Nick's Notes:1-10:"Panic Switch" kind of sneaked up and took #1 for itself last week. "Poker Face," now suddenly an unforeseen #1 threat, got assisted last weekend (along with "Just Dance") from being played over the PA (with video accompaniment) at my work for some rich girl's high school graduation party. Also, I took the time out to fully absorb them on AT40 last weekend. The one-two punch of the girl's party and AT40 will explain a lot of songs this week. "I'm on a Boat" was actually the last song/video played at the party. If I'm not hearing "Show Me What I'm Looking For," then it can't move up. My Alt station is playing the hell out of "Half-Truism," which is awesome any way you look at it, but mostly because the Offspring are headlining its upcoming festival show.
11-20:"Gunslinger" and "Unbound" (note its huge rebound last week) are sticking around due to playing them in my car at least a couple of times when I visited my family for Mother's Day a couple weeks ago. (It helped "Brompton Cocktail" re-enter the chart last week, too.) "Wrong" looks like it suddenly has peaked already. Finally "Last One to Die" has hit its true stride. I'd really like for "Scream" to fall off before "Afterlife," but I keep hearing the former every now and then (being the more recent single and all), way more than I still hear the latter. Sadly "Life in Technicolor ii" and "Magnificent" have peaked.
21-30:The graduation party and full AT40 attention explain "Beautiful" blasting back aboard, way higher than it ever got in its first run. It can only tumble back down, though. I don't know if it's a testament to how average the song really is, but I keep ending up surprised that "Know Your Enemy" isn't gaining much ground. "Heartless" I heard in the car on my Mother's Day trip, but also paid it full attention on AT40.
31-40:I should be so over this song, especially when I knew it would not only be the second single, but a deserving huge smash when I heard them play it live a year ago, but I can't help but enjoy "Second Chance" more than ever now.
I really like the opening acoustic strummed chords, the background orchestration, the huge drum fill back into the final chorus and the soaring choruses, themselves. "Let It Rock" surprisingly debuts on my chart out of nowhere, despite being a contender earlier this year, due to the graduation party and AT40. "Welcome to the World" re-enters because it was back-to-back with "Let It Rock" on the countdown. The graduation party is the only reason "Whatever You Like" hangs on by a thread this week.
Contenders:"Lost" finally falls off, leaving the A7X chart kings a quartet now. The other three U2 songs suffer, due to not listening to the album in weeks. "We Made You" debuts not so much because it's a really good song, but because
Relapse is shockingly good, and pulls it up by comparison. Based on "We Made You" and "Crack a Bottle," which the rest of the album is absolutely nothing like, I was expecting a dud. It's really uncomfortable listening and I must get it tomorrow if I run out of time today. "Germany" is the brand new Bleeding Through video. It's not memorable enough to last on my chart. I don't expect "Armageddon" to last more than a couple of weeks, either. The bottom finally falls out from under "The Sound of Truth," as expected, and "Get on Your Boots." Not sure if "Two Weeks" will recover and make another run. Pretty sure "I Do Not Hook Up" and "You Found Me" are done. Maybe "Funny the Way It Is," too. Thanks for reading.
