back on the stage show, because they always have had to outdo their previous tour. Not much different from the setlist I saw in March, unfortunately (but I didn't even post it?). Personal setlist debut for "Ruled By Secrecy", a rarity for sure (but not as much of a rarity in recent weeks). "MOTP" returns following its absence in March. They all put on personalized Ohio State Buckeyes jerseys on right before closing out with "Knights of Cydonia", making my night and just about everyone else's night in attendance as well. Metric was the opening act. They played "Help I'm Alive" and "Gold Guns Girls", of course (G³ had a really sick guitar solo at the end). I didn't recognize anything else (They did not play "All Yours", "Monster Hospital", or "Combat Baby", for sure). Emily played her role as the cute cougar cheerleader pretty well, but she sounded drowned out by the rest of the band most of the time.

(This is all approximate for the time being; can't find a precise setlist in correct order, and I'm only familiar with about half of these.)
1. We Owe This To Ourselves 2. Paperthin Hymn 3. Disappear 4. Closer 5. Dismantle. Repair. 6. The Art of War 7. The Resistance 8. Godspeed 9. The Haunting 10. Take Me (As You Found Me) 11. The Unwinding Cable Car 12. Impossible 13. The Feel Good Drag
Encore (all acoustic): 14. A Day Late 15. Down 16. Inevitable 17. Creep (Radiohead cover)
They sounded great, connected with the audience very well, and has a fanbase involving a greater percentage of hot girls than any other rock band I've ever seen. Only negative was Stephen's mic was turned up too loud for most of the show and he didn't sound too clear, except for all the acoustic songs. Their drummer was sick and didn't return for the encore, which is why they went acoustic. Normally I'd hold covering "Creep" against any band who tried it, but I wanted to see if Stephen would really say "f***". He didn't. But he did say "hell". And he forgot the lyrics to the second verse, and winged it, which was funny.
I enjoyed Crash Kings' set very much. It took so long for their two hits to come around with me, but they did, and they sounded great last night. They did play the two hits as well as a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" to close the 8-song set. Speaking of Radiohead, the singer/pianist/keyboardist did his own tuneups on stage and played about 30 seconds of Radiohead's "Just" before the set. I think with that, and the lyrics to "You Got Me", they just might have a Radiohead obsession.
Civil Twilight weren't bad either. I had no idea they were out of South Africa. They obviously played "Letters From the Sky", and an unusual cover of "Teardrop" by Massive Attack (never pictured that song performed with a guy on vocals), as well as about four other lengthy songs I didn't recognize.
There are two songs Anberlin didn't play that, as a casual fan, I'd have been pissed about had I been there. One omission reasonable, I suppose, the other a cold slap in the groin. (Not specifying due to potentially spoiling the show for somebody.)

Simple Minds have a cover of that too! It's on the deluxe edition of their latest unreleased-in-US, "Graffiti Soul." The bonus disc has 9 covers, most of which are not very good at all. "Teardrop" is better than most of the others, but still not great. I can see Civil Twilight pulling it off decently, though.

Live 105 just announced their Not So Silent Night Concert Lineup. It's: "The Smashing Pumpkins," My Chemical Romance, Phoenix, Broken Bells, & The Black Keys. . Last year's (which I unfortunately wasn't able to see) was much better: Muse, AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars, Metric, & Vampire Weekend. It sold out the first day it went on sale. I don't expect this year's to sell out at all.

I don't expect this year's to sell out at all. Yeah, 89x's Christmas show this year has My Chemical Romance, preceded by Sick Puppies and Middle Class Rut. And I'm sure they'll throw in a bunch of local bands in there too that I'm too old to be actively interested in. For a Christmas show, where I'd have to spend so much time waiting to see who I came to see, I want something to watch. I like the Middle Class Rut song so far, but that's one song, and I'd be obligated to play iPod games on two feet for the duration of the Sick Puppies which I could just as easily do at home or on commute while sitting down. And all the west coast Christmas shows all rolled into one pretty much reveals the lineup for KROQ's currently unannounced festival which I always like to watch. But last year: FTW. They've got their work cut out for them after that, and they will need to do better than the hand that this Live 105 is showing.

So Needtobreathe came through town the other night. For a crossover Christian band, I was very impressed by their genuine passion for music and their seasoned talents. (They had a pretty elaborate stage production for the level they're at, too.) Unfortunately their songs didn't hold my interest, generally speaking. And the only song of theirs I actually know is "Hurricane," which I was looking forward to hearing, but they didn't even play it! What the hell!

I was lucky enough to catch wind of a free Dave Matthews acoustic performance just over 2 hours before it was scheduled to begin. www.dmbalmanac.com/VenueStats.aspx?vid=1823
Crush So Damn Lucky Satellite Stay or Leave Rye Whiskey Save Me You & Me Don't Drink the Water I got there before 5:30 for the 7:00 start and still was only able to get into the 4th/5th row. I only recognized half of the songs: "Crush", "Satellite", "You & Me", and "Don't Drink the Water". The 45-minute set was shorter than I expected, but I enjoyed his crowd banter and I got a free "I'M A PC" T-shirt out of it.
I finally got to see Jimmy Eat World play live for the first time as part of the Deck the Hall Ball. It also featured Sleigh Bells, the Temper Trap, Cake, the Black Keys, and Broken Bells.
Bleed American My Best Theory Coffee and Cigarettes Big Casino Pain Last Christmas Hear You Me Work Blister Get It Faster The Middle Sweetness
I was glad that they were able to fit 12 songs in, considering 5 other bands had to play that night. I was generally satisfied with the setlist as well. I didn't expect something like "Polaris", which is my favorite JEW song, but they were able to throw in a great album track like "Get It Faster", and I mean let's just put it this way: they played 5 songs that hit #1 on my chart ("Big Casino", "Pain", "Work", "The Middle", and "Sweetness" and a #2 ("My Best Theory)" -- not even counting "Bleed American", which charted nationally just before I got into JEW.
The only negative is that I ended up watching from the seats way far away. I was with friends, most of whom weren't big JEW fans, and I wasn't feeling very well anyway. It turns out I had pneumonia.

