Last night I got to see Assemblage 23. Knowing similar clubs, I sort of figured the headlining artist wouldn't come on until after midnight, which happened.
There was this industrial act that were halfway into playing when I first arrived. Then Angel Theory came in, a group who scraped my personal chart in 2004 (and the cool thing is that they performed that song). They were generally good.
Well, I mostly just know the Meta album from Assemblage. From that they did a "remix" of "Sorry" as well as "Binary" and "Damaged." ("Madman's Dream" was listed from last.fm's San Francisco date, but wasn't played here). They also did "Let the Wind Erase Me," main single from Storm, and they also played "Alive" from the new album.
I don't really know a lot of stuff by title since the songs are primarily one-word titles, just like all 6 of their album titles. And I didn't know anything of their first 3 albums when I came (but he announced this song called "Divide" that made me a bit interested).
I got to meet Tom Shear and he was a very cool guy.

Got to see the Thirty Seconds To Mars show in Detroit last night. MUTEMATH decided to ditch the show at the last minute to travel to California to play at Coachella. So they get tons of free publicity in the region without having to give anything in return. The Neon Trees were bumped up to primary opener; they were annoying and had the most pretentious haircuts I've ever seen in a band, and it ultimately felt like they played longer than 30 eventually did.
30stm setlist:
Night of the hunter Attack Escape From yesterday A beautiful lie This is war/100 suns The fantasy L490 [Jared teleports to center of crowd] Hurricane (acoustic) A brand new name (acoustic) The kill (acoustic, plugged with return to stage) Closer to the edge Stranger in a strange land
Encore Agonizing 25 minute Twitter & stage prep break (I kid you not): Kings and queens

Trying like hell to avert my eyes from the setlist (So I saw the first and last songs: I probably could've guessed those two anyway.)
Anyway, please clarify the Twitter aspect of the break. I dread that your show's 25 minute wait will be par for the tour.

Trying like hell to avert my eyes from the setlist (So I saw the first and last songs: I probably could've guessed those two anyway.) Anyway, please clarify the Twitter aspect of the break. I dread that your show's 25 minute wait will be par for the tour. After the intermission, Jared comes out, about ready to start playing, but says "Oh wait, first we'll do one of our nightly rituals...you're about to be Twittered". Then came about 5 minutes of small talk and audience feedback on what exactly he should post. Finally he handed the mic to one person who promptly screamed "'Sup, bitches!". I was informed that's a catch phrase commonly used by 89x's morning show hosts, so that could have very well been a plant saying that. Jared modified it to "'Sup, bitches! You wish you could be here!", and slooooowly typed it out, sent it, and made a buildup out of it as it was sending ("19%!!!! 38%!!!!"). It all took roughly 12½ minutes. Then came the preparation routine for the last song, which I don't need to spoil, but it took about the same amount of time. Actually, I don't have any problem with what they did here at all, except that it was following up 12½ minutes of already dead air with 12½ more, when that time could have been just as well spent on 3-4 more songs, or getting off the stage sooner so that we could have beaten the adjacent Opera House traffic.

I have a half-hearted interest in both bands. I liked Say Anything a bit better, but overall, a pretty mediocre night. I don't know how anyone can proudly call themselves an Angels & Airwaves fan, though, after seeing them again for the third time. (Why the f*** did Atom Willard quit Social Distortion to devote himself to AVA full-time?)
For the record, Max Bemis announced the title of every song, but I still had to jot down some lyrics from "Mara and Me," because that's such an unusual name, I didn't understand what he was saying except for "me."
And for AVA, all I knew by name were the 4 singles they played, plus "It Hurts" (and the Love intro). I had to jot down lyrics to all the other songs and look 'em up just now.
Say Anything:
01. Hate Everyone 02. Shiksa (Girlfriend) 03. Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too 04. No Soul 05. Woe 06. Mara and Me 07. Do Better 08. Every Man Has a Molly 09. Eloise 10. Alive with the Glory of Love
Angels & Airwaves:
01. Et Ducit Mundum Per Luce 02. It Hurts 03. Young London 04. Hallucinations 05. Everything's Magic 06. Lifeline 07. Call to Arms 08. Shove 09. Love Like Rockets 10. The Adventure 11. The Flight of Apollo 12. The Moon-Atomic (...Fragments and Fictions) 13. Epic Holiday 14. Secret Crowds
Encore: 15. Breathe 16. The War

