"Paralyzer" is still in the top ten? LOL. That's GOT to be a record breaker already and probably will be hard to, but then people will payola a new band (which this isn't) and get a song heard until people are finally familiar enough to enjoy it, too. It's decent but should have gone away a LONG TIME ago. At least three months ago if you ask me.
I don't really have much to say about the rest. I wonder if SSPU are really going to follow up "Twinkles" with "Little Lover's So Polite." I've seen places that assume so. I can't wait for the next record, which supposedly is being recorded when they finish touring. I hope to see them next time around.
I've got a co-worker who's into the Spill Canvas and has a t-shirt of theirs. I somehow expect them to have an emo-ish edge but that might not be a bad thing.

9 8 FINGER ELEVEN Paralyzer 1247 1141 106 7.544 +106? Are you kidding me?? Are you kidding me! This marks one full year for "Paralyzer" on the chart. I don't see any reason why it won't last another 7 weeks and break the longevity record set only a year ago, mind you, by the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus' "Face Down." And "The Good Left Undone" makes the Top 10 in its 34th week on the chart? What's that all about? As far as I can tell, my station stopped playing it 2-3 months ago.

I'm surprised no one else has pointed out Puddle of Mudd's ascend into top 20. Looks like a pretty clear path to the top 10 too if they can keep the gains up a few more weeks. 34 weeks for "The Good Left Undone"? That means 2 of the top 8 greatest gainers have been on for over 30 weeks.

I'm surprised no one else has pointed out Puddle of Mudd's ascend into top 20. Oh, I noticed. I'm just ignoring it and hoping that s***ty song will go away as soon as possible. (And at this point the band can go ahead and pack it in, too, as far as I'm concerned, because they're clearly incapable of making a single I'll like ever again.)

