I've never been blown away by anything Shakira's done and I think her biggest hit, "Hips Don't Lie," kind of blows. This big, bad "She Wolf," however, pretty much blows down all of her previous singles instantaneously to be my favorite of hers; the second listen only confirmed this. Unfortunately for Shakira, that's because it has next to none of her personality and is more of an anonymous electro-pop song. The bass line reminds me of New Order, the song itself vaguely reminds me of "Disturbia," and there's an ethereal mood to it not unlike Telepopmusik's "Breathe," or a chilled Aphex Twin song from the Richard D. James album.
I'd be perfectly fine with this as a future #1. Other #1 contenders I'd be satisfied with are "You Belong with Me," "Good Girls Go Bad," and "Use Somebody."

Unfortunately for Shakira, that's because it has next to none of her personality and is more of an anonymous electro-pop song. I heard this on somebody's MySpace page yesterday and let it play. It couldn't have been more than three seconds after she started singing that I thought " This is really her hot new single? How are we even supposed to know it's her?" But I kept listening. It was surprisingly interesting and good.

Hmm. I thought this song blew ass the first three times I attempted to sit through the whole thing. It's different than her usual output, I'll give her that. But it's the kind of "different" that made me dislike "SexyBack" for a good while when it first came out, except right now I dislike this one somewhat more. I eventually came around on "SexyBack", but "She Wolf" has a bigger mountain to climb.

I have no idea what the hell she says for like 70% of the song. Granted, that probably holds true for many of her other songs, but the ratio of undecipherable words in this song is higher. I do like it though, even she jumped on the dance-pop bandwagon.

And I have to add that the howl in the chorus cracks me up every time.
