Nick's Notes: 1-20: "The Royal We" bounces back from burnout. "Airplanes" is making its run for the Top 10. "Diamond Eyes" hangs tight while "Rocket Skates" tumbles simply because the former is on the radio. "Oildale" rebounds due to buying Korn III.
21-30: "Careful" makes a big jump because I decided last Sunday to try to listen to the Alternative chart song by song each weekend, a la my AT40 Sundays, so I can regularly hear the Alternative hits my station ignores. Hopefully I can keep that up and I'm surprised I didn't think to do this a long time ago. Unfortunately this would mean voluntarily listening to "Uprising," "Savior" and other dinosaurs once a week still. We'll see how that works out for me. Stone Sour's new song really excites me so far. I have a hunch this may break into my Top 10 or 5 soon the way "Not Afraid" and "The Only Exception" did recently.
31-40: First time hearing "Take a Load Off" on the radio this week is good enough to boost it into a strong debut. "Rude Boy" is getting a little long in the tooth after so much radio play. Not sure if "Tighten Up" has peaked yet or not. "Can't Be Tamed," done on the Pop chart is a sitting duck now on mine. At least AT40 will hold onto it a little longer than my Pop station. Radio saturation is putting the hurt on "Break Your Heart." "Trinity" squeaks onto my Top 40 thanks to my proactive Alternative chart experiment from last weekend. Thanks for reading.
Previous #1's this week: 2009: Lady Gaga "LoveGame" 2008: Avenged Sevenfold "Afterlife" (#2: OneRepublic "Stop and Stare") 2007: Justin Timberlake "Summer Love" 2006: 30 Seconds to Mars "The Kill" 2005: Avenged Sevenfold "Beast and the Harlot" 2004: Avenged Sevenfold "Unholy Confessions" 2003: AFI "Girl's Not Grey" 2002: Red Hot Chili Peppers "By the Way" 2001: Tool "Schism" (#2: Linkin Park "Crawling") 2000: blink-182 "Adam's Song" (#2: A Perfect Circle "Judith") 1999: Orgy "Blue Monday" (#2: Red Hot Chili Peppers "Scar Tissue") 1998: Rancid "Bloodclot" 1997: Bad Religion "Parallel" 1996: Rage Against the Machine "Bulls on Parade" 1995: The Offspring "Gotta Get Away" 1994: Aerosmith "Crazy" 1993: Bobby Brown "Humpin' Around" 1992: Bryan Adams "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven"

These last few charts of yours and I'm noticing just how many pop songs are on it. Are you conscious of this? Am I wrong? I guess I'm at least semi-conscious of it. (Although interestingly, the only pop song in my top 9 is at #1. ) I remember a few months back, I had heard more of the pop chart than I had of the alternative chart. Let's try it again: Haven't heard on Pop (or I don't remember it anymore): (9) Impossible; (18) Somebody to Love; (21) Misery; (22) We'll Be a Dream; (24) Beautiful Monster; (31) Magic; (35) La La La; (37) Club Can't Handle Me; (40) If It's Love; (41) Got Your Back; (45) Touch; (48) Love Like Woe; (50) Like We Used To. That's 37/50 I've heard. Haven't heard on Alt (or I don't remember it anymore): (6) The Crow and the Butterfly; (16) Nightmare (in full); (17) Yeah Yeah Yeah; (18) Amongst the Waves; (20) Tighten Up; (21) Another Way to Die; (22) Little Lion Man; (23) Diamond Eyes; (25) Afterlife; (26) Trinity; (27) Take a Load Off; (29) Maybe; (30) You Got Me; (31) Kick In the Teeth; (32) Say You'll Haunt Me; (34) Your Betrayal; (37) End of Me; (38) Bad Company; (39) Trippin' Down the Freeway; (41) Lesson Learned; (43) Laredo; (44) Lights Out; (45) Eclipse (in full); (46) Sleepyhead; (47) Careful; (48) Rhinestone Eyes; (49) Have Faith In Me; (50) Boxer. That's 22/50 I've heard. Perhaps I should undertake the experiment you're currently doing with the Alt chart. But although my chart is probably more pop-leaning than normal, I wouldn't say it's overly poppish; depending on the definition, I'd say about 20-22 out of my 50 songs are best classified as "pop". Out of the 28 songs I haven't heard on the Alt chart, which 5 would you recommend (besides "Nightmare", of course, which I have at least heard a little bit of)? I would like to hear Bush, Stone Sour, Metric, Paramore, and the Gaslight Anthem sooner than most, probably.

