Let's get my annual year-end charts started, while I have plenty of time this month to work on them. I'll try to put 'em up as quickly as I make 'em. (With the exception of my Top 200 songs of the decade, which, barring last-minute revisions to include more '09 songs, has been ready for a month. It would likely ruin the surprise element of my Top 256 Songs of 2009, which isn't even made yet.)
Here's my annual revision to my 100 favorite musicians of all-time. The Top 10 artists have been locked in for several years now, and are unlikely to change anymore, except for a slight shift in order. I didn't even look at last year's list when making this one. Instead I just scanned my list of albums I own, and knocked off 30 contenders to arrive at this year's 100. I tried to be as realistic as possible, making excruciating and tedious comparisons when the victor between a pairing was unclear, and judge each artist among their entire discography (or however much I was familiar with). If an artist's vast catalog paled in comparison to the overall quality of another artist's shorter catalog, I'd take the best albums of the senior artist and match them against the number of albums the junior artist had to work with and see if any difference was made. I'd compare each (applicable) album of one artist against each (applicable) album of another and count up the overall points. For artists with careers before I was born or cognizant of pop music, their placements were usually pretty clear. I'd Wikipedia a list of their singles if I needed any help. The list is just my favorites in terms of the music. I may respect a lot of these artists in a different order than they're placed, but this is the order I generally enjoy listening to them. For artists like Timbaland, the Neptunes and Dr. Dre, it's impossible to separate all the recordings under their own names from the tracks they've produced for other artists. But enough talk. Here's the list:

My Top 256 Songs of 2009 are all ready to go. Still not sure if I wanna go to the trouble of some kind of guessing game for the Top 100.
In the meantime, 403 songs were considered this year for my annual list. I ranked all way down to #403, but it's a Top 256, not a Top However Many Songs Were Taken Into Consideration List. So first I'll alphabetize #'s 267-403.
Before I do that, though, I'd like to point out that plenty of unlisted album cuts would've realistically ranked higher than a lot of these songs. It's just that if I know there's no chance album cuts (after a certain point) would make the list, I don't even bother to rank them. The leftovers are numerous enough as it is. So do I like at least one absent album cut from Fall Out Boy, The Lonely Island, U2, Chris Cornell, Britney Spears, Green Day, Eminem, Rancid, Dredg, Killswitch Engage, Brand New, Reverend Horton Heat, Paramore, Alice in Chains, Muse, Atreyu, Lady Gaga, Clipse, Timbaland, and 30 Seconds to Mars more than at least one of the songs that follows? Absolutely, but I already know they wouldn't be at least #256, so I didn't bother. Anyway, here's #403-267 alphabetized:
AFI "Fainting Spells" AFI "We've Got the Knife" AFI "Where We Used to Play" AFI "100 Words" Akon "Right Now (Na Na Na)" (52) Alice in Chains "All Secrets Known" Alice in Chains "Last of My Kind" The All-American Rejects "Gives You Hell" Anberlin "True Faith" (47) As I Lay Dying "The Sound of Truth" [#31, 2w] Atreyu "Bleeding Is a Luxury" Natasha Bedingfield "Pocketful of Sunshine" [#37, 1w, 2008: #38] Birdman f/ Lil Wayne & Drake "Money to Blow" The Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow" (48) The Black Eyed Peas "Meet Me Halfway" (51) Bleeding Through "Death Anxiety" [#37, 2w, 2008: #78] Brand New "Gasoline" Chris Brown f/ Lil Wayne & Swizz Beatz "I Can Transform Ya" Mariah Carey "Obsessed" (52) Julian Casablancas "Out of the Blue" (56) Chevelle "Letter from a Thief" CKY "Rats in the Infirmary" (60) Clipse f/ Cam'ron & Pharrell "Popular Demand (Popeye's)" [#24, 2w] Clipse f/ Kanye West "Kinda Like a Big Deal" Clipse f/ Pharrell "I'm Good" (50) Clipse "Door Man" [#23, 2w] Converge "Concubine" (57) Converge "Fault and Fracture" (60) Converge "You Fail Me" (52) David Cook "Light On" (59) Creed "Overcome" Creed "Rain" Miley Cyrus "The Climb" (53) Dave Matthews Band "Funny the Way It Is" (48) Dead by Sunrise "Let Down" (60) The Dead Weather "I Cut Like a Buffalo" Death Cab for Cutie "Meet Me on the Equinox" The-Dream f/ Kanye West "Walkin' on the Moon" Dredg "The Canyon Behind Her" (44) Eminem f/ Dr. Dre & 50 Cent "Crack a Bottle" Eminem "We Made You" (44) Eminem "Same Song and Dance" Every Time I Die "Wanderlust" Far "Pony" Fleet Foxes "Mykonos" Flo Rida f/ Kesha "Right Round" Flo Rida f/ Wynter "Sugar" F.L.Y. I decided while typing up 256-101 for myself that it would be fun to do a guessing game based on descriptions. A couple of them had come naturally and the further I got, the more I tried to come up with clues. Let's wade into the shallow end by starting with 256-251, so that we end up with sets divisible by 25. I'll put up clues for 250-226 right away, once these first six are correctly guessed. I almost have to do some kind of guessing game for my Top 100 now. I doubt I'll even keep track of points during this first game, but that leads me to mention for the Top 100, that, especially based on how quickly songs go in jdmasta289's games on PMB, I'm tossing around an idea to make the playing field more level, so the early bird doesn't have the lion's share of the luck. (Look at me, unintentionally tossing around all those animal-based metaphors/adages. ) Anyway here are descriptive clues for 256-251: 256. I don't go out of my way to listen to this song like I would for, say, "November Rain" or "New Year's Day" (especially since there's 52 times more potential, weather coinciding), but I did think to play it on purpose while driving to work one day a long time ago and it was pretty fun. (What, still with this song?? ) Shiny Toy Guns "Rainy Monday" (mtm4319) 255. Exclusive eternal suffering (album cut) Alice in Chains "Private Hell" (halo19) 254. If you're an unhealthily obsessive fan of this "When She Cries" band, a doctor might diagnose you as having this. (album cut, which, I should clarify, is not by said "When She Cries" band.) Green Day "Restless Heart Syndrome" (WotUNeed) 253. If someone's mercilessly being rude to you, you might tell them this. New Boyz "You're a Jerk" (halo19) 252. The scientific composition of a traffic-related tragedy (album cut...What, still with this song?? ) Shiny Toy Guns "Chemistry of a Car Crash" (halo19) 251. Bleeding Gums Murphy would be one, I suppose. (album cut) The Lonely Island featuring Jack Black "Sax Man" (crash46)