[Steps up onto soapbox] *ahem* Okay, I know the chart's just gonna get updated again tonight, but I just now finally caught up again with my personal Alternative chart records. First off, "The Running Free" should've fallen recurrent this week and "The Underdog" (which I never even heard mind you, after Mediabase has been charting it for half a year) should've fallen recurrent on the December 30th chart. (And for the record, "Rise Today" should've gone recurrent last week...Also, "Everything's Magic" debuted the same week as "Big Casino," both songs fell out of the Top 20 simultaneously, yet "Magic" got an extra week. : The number of songs charting over 20 and even 30 weeks is appalling: Paralyzer: 53 weeks Never Too Late: 37 weeks Bleed It Out: 36 weeks The Good Left Undone: 35 weeks I Get It: 32 weeks Well Thought Out Twinkles: 30 weeks The Pretender: 27 weeks Becoming the Bull: 27 weeks Fake It: 23 weeks Believe: 22 weeks Empty Walls: 21 weeks Ten Ton Brick: 20 weeks Furthermore: 1-10:"Fake It" logging 6 weeks (that's already a third of what "The Pretender" did) at #1 is bulls***, especially since "Shadow of the Day" only logged one week at #2. After eighteen weeks (just over a third of an entire year) at #1, "The Pretender" is still the fourth most played current song on Alternative radio. "Paralyzer" is still the tenth most played song on Alternative radio. How can "The Good Left Undone" (which isn't as good as, and is similar enough already to, "Prayer of the Refugee") be doing so well inside the Top 20 this year (almost Top 5) after already spending well over half a year on the chart? Un-f***ing-believable. At least it's a good band, though... Mystified at how relatively easily "Bodysnatchers" has made the Top 10. (Took 16 weeks, though.) 11-20:I can't believe "Believe" is holding so strong just outside the Top 10, now in its 22nd week. That song isn't even that good. "An Honest Mistake" beats the snot out of this song after school at 3:15 by the willow tree. For some reason "Never Too Late" logging 37 weeks (and counting) isn't as obnoxious as "Pain" spending about the same time on the chart. Maybe because I don't hear it on my Alternative station anymore and it was teh superior to "Pain" in the first place. "Psycho" is so sing-songy and especially obnoxious, because it sounds like such a ridiculously easy song to learn, and tiresome post-grunge bands shouldn't be allowed to get away with that. "Bleed It Out" is still the 16th most played current song on Alternative radio. Their follow-up song has already spent 19 weeks on and peaked already. (And at #2. Certainly nothing to sneeze at and by no means overshadowed the way "Falling On," in its 14th week, has been all this time by "Paralyer.") 21-30:"Shadowplay," now in its fourth, non-consecutive week at #21, just can't seem to break into the Top 20. Surprised, at this point, that "Rainy Monday" is still struggling to get there. Bafflingly, yet mercifully, I've been spared "Until the End" on my radio dial. Y'know...big Breaking Benjamin fans around here and all... 31-40:Tell me how something that Nikki Sixx is personally a part of can be played on Alternative radio and make it, thus far, up to #33 in 8 weeks. This pisses me off to no end, but it looks like "Ten Ton Brick" (with no follow-up single in sight, of course) has a bullet that's healthier than ever, meaning that it will continue to chart tonight, in its 21st week. I so want to move it to recurrent. Lose spins, motherf***er, I dare you. I double-dare you. 41-50:So [Silverchair's American record company], how's that whole re-release-"The Greatest View"-because-the-U.S.-didn't-get-to-appreciate-it thing going? #37? On life support basically, after 8 weeks? Happy now? Getting what you wanted out of it? What the f*** happened to "Map of the Problematique"? As soon as it makes the Top 50, everybody just let it go. It's like all the PD/MD's are saying "Okay, we're done now. That was good enough." (I peeked and it's almost gone.) (Might as well)/Haven't heard: Radiohead "Bodysnatchers" (though I have the album)Jack Johnson "If I Had Eyes" Foxboro Hot Tubs "Mother Mary" The Killers "Shadowplay" (I've only spun it once. My station has chosen to play "Tranquilize" instead.)Ashes Divide "The Stone" (But my station is playing it and it's still so new. I've caught a couple pieces of it. And actually I have the mp3. )Shiny Toy Guns "Rainy Monday" (Once on the radio, on the station that doesn't have its former strength anymore. I have the album's mp3s, though.)Breaking Benjamin "Until the End" (I could use a break from them)Rogue Wave "Lake Michigan" Atreyu "Falling Down" (But obviously I own the album. My station is playing it apparently, and it's still so new.)The White Stripes "Conquest" (On the radio)Panic at the Disco "Nine in the Afternoon" (But I've listened to my mp3 once.)Sixx: A.M. "Life Is Beautiful" Korn "Hold On" (On the radio)Spoon "Don't You Evah" (Or "The Underdog," for that matter.)MGMT "Time to Pretend" Band of Horses "Is There a Ghost" (I've listened to my mp3 once or twice.)Theory of a Deadman "So Happy" Silverchair "The Greatest View" Armor for Sleep "Hold the Door" Vampire Weekend "A-Punk" Louis XIV "Air Traffic Control" The Spill Canvas "All Over You" Say Anything "Baby Girl, I'm a Blur" I've had enough. I'm fed up. This is supposed to be my favorite radio format, but I'm not hearing the songs I should be. Apparently, my station plays more newer music in the evenings, but that's exactly the time I don't listen, whether it be because of work or because I'm doing stuff. Even when I'm home, I don't have any desire to listen to the radio in the evenings. And unfortunately, Out of Order runs on Sunday mornings and its second hour overlaps with the first of AT40. And Saturday nights I'm always working and not getting home until usually 1 AM or later. It's bad enough shorting myself sleep just to wake up for AT40. Regardless, I'm gonna start tracking down streams or downloads of all the songs in the Top 50 I haven't heard every week, returning to ones I want to revisit. Or, better yet, I'll make time to track down the songs and play them back as if I were listening to the chart counted down. (I'd omit* all the songs I'm sick of, though.) No more of this bulls***, especially since receiving my other Alternative station in my home is absolutely hopeless at this point. (And is bad enough trying to receive within the city limits anymore, either. ) [Steps down from soapbox] *EDIT: I had accidentally omitted the word "omit." How awesome is that.