Admittedly, I have no "spoiler" tags for the Jimmy Eat World concert I saw last night. Sadly, no "A Praise Chorus," and I frankly would have liked some Bleed American album cuts as well.
However, they did perform just about the rest of their main hits. Like many legs, the encore did in fact have the same 3 songs. I sang along to all of "Blister," though oddly I'm not highly familiar with a lot of the album cuts on the non-BA albums. I did notice some from Clarity which I quite enjoy and some from Futures.
I was glad that a relevant band actually came by.

How the hell could they not play "Almost Easy", and to a lesser extent, "Seize The Day", "Beast and the Harlot", and "Scream" on a 70 minute, 12-song headlining set. They aren't at a point in their career where they can be pulling that s***. That aside though, this will be hard to top for concert of the year '11. They sounded great, had plenty of rad imagery, and propane burning everywhere. "So Far Away" was dedicated to Jimmy, which made my eyes water. Plus the weather and traffic during the trip up there kept us driving long enough to completely avoid watching Hollywood Undead, so that worked out perfectly in our favor.
Steve, I've been trying to figure out how I should handle this, seeing as I won't be able to see this tour anywhere.
I've been thinking of looking up their set for this tour on YouTube and piecing it together. In order to keep some element of surprise for me, though, do you think you could post the set list one song at a time, waiting for me to confirm that I've watched a video of each song before you name the next one? (E.g., Let's say the first song was "Nightmare." I would then look up a performance of it from this tour, tell you when I've seen it, and then you'd post whatever song they played second, and so forth.)

I saw "The Ultimate Viral Video Concert" ( ) last night: Atomic Tom w/ OK Go! Once the singer got ahold of his voice and decided to show no restraint (after about 1-2 songs), Atomic Tom rocked the house. No playing on iPods here (I've heard they do that with some concerts), but they didn't need to for an amazing show. OK Go, sadly, I wanted to like so badly but was less impressed with. Their music did not live up to their performance...meaning they upstaged themselves, and not in a good way. Their gimmicks were pretty f***ing awesome. They came onstage with fancy color-coordinated suits, pummeled (and I do mean pummeled) the entire club with confetti about a dozen times, and for their encore, they changed into jackets with electronic displays on back, first spelling out O K G O and then changing into happy and angry faces, and their guitars (one of which had a marquee which flashed words and sentences across) started glowing and shooting laser beams!!! Not surprising from the band that puts this kind of creativity into their videos: The only problem was...their music was just kinda...blaaaargh. White Knuckles was good, some song about Skyscrapers was good, they played a song entirely on handbells which was pretty rad (I think it was a different one than they usually do), and Here It Goes Again was decent. Everything else...not so much. They tried too hard to rock out and, with the exception of Here It Goes Again, every song they tried to do that with ended up sounding like garbage. I would like to see them go more in the direction of their funky/artsy songs (i.e. White Knuckles), or even better --and OK Go is probably the only band that this would actually work -- just stick to gimmicks. They'd probably make a pretty solid cover band too, but I doubt they'd go for that.
1. Success 2. Say Hello to the Angels 3. Narc 4. Hands Away 5. Barricade 6. Rest My Chemistry 7. Evil 8. Length of Love 9. Lights 10. C'mere 11. Summer Well 12. Take You on a Cruise 13. The Heinrich Maneuver 14. Memory Serves 15. Obstacle 1 Encore: 16. Untitled 17. Slow Hands 18. The New 19. Not Even Jail
Grabbed from setlist.fm. I have to assume this is right, since I was too busy to keep track, myself, and my song title knowledge beyond the singles and beyond Turn on the Bright Lights is poor. From the songs I actually knew by title, this looks right. However, for someone who likes Interpol enough to have put the setlist up on the website, I'm surprised they completely missed one of the encore songs, which I filled in here, myself. Turn on the Bright Lights is by far my favorite record of theirs. Otherwise, Antics (which I didn't have enough money for on the Super Tuesday that was 9/28/04, and finally heard three years later, thanks to one of you guys), Our Love to Admire (which I bought from a customer over three years ago, but didn't seriously spend time with until a couple weeks ago), and the new record (which The Girl - huge Interpol fan - uploaded onto my computer a couple weeks ago) I like about the same. All 3 of their last records have songs I instantly forget, whereas I can't remember "Roland" or "Obstacle 2" off the first album, but I know I really like them when I put them on again. They sounded amazing and I wish I hadn't had to listen through the hallway doors. My only issue is that Paul didn't attempt the high note in the "Barricade" chorus, instead letting the barely audible background vocalist tackle it. Oh, and I was disappointed when they soundchecked a little bit of "Stella Was a Diver" (sans vocals) but didn't play it during the show, making it all a big tease. I mean, I got to hear it the last time they played, but still, that's an amazing song I was looking forward to. For as much of a fan favorite as I gathered it to be, I assumed it was a live staple. And come to think about today, there were a couple TOTBL singles they didn't play. One's not a big deal, but the other is my favorite song of theirs.