251. Bleeding Gums Murphy would be one, I suppose. (album cut)
Since the clue is a Simpsons reference, I was waiting to see if Steve could figure it out, but it looks like he's since logged in at this point. John Coltrane, Dave Koz, even Kenny G are examples of this. Hell, speaking of Restless Heart (see #254), the featured guest on their follow-up single, "Tell Me What You Dream," Warren Hill, is yet another example.
EDIT: Oh! If you're familiar with a particular episode of Seinfeld, Elaine's boyfriend might be the most relevant example of all, with regards to this song (specifically his record label showcase performance, immediately after he and Elaine "added another number to their repertoire").

251. The Lonely Island (featuring Jack Black) - "Sax Man"?
(I logged in earlier but was sidetracked after reading the first couple posts. As in, never noticed this, or Sunny's, or Ethan's had just started as well.)

250. What Faith Hill sings at the end of the choruses of her biggest crossover hit. Pearl Jam "Just Breathe" (friday) 249. Title is reminiscent of the tongue-in-cheek title of a really old Queens of the Stone Age single. That is, if you chop off the second half of it. Anberlin "Feel Good Drag" (crash46) 248. 2/3 the title of Des'ree's huge hit + 1/2 the title of the third single from Korn's Issues. Nickelback "Gotta Be Somebody" (friday) 247. Chop off the first word of Shai's third single and you get the title of this one. Jason Mraz "I'm Yours" (friday) 246. "Except after C." (Not counting that whole extra "neighbor" and "weigh" business.) (album cut) Paramore "The Only Exception" (mtm4319) 245. Last two words of Vanessa Williams' contribution to Disney's Pocahontas movie + The title of a Johnny Depp movie from much earlier in the decade, pluralized. The All-American Rejects "The Wind Blows" (Mega248) 244. Hot As I Lay Dying remake! No? Hot Mariah Carey remake, then! Band name is a poetic way of essentially saying "now." In This Moment "Forever" (friday) 243. What Mrs. Lovejoy told Bart a monkey-man hybrid would be. (album cut) Paramore "Playing God" (friday) 242. Kings of Leon single + one of the B's in BSB + the first word in the band name of #244. Dead by Sunrise "Crawl Back In" (mtm4319) 241. Annie Lennox's solo debut album Beyoncé "Diva" (friday) 240. (album cut) Kanye West "RoboCop" (mtm4319) 238. Track 8 off The Colour and the Shape + the first word in the band name of #244 + the M in MCR + the second word (pluralized) in the follow-up single to #226. What Carl and Master Shake pooled their money and did together. (Frylock officiated the ceremony.) (album cut) Brand New "Bought a Bride" (friday) 235. Generic call for someone's attention 311 "Hey You" (friday) 230. I guess the synonymous title for this might be "Not Vast's signature song." The Veronicas "Untouched" (WotUNeed) 229. Half of the titular sentence in a Garth Brooks hit. (I say sentence because you need a few extra words beyond Garth's title.) Manchester Orchestra "I've Got Friends" (mtm4319) 228. Remove the "The" in front of this current band's name (not a "The" band from 2002) and you'll have the name of another band's bonus track that I liked better than most of the other songs on the album. (album cut) Atreyu "Bravery" (BlahBlahBlah) 227. The Strokes' debut album title in a different order Staind "This Is It" (Mega248) 226. Beck once sang about a breath mint made of this. 250) Pearl Jam - Just Breathe 248) Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody 247) Jason Mraz - I'm Yours 244) In This Moment - Forever 241) Beyonce - Diva 238) Kanye West - See You In My Nightmares 233) Miley Cyrus - Party In the USA 231) 311 - Hey You Excellent. And here I was thinking #244 would be a little tough. 227) Michael Jackson - This Is It Crap. That song never came to mind. Right title, obviously, but wrong artist. Sorry 'bout that. 245. All-American Rejects- "The Wind Blows" 232. U2- "Unknown Caller" 227. Staind- "This Is It" 226. Metallica- "Cyanide" 4 for 4. 250. (You're welcome for the clue inspiration. ) Wait, what?? [looks in the song's Pulse topic] Aw, crap. I swear I'd already forgotten that, but I'm sure it got lodged somewhere in the recesses of my subconscious. Sorry for the lack of originality there. 242. Dead By Sunrise - Crawl Back In 229. Manchester Orchestra - I've Got Friends Got 'em. 233. Miley Cyrus: "Party in the USA," maybe Sorry, but Michael already got that one (and with a lot more confidence, too. ) 230. The Veronicas: "Untouched" You're right about that one, of course. (I was kinda hoping Kirk would see it first, though, being the biggest Vast fan among us.) 234. Bleeding Through - "Germany" Indeed. Here's what's left over: 249. Title is reminiscent of the tongue-in-cheek title of a really old Queens of the Stone Age single. That is, if you chop off the second half of it. Anberlin "Feel Good Drag" (crash46) 246. Sorry, but Michael already got that one (and with a lot more confidence, too. ) Haha, oops, sorry. I determined that only two of the ones I had guesses for were still on the board and still managed to screw up which two. 240. Framing Hanley: "Lollipop"