I think the countless songs sticking around forever is something that's here to stay, too. The labels could whine about illegal downloads killing record sales until their face turns green, but they're the ones out there pushing singles (and not albums) for this long. I don't even notice most of these. I knew "Paralyzer", obviously, I knew "The Good Left Undone" only because I was skimming old charts and noticing it was debuting all the way back in June. Others I just don't notice because I stop paying attention. If you'd ask me to guess how many weeks "10 Ton Brick" had, I'd have said about 8, and I still only noticed that at all because it's one of the songs Nick gave an F[/color] to. And I can't believe it's been 32 weeks already for "I Get It". It's not just currents, either. "Icky Thump" would have been at #20 last week with a get-out-of-jail-free card. "Breath" would be #21 this week. It's pitiful and I can't say it's any better than having Nirvana songs would-being in the top 50. Seether does not feel like a chart-topping band, and neither does their song. The more I hear "Fake It", the more I think it's a joke. More on "The Good Left Undone"; Rise Against should, by now, not be a band that needs 30 weeks to get a single into the top 10. Backing its way into the top 10, finally, is "Believe". I bet it takes a spill now that its label has bought what it probably wanted. "Psycho" still has zero support from both Toledo and Detroit. I've never heard the song, but still: . "Well Thought Out Twinkles" is finally at rest on the recurrent list, but it's mind-bogglingly impressive how well their two singles held up in this payola era against the big-name labels when they're on Dangerbird Records. There goes "Falling Down", looking like it's gonna smash "Becoming the Bull"'s high watermark. Haven't heard it yet, but Toledo has added it (after their cold-shouldering of "BtB"), and Detroit hasn't (after they were the ones on "BtB" and "Ex's and Oh's" in '06). I'm torn between saying "Interesting" or " ". There; I've said both. I hope it does well enough for me to stop confusing it with "Falling On", which has fallen off this week. "The Underdog" is still not recurrent. It shouldn't be holding up this well with another song of theirs on the chart that has already outpeaked it. If they consolidated their airplay then maybe I'd actually have taken notice. As for "Map Of The Problematique", the reason for its spin decrease is because it has no adds and KROQ laid off half its plays. I made a comment on Pulse about KROQ that they're never there for you when you need them the most. I try not to follow KROQ because they do s*** like this all the time. Look at "Empty Walls" rising to the top of their playlist, now. . Where were they when Serj could have been knocking Seether out from #1. Haven't heard, or just need to catch up on (and this list is the longest it has been since the nineties, by far): "Bodysnatchers" (if I heard it I wouldn't know if it's this or "All I Need".) "Psycho" "If I Had Eyes" (nfe)"Mother Mary" "Always Be" (nfe, but what the hell is it doing with no red triangle to the left of it?)"Nine In The Afternoon" "The Stone" "My World" "Until The End" "Riot" "Sky Is Over" (nfe)"Lake Michigan" "Conquest" "Life Is Beautiful" "Ten Ton Brick" "Hold On" "Don't You Evah" "Sorry" (nfe)"Time To Pretend" (nfe)"Run" "A-Punk" "Hold The Door" "Stop!" "Is There A Ghost" (nfe)"I'm Not Jesus" (nfe. Featuring Corey Taylor; that explains this one.)"I'll Keep Your Memories Vague" "Amen" (nfe)"Beautiful"

"Paralyzer" was first played on a radio station in November 2006. This is February 2008. Why the hell is it still in the top 10?

"Bodysnatchers" (if I heard it I wouldn't know if it's this or "All I Need".) Or maybe it's worse than that. On my way to work this morning I had it on 106.5 of Toledo, who was playing a song that was obviously Radiohead that sounded vaguely familiar, so I'm just assuming it's "Bodysnatchers" because it's the one I know they play. The song ended and since I didn't need to listen to "Sex Type Thing" for the 80 trillionth time, I switched to 89x and they were right on queue playing "All I Need". So I'm like, OK, it didn't take long to get that straightened out. Until on my way home with 106.5 again, it's more Radiohead. This time it actually was "Bodysnatchers". Then it killed me the rest of the way home to figure out what that other song was from earlier. Turns out it was "Paranoid Android". 9 years of following this radio format and I've never heard that on the radio anywhere! I just can't believe I heard three consecutive Radiohead tracks on the radio that weren't "Creep".

Wait just a f***ing minute now. Just when did Mediabase's Alternative chart start using the CHR/Pop 20 weeks inside the Top 40 and below #20 rule?!?!?!?! Because that's exactly what's happened. I could have sworn we'd tried to explain it that way before and it didn't match up, so I just kept "correcting" their charts myself as I caught up. Sure this doesn't explain their premature recurrents (which they haven't done lately), but this totally explains presumably everything dating at least all the way back to Daughtry's "It's Not Over." Yes, it explains why "The Underdog" should finally go recurrent next week. It explains why "Everything's Magic" stayed on one week longer than "Big Casino" It explains why "You Don't Know What Love Is" stayed on a few extra weeks. And I didn't look into "The Running Free" or "Rise Today," but I'm sure their stories check out, too. Motherf***er! Do you have any idea how time consuming it will be for me to figure out exactly when the rule was changed and then go back and edit all my charts and each affected song's running week tally? God- dammit.

