Okay, this was a bitch to do when I did it. For one thing this reflects what I felt at the time. I had a two-month period during that year where I heard no music and so naturally the thing has an arbitrary feel but I think it's highly reflective of what I felt that year.
Keep in mind that TVOTR and Shiny Toy Guns did not enter my collection this particular year. However if I could tack in the former's songs in inclusion of the '07 chart there was no reason I couldn't have belatedly thrown in my Thrice tracks, and besides if I had only known all along...
2006 songs:
01. Thrice - "Red Sky"
(My 50-position chart ended in March the week that this song was #3 and rising (ATL's peak, interesting enough). Would've been #1 if it continued I believe. But with my sustained interest and eventual purchase of Vheissu this was what I felt should be #1 by all means for '06. Oh, Island was an epic fail when it came to radio promotion of their singles. Or maybe the PD's just sucked. On the good side the band seem to like what they're now and they make creatively intriguing music still.)
02. Depeche Mode - "Precious" (#100 of 2005)
(By far my favorite DM's songs in this decade, Playing the Angel escalated a respect I'd already had for the band. This song spent 7 weeks at #1 before my chart ended. It is such a beautiful song and shows that they're just as sharp as they'd ever been.)
03. Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"
04. Kanye West f/ Lupe Fiasco “Touch the Sky”
05. Lupe Fiasco “Kick, Push”
(Ha, look at that! 3/5 top songs aren't really that rock!)
06. Editors - "Blood"
(I wish this would've been the main U.S. single. It sounds less like an Interpol knockoff than "Munich" and is moving.)
07. Thrice - "Image of the Invisible"
(This song never really left by the time my chart first ended. In fact it had over 20 weeks on at #24. Quite an accomplishment and I guess my interest never died. Awkwardly missed my top 100 in 2005. Maybe I'm compensating.)
08. Gorillaz f/ Shaun Ryder - "Dare"
09. The White Stripes - "The Denial Twist"
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Dani California"
11. Tool - "Vicarious"
12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Gold Lion"
(Glad they sort of did something nationally this time around.)
13. Depeche Mode “Suffer Well”
(Cool that a Gahan-penned DM tune got just inside the top 40 on alternative.)
14. She Wants Revenge “Tear You Apart”
15. Coldplay - "Talk"
16. Fall Out Boy - "Dance, Dance"
17. Weezer - "Perfect Situation" (#67 of 2005)
18. Hot Hot Heat “Running Out of Time” (#97 of 2005)
19. The Fray “Over My Head (Cable Car)”
20. Justin Timberlake f/ Timbaland - "SexyBack"
(Totally intrigued me the relative curveball taken here. From here I started to really appreciate his songs.)
21. HIM - "Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly"
22. Avenged Sevenfold - "Beast and the Harlot"
23. AFI - "Miss Murder"
(You might be questioning me why this is as low as it is. That's because I didn't really "get" it until about a couple months of hearing it, which was when it wasn't really as fresh anymore.)
24. Thrice - "Atlantic"
25. Thrice - "The Earth Will Shake"
(These two Vheissu album cuts struck me immediately. No surprise that I've pretty much heard them all each time out seeing them live.)
26. She Wants Revenge - "These Things"
27. Nine Inch Nails - "Every Day Is Exactly the Same"
28. The Fray - "How to Save a Life"
29. De/Vision - "The End"
30. Death Cab for Cutie - "I Will Follow You Into the Dark"
(For some reason I really took to this one.)
31. System of a Down - "Hypnotize"
(I guess I didn't come full circle until '06, since that's when it peaked for me and I didn't see it on my '05 chart.)
32. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Tell Me Baby"
33. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Desecration Smile" (#51 of 2007)
(Wouldn't have minded if this had been a single from the album. Loved it from the first listen.)
34. Corinne Bailey Rae - "Put Your Records On"
(At first she was just another acclaimed up-and-comer for me. But she easily grew on me not much longer.)
35. Depeche Mode - "Lilian"
(Too bad it's just a second-billed A-side in Europe. Probably the catchiest song on the album.)
36. Death Cab for Cutie - "Crooked Teeth"
(In spite what I say about DCFC/Ben Gibbard I have to admit I liked the Plans singles just fine. Oh, "SMB" was #46 of 2005. BTW I do like these two more.)
37. Panic! at the Disco - "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage"
38. Foo Fighters "No Way Back"
39. The Strokes “Heart in a Cage”
40. Thrice - "Like Moths to Flame"
41. Thrice - "Hold Fast Hope”
42. The Strokes - "Juicebox"
43. Depeche Mode - "The Darkest Star"
44. Kanye West f/ Adam Levine - "Heard ‘Em Say"[/b]
(Screwed over by the '05-'06 overlap, slightly. If it couldn't make the top 100 of last year though then the latter year would be closer to the actual rank.)