249. Anberlin - "Feel Good Drag"
That's all I can figure out in the time I have.

240. Framing Hanley: "Lollipop" That's the one. 249. Anberlin - "Feel Good Drag" That's all I can figure out in the time I have. Well at least you made your time count. Now that Steve has guessed, here's what's left over, adding hints: 246. "Except after C." (Not counting that whole extra "neighbor" and "weigh" business.) (album cut) HINT: I unwittingly gave away a key piece of one of the crucial words in the title. Paramore "The Only Exception" (mtm4319) 243. What Mrs. Lovejoy told Bart a monkey-man hybrid would be. (album cut) HINT: A correct answer for one of the other unguessed songs in this round should lead to this one being unlocked as well. Paramore "Playing God" (friday) 239. I wonder what Peter Weller thinks of this song. (album cut) Kanye West "RoboCop" (mtm4319) 237. I wonder what Lauren Weisberger would think of these guys and this hilarious (sanitized) cover they recorded last year. (album cut) HINTS: Google these people! Even I didn't know who they were before making these clues! The Devil Wears Prada "Still Fly" (crash46) 236. What Carl and Master Shake pooled their money and did together. (Frylock officiated the ceremony.) (album cut) HINT: The key words in this Aqua Teen Hunger Force-reference clue (just in case somebody didn't know) are "money" and "officiated the ceremony." Brand New "Bought a Bride" (friday) 235. One of the words in a long-running children's TV program + the title of a classic Journey ballad. (album cut) HINT: A little surprised this one didn't get picked up yet. The TV program in question was honored by Google's homepage this fall every day for a week. (And the Journey ballad is not "Open Arms.") Kanye West "Street Lights" (mtm4319) 228. Remove the "The" in front of this current band's name (not a "The" band from 2002) and you'll have the name of another band's bonus track that I liked better than most of the other songs on the album. (album cut) HINT: The "The" band in question counts a Hot Brooks & Dunn remake ( ) as a hit single of their own. Or was it Dig's 1994 MTV Buzzclip? Or was it...(Oh, brother. Here we go... ) Atreyu "Bravery" (BlahBlahBlah)

249. Anberlin - "Feel Good Drag" f*** me. Oh well. The only "really old" Queens of the Stone Age single I know is "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret". 239. Kanye West - "RoboCop" 237. (My Google-hunting went like so: Lauren Weisberger --> author of The Devil Wears Prada --> Book is about a fashion magazine editor inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour --> The lyrics "Caught up in the in crowd/Now you're in-style/and Anna Wintour ["in the winter"] gets cold/in Vogue ["en vogue"] with your skin out --> Jay-Z f/Alicia Keys "Empire State of Mind". But it's an album track, so that's not it.) 235. Well, I think I know the title, but not the artist.

f*** me. Oh well. The only "really old" Queens of the Stone Age single I know is "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret". "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" was the follow-up. Now whether that was "official" I couldn't say with 100% certainty. It is a fairly well-known cult favorite, nonetheless, since its lyrics consist only of drugs. (Fun fact: Judas Priest's Rob Halford sings background vocals on it.) 239. Kanye West - "RoboCop" Yes sir! 237. But it's an album track, so that's not it.) You should've quit while you were ahead. 235. Well, I think I know the title, but not the artist. Seriously? If you do indeed have the right title, I can't imagine you not being able to come up with the artist. You'll probably kick yourself if someone swoops in and steals this.

237 could be "Still Fly" by The Devil Wears Prada themselves.

237 could be "Still Fly" by The Devil Wears Prada themselves. Not only could it be, but it is!

I'll assume it's OK to Google a word or name you derived yourself from the clue... so I'll go with Kanye West "Streetlights". (I gave "808s & Heartbreak" a try, but I didn't remember that title offhand.)

Finally, I may have something!

(I gave "808s & Heartbreak" a try, but I didn't remember that title offhand.) I figured if you were able to come up with "RoboCop," there's no reason you wouldn't be able to get "Street Lights," too. 228. Atreyu "Bravery" Finally, I may have something! You sure do! 3 left, none by anybody we've seen yet. 246. "Except after C." (Not counting that whole extra "neighbor" and "weigh" business.) 243) Paramore - Playing God 236) I do know which episode you're referring to (and I remember you had a bit of dialogue from it in your signature at one time), but I still can't figure out what song you're referring to.

243) Paramore - Playing God Yes! And since you answered this one first, does that unlock anything else? Open-ended to anybody, as I'd love to put up another set of 25 tonight. 236) I do know which episode you're referring to (and I remember you had a bit of dialogue from it in your signature at one time), but I still can't figure out what song you're referring to. Hey! You're right! So aw, you're so close then! C'mon now, what did Master Shake and Carl do together in that episode? s***, man, even knowing the name of the episode (which is obvious when you come across it) oughta help out with the title, if not the artist.