It looks as if the Alternative Top 50 adopted the Pop Top 50 recurrent rule all the way back at the end of October 2006, which is a mere month-plus after the Pop chart rule was changed. How did I not pick up on this? Maybe because they were prematurely moving some songs recurrent for a little while there. They were taking songs off early, why wouldn't I continue to believe they were leaving songs on arbitrarily after their 20th weeks?
Do you have any idea how many charts this f***s up for me.
It f***s up LW columns, TW columns, real-time chart peaks, weeks on chart, not to mention debut and drop weeks.
At this point, I don't know what will be easiest: scanning my chart with a fine-tooth comb, fixing errors as compared to all the weekly charts in this topic, just starting over, or fixing them one song (chart run) at a time.
All I know is that I am very...very...pissed off.
Back to page one now, as I listen to AT40, for what? Probably the next 2+ months!
f*** my life... [/TJ's Liquor employee in Superbad]

OK, I made it through the end of January '07 this morning. This may go a little quicker than I thought.
I'll have to freeze progress next weekend, though, because I plan to be hung over at my (fading) crush's house come Sunday morning. (And next weekend Janet Jackson co-hosts, so unfortunately I'll have to miss that.)

I can't possibly be the only one who thinks that "Fake It" is Seether's worst single yet, and for it to be #1 for so long is sad. It got the passing grade with me because I didn't pay attention by then. I finally did and I can't believe I gave it over a D-. I hope the new single doesn't suck as much and I hope that single takes away many of "Fake It"'s spins. "Psycho" does not deserve to be reaching the top ten. Theory in the top thirty is no better. And "Sorry" is Hinder; a pop crossover already! Gawd, no wonder I stopped listening to the radio.... I'm glad that R.E.M. are doing pretty well so far and the B-52's are in the top 60, though. That's awesome. And seeing Against Me!'s new single in print is nice; both the artist and title ending with the exclamation mark. And I don't mind it in their name because unlike Panic it was not in the middle of the band name. It's also cool to see Ashes Divide which I'm looking forward to hearing and that Armor for Sleep finally made the chart. (Although once I made a joke about AFS to a friend that they sounded like a band named after a song, only to later learn they do have a song called "Armor for Sleep"! ).

It got the passing grade with me because I didn't pay attention by then. I finally did and I can't believe I gave it over a D-. "Fake It" isn't my least favourite Seether single (that goes to either "Fine Again" or "Truth") but having this many weeks at #1 is just pathetic. I hope the new single doesn't suck as much and I hope that single takes away many of "Fake It"'s spins. "Rise Above This" doesn't sound like a song that'll do much, unfortunately. "Psycho" does not deserve to be reaching the top ten. Theory in the top thirty is no better. And "Sorry" is Hinder; a pop crossover already! Gawd, no wonder I stopped listening to the radio.... Don't forget Sixx A.M. Oh, and "Bleed It Out" is still in the top 20 after releasing two followup singles. And seeing Against Me!'s new single in print is nice; both the artist and title ending with the exclamation mark. Heh, glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked cool. It's also cool to see Ashes Divide which I'm looking forward to hearing and that Armor for Sleep finally made the chart. (Although once I made a joke about AFS to a friend that they sounded like a band named after a song, only to later learn they do have a song called "Armor for Sleep"! ). Too bad that Armor for Sleep song sounds so whiny in the beginning, or I'd probably listen to it a lot more. It also sounds like movie music to me; maybe because it's so dramatic.