After reading above post, I looked at the current chart and was underwhelmed at how much I didn't know. I guess I haven't really listened to the radio in like a month or so, and it's finally catching up.

Out of the 28 songs I haven't heard on the Alt chart, which 5 would you recommend? I would like to hear Bush, Stone Sour, Metric, Paramore, and the Gaslight Anthem sooner than most, probably. You ask me for five, but then you list five of your own. I'll just assume you want me to recommend 5 more. Strictly limiting myself to that number, I'd go with (in Alt chart order) Tighten Up, Little Lion Man (especially since it's so rootsy and different from anything else on the chart. It's closest relative is "Home," but they sound nothing alike), Diamond Eyes, Trinity, and Rhinestone Eyes.

"Sleepyhead" is one of them that I would personally recommend, since some of the others have already been selected.

Strictly limiting myself to that number, I'd go with (in Alt chart order) Tighten Up, Little Lion Man (especially since it's so rootsy and different from anything else on the chart. It's closest relative is "Home," but they sound nothing alike) Indeed. I'm not too big on "Home", but I enjoyed "Little Lion Man" immediately and have played it several times since. Diamond Eyes was a relative disappointment from previous Deftones singles (see "Minerva"), but still not too bad. Trinity had a nice RHCP-ish sound to it, so I'll be playing that one some more. Rhinestone Eyes was... well, it was a big WTF. I think the only reason it's even charting is because it's Gorillaz. (Edit: After reading some lyrics from the song, I might have heard an unfinished demo. I don't remember that many lyrics in the song I heard.) And circling back, I don't remember too much about Tighten Up, but I don't think it would be a big chart hit for me. As for my 5: "Careful" is good, as expected; "I'm Yours" is good, but not as good as expected from a Metric single (but maybe as good as I should have expected from the same Eclipse soundtrack that produced the relative clunker "Neutron Star Collision"); "Boxer" was good, but falls squarely in the middle of the dichotomy of Gaslight Anthem stuff I've heard ("The '59 Sound" and "Great Expectations" on one end, and "Old White Lincoln" on the other end); "Say You'll Haunt Me" was good as expected (excellent, even), but a slightly different kind of song (they usually either lean metal like "30/30-150" or lighter like "Bother" or "Through Glass"); and "Afterlife" was a bit disappointing (and about 90 seconds too long). "Sleepyhead" is one of them that I would personally recommend, since some of the others have already been selected. This one was decent, but didn't measure up to "The Reeling" or "Little Secrets".

14 SECONDS TO MARS "This is War"(#14)[11] 12 SECONDS TO MARS "This is War"(#12)[14] Did they make it? They were so close! Why did they stop??? WHY??? . It still has a good shot at the top 10. It's not really in danger of being leapfrogged by "American Slang" or "Neutron Star Collision" in the immediate future (or ever, more than likely, because they're both underwhelming by the (high) standards of their respective artists).

I thought he was drawing attention to the fact that you accidentally deleted the "30 (Thirty)" at some point. Haha, yeah, you're probably right. Oops. It looks like the deletion happened two months ago too. Additionally, Mumford & Suns has been on my chart for the last 6 weeks and Metric's 2nd single was "Gold en Guns Girls" for the first couple months of its run. I guess that's what copy-pasting and being too lazy to re-type them each week will do.