45. The Raconteurs - "Steady, As She Goes"
46. Pearl Jam - "Life Wasted"
(I thought "Worldwide Suicide" was trash but that this was great.)
47. Weezer - "This Is Such a Pity"
48. Muse - "Starlight" (#8 of 2007)
(This is what actually heightened my interest in the album.)
49. Muse - "Knights of Cydonia"
50. Tool - "The Pot" (#37 of 2007)
51. Blue October - "Into the Ocean"
52. 30 Seconds to Mars - "The Kill"
53. Editors - "Munich"
54. T.I. - "What You Know"
55. System of a Down - "Kill Rock N’ Roll"
56. Nelly Furtado f/ Timbaland “Promiscuous”
57. Thrice - "Stare at the Sun"
(I know, we're looking 2003/4. But I didn't get to listen to the f***ing song when it was out! Hell, my Thrice fandom would've blossomed if I got to hear this, no doubt. And before the much-represented album here this was by far the finest song they'd ever done. Using personal preference this would be top five.)
58. AFI - "Love Like Winter"
(I don't know why I didn't include this in my top 20 for 2007; that seems wrong in retrospect.)
59. Wolfmother - "Woman"
60. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Cheated Hearts"
(Song nearly made the chart IIRC. I liked it more than "GL" and thought it showed the album's spirit quite well.)
61. My Chemical Romance - "Welcome to the Black Parade" (#71 of 2007)
62. LCD Soundsystem - "Tribulations"
63. She Wants Revenge - "Out of Control"
64. Busta Rhymes - "Touch It"
65. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club "Shuffle Your Feet"
66. Kanye West & Paul Wall f/ GLC [and T.I & Tony Williams] "Drive Slow/(Remix)"
67. Lupe Fiasco - "I Gotcha"
68. Lupe Fiasco f/ Jill Scott - "Daydreamin’"
(Too bad the promotion was off and the album got delayed so much. )
69. Sleater-Kinney - "Jumpers"
70. Placebo - "Song to Say Goodbye"
(I wasn't expecting the U.S. to kinda-sorta pick up on them, so this is here higher than "Infra-Red" by far.)
71. Thom Yorke - "Harrowdown Hill"
72. Thom Yorke - "Black Swan"
73. Panic! at the Disco - "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
74. Avenged Sevenfold - "Bat Country" (#87 of 2005)
75. Prince - "Black Sweat"
76. OK Go - "Here It Goes Again"
77. The Flaming Lips - "The W.A.N.D."
78. Madonna - "Sorry"
79. The Arctic Monkeys - "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor"
80. Rise Against - "Ready to Fall"
81. Johnny Cash - "God’s Gonna Cut You Down"
82. Hard-Fi - "Cash Machine"
83. Snow Patrol - "Chasing Cars"
84. System of a Down - "Question!" (#3 of 2005)
85. Keane - "Is It Any Wonder"
86. Justin Timberlake f/ T.I. - "My Love"
87. Thrice - "Between the End and Where We Lie"
88. System of a Down - "Lonely Day"
89. De/Vision - "No Tomorrow"
90. K.T. Tunstall - "Suddenly I See"
91. The Killers - "When You Were Young"
92. Blue October - "Hate Me"
93. 10 Years - "Wasteland"
94. Refused - "Refused Are f***ing Dead"
(This song just totally blew me away when I got the chance to hear it, even if it's from 1998. Good music is just good music, no disputing that)
95. Avenged Sevenfold - "Seize the Day"
96. The Raconteurs - "Level"
97. Deftones - "Hole in the Earth" (#92 of 2007)
98. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Devil’s Waitin’"
99. Sean Paul "Temperature"
100. Alkaline Trio - "Burn"
101. Depeche Mode - "A Pain That I'm Used To"
102. Justin Timberlake - "What Goes Around... Comes Around" (#60 of 2007)
103. Thrice - "Of Dust and Nations"
104. Thrice - "Music Box"
(But now this is easily my favorite album cut from the album. For me stuff like that's always a sign of an incredible record.)
105. We Are Scientists - "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt"
106. Thom Yorke - "The Eraser"
107. Thrice - "For Miles"
108. Thrice - "Stand and Feel Your Worth"
109. Shiny Toy Guns - "Le Disko" (#79 of 2007)
110. Taking Back Sunday - "MakeDamnSure"
Keep in mind that TVOTR and Shiny Toy Guns did not enter my collection this particular year. However if I could tack in the former's songs in inclusion of the '07 chart there was no reason I couldn't have belatedly thrown in my Thrice tracks, and besides if I had only known all along...