I hope the new single doesn't suck as much and I hope that single takes away many of "Fake It"'s spins. "Fine Again" and "Driven Under" were solid songs. Then I'd pick "Broken," and then "Fake It." "Truth" is OK, but "Remedy" is mediocre, "Rise Above This" is bland, "The Gift" is flat-out boring and "Gasoline" sucks. Theory in the top thirty is no better. And "Sorry" is Hinder; a pop crossover already! I heard that new ToaD song the other night and god that song blows. Not nearly as bad as "No Surprise," but it's generic as all get-out. Actually "Sorry" hit the Pop chart first, Kirk. I'm glad that R.E.M. are doing pretty well so far and the B-52's are in the top 60, though. I'm surprised that R.E.M. are doing so well initially because their last time around didn't do too well and, from one listen anyway, the song didn't really impress me. Even if the B-52's don't make the Top 50, I'm impressed they've already come this far.

I just can't believe ToaD are on their third album now and they're still being given hits. That means, like, their existence should be acknowledged. So I'll go ahead and acknowledge them as the most incompetent band of the '00s. Sadly, "So Happy" is greatness compared to "No Surprise", "Nothing Could Come Between Us", and "Make Up Your Mind", but it still sounds a lot like "Remedy" from Seether. How bad can it be to fall a whole album behind Seether.

I heard that Sixx A.M. record on the radio and I was like, "Here we go...", but thought it was actually pretty decent. Kind of like if Saliva was at their best.
It's awesome that they had the chance to add that about-to-be-top-ten Puddle of Mudd record, but passed and decided to go with Sixx A.M. instead (I'm so loving every minute of that PoM cold shoulder because I just have the feeling it won't last forever.)

Of course "Paralyzer"'s departure from the top ten after 55 years has to come at the expense of PoM's return to the top ten. Mother f***er. Wesley was dragged off the stage a drunken mess four years ago, right here in Toledo, and that should have been the end of Puddle of Mudd. That should've been the f***ing end. And here they are back with a top ten record as if that never even f***ing happened. People will do anything for a payola check. [angry face].

I'll add a third tear drop for "Rainy Monday", and "Paralyzer" still has lots of time to catch "Bodysnatchers" for #8, the way it's been going.
If I played baseball, I'd be like, "f*** steroids and HGH, I want some of what that Jack Johnson is on". I mean, first the #1 album, and now the song's at #11 and +188, and it might even get to #8 before "Paralyzer" does. But I'm sure "Paralyzer" will be back to +188 before too long anyway, so that's nothing to get too excited about.
Seriously, all the s*** "Paralyzer" has done over the past 55 years devalues every chart achievement that's ever taken place, and because of that, I'm actually losing interest in the chart itself. All because of this one f***ing song.

Not like it makes much difference at this point, but since I didn't realize the chart had modified its recurrent rule so long ago, "Paralyzer" has actually spent one less week on the chart. Tonight will be week number 56. 3 more weeks now until it breaks "Face Down"'s record.
UPDATE: My Alternative charts are fixed through April now. In theory, I'll get another 3 months' worth done next weekend, so that'll take me through July. I won't get a chance to update the following week because I'll be back home that Sunday morning. The 23rd should take me through October, the 30th should take me through January, and hopefully by the first Sunday morning in April, I'll be all caught up again.

I thought Alternative was over everyone in the top 3 as of four years ago. Nobody I know cares about any of them. I go to the concerts and hang around fans of this genre and look at the magazine covers and those bands had been "uncool" for so long that it's not even cool anymore to make fun of them. I was in a Hot Topic once and a kid with his mom went up and asked if they had any Evans Blue shirts and the employee could only laugh. He tried not to, but failed. At any rate, it was one thing for these bands to be a minor nuisance to the charts as they have over the past few years, but why the f*** are these bands becoming the most dominant force Alternative music has right now.
Atreyu has to do it with the most un-Atreyu like song they've ever recorded, so that's not even much to get excited about.
I'll never be able to explain Jack Johnson, but I'm cool with it and I'll roll with it to the very end.
You know Pennywise will only get West Coast airplay, so that won't last.
+106 for "Paralyzer". Didn't I just call it?
You know R.E.M.'s engine is gonna sputter sooner than it should, but I'll at least give 'em that I thought it'd have happened by now.
I was initially shocked at the Black Keys being on here, until I looked into it and noticed half of those plays coming from S-021 (the Sirius station). I'll still pull for 'em though; they're different, and they're from Akron, so that's cool.
I wouldn't mind Vampire Weekend getting to about #26 or so. Song's alright; it's a good change-of-pace record.
"Stop!" had actually lost its bullet during last week, so it's good to see the good payola showing its face here.
