I was trying to find the appropriate place to post this, but clearly it was necessary to clarify the subject line, as this is not a song that is going for adds anywhere.
Anyway, at work the other night, Craig Ferguson was in town, and I believe, for the first time ever, our house music was the Begin to Hope disc by Band of Horses. (I could tell because "Is There a Ghost" was the first song and everything after it sounded like the same band.) Anyway, a few songs in, I heard this gorgeous ballad that I really liked. Nothing else stuck out to me while I was ushering, but if nothing else, I knew I really wanted that one song. I finally remembered to stream clips from the album just now and it turns out the song was "Detlef Schrempf," a song ponderously named after the former NBA basketball player. His career took off back when I was still subscribing to Sports Illustrated for Kids in the early '90s (and still gave a damn about sports other than baseball), so I totally remember a name like that, if not what he looked like or who he played for at the time.
But here's an eerie twist to that story. The very next night at work, Frank Caliendo came through, and he has a routine where he does an impression of Bill Walton, another former basketball player (a generation earlier than Schrempf) and current sportscaster. Anyway, a line in Caliendo's impression of Walton goes, "Has there ever been a better player than Detlef Schrempf?" And Frank, in his own voice says, "Well yeah, Bill, like 600 guys..." and continues on with the story.
That's messed up. [/the hypnotherapist from Office Space.]

It had me laughing for so long when I'd first seen it, since Bill Walton really is that hyperbolic in his commentary (exhibit A). But I wouldn't have been able to identify the impersonator's name until I'd read this. And I was going to make a mention of the Bill Walton impersonation in here whether Nick already had or not. .

Yeah, this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I really don't understand where the title came from though. Great album overall, but this song's the best.

Well, Schrempf did play for the Seattle SuperSonics for six years, which is were these guys are from. It's easily one of the best NBA names ever, along with, off the top of my head, World B. Free, Arvydas Sabonis, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and most recently, Von Wafer.