NOFX:
01. Dinosaurs Will Die (from Pump Up the Valuum) 02. Perfect Government (from Punk in Drublic) 03. We Called It America (from Coaster) 04. Seeing Double at the Triple Rock (from Wolves in Wolves' Clothing) 05. Leave It Alone (from Punk in Drublic) 06. The Decline* (from The Decline EP) 07. Reeko (from Punk in Drublic) 08. Mattersville (from The War on Errorism) 09. Radio (Rancid cover from BYO Split Series, Volume III [with Rancid]) 10. "f*** the Kids"** (from f*** the Kids 7" EP) 11. Linoleum (from Punk in Drublic) 12. Arming the Proletariat with Potato Guns (from the March 2005 7" in their 7" of the month club series) 13. The Separation of Church and Skate (from The War on Errorism) 14. Franco Un-American (from The War on Errorism) 15. Eat the Meek (from So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes) 16. Murder the Government (from So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes) 17. The Brews (from Punk in Drublic)
Encore: 18. The Quitter (from Coaster) 19. My Orphan Year (from Coaster) 20. Bob (from White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean) 21. Theme from a NOFX Album (from Pump Up the Valuum)
* The Decline EP consists of just the title track, which is 18 minutes long. I had 10 years to listen to the song, but never did, effectively making this show the first time I'd ever heard it. I felt like a total jackass that this song, which should've been a once-in-a-lifetime glorious treat, was wasted on me. As soon as Fat Mike announced it as an 18-minute long song, I immediately knew what it was and said "f*** me!" to myself.
** Apparently our message board is OK spelling out the f-word if it's italicized or has a quotation mark right next to it. But leave it standing alone, then it has to be censored, which makes no sense. Hence, the quotation marks around the song title.

30 Seconds to Mars:
01. Escape 02. Night of the Hunter 03. Attack 04. Vox Populi 05. From Yesterday 06. Search and Destroy 07. This Is War 08. 100 Suns [Jared, solo] 09. L490 [band minus Jared, as he re-enters the venue through the front and sets up on a table or platform next to the soundboard] 10a. Capricorn, b. Buddha for Mary, c. Oblivion, d. Echelon, e. Bad Romance [acoustic snippets] 11. The Kill [solo acoustic first half, full band second half as Jared wades into the crowd] 12. Closer to the Edge 13. Hurricane [Jared solo, truncated for time before the full band part] 14a. Buddha for Mary, b. Capricorn, c. A Beautiful Lie, d. 93 Million Miles (riff) [snippets, as they are short on time] 15. Kings and Queens [essentially the encore, though they only left the stage for 30 seconds or so]
Steve, I'm curious: Any clue why they would play "Escape" after "Night of the Hunter" (and another song!) at your show?
Also, did you copy the bulk of your setlist from another source? Just curious why only the first letter of each song is capitalized and why you would write "A Brand New Name" instead of "Capricorn."
After reading about your encore, I was pleasantly surprised that they were playing and enjoying themselves so much in St. Louis that they were actually short on time and not only did they not waste time with any Twitter crap, they barely even left the stage in the first place and "Kings and Queens" actually spilled a few minutes past curfew.

No idea why they would switch the opening 1-2 punch, but I like it. I also appreciate the wide array of other differences between my show and yours. Makes me think twice about whether I'm truly tired of seeing them (I mean, it's been 13 times now!). I haven't seen or heard about any form of "93 Million Miles" since the first time I've seen them. The capitalization is the way it is because I was typing out the setlist onto the Notepad app in the iPod Touch while watching the show. It'll capitalize the first letter of the sentence automatically, but other capitalization requires an extra keystroke that is always more inconvenient than it sounds, especially when you're trying to watch a show. It's also a bitch to go back and modify any form of pre-written text, so I just leave it the way it is, and try to avoid abbreviations and acronyms in the first place which would require me to go back and edit. After the show I just copy & paste the setlist onto here and it's in the books. And for whatever reason, anytime I've seen Jared play "Capricorn" solo, he's referred to it as "A Brand New Name", but when performing it with the band he's called it "Capricorn", to which I would always add its official subtitle, in brackets, not parentheses (very anal retentively). So it's my way of distinguishing the two forms of the song. Am I right? I don't know, but I'm not wrong, because Jared's done it himself. .

And I'll continue this with... yep, another 30 Seconds To Mars setlist! May 10, 2010 Showbox SoDo Seattle, WA Escape Night Of The Hunter Attack Vox Populi From Yesterday Search And Destroy This Is War 100 Suns L490 (start of Jared's acoustic) Alibi / Bad Romance / Capricorn (snippets) The Kill (acoustic beginning and then full band) Closer To The Edge Hurricane Kings And Queens I was there more for Mute Math, though. The Nerve Armistice Chaos The Fight Spotlight Reset Typical Break The Same Sadly, the 5th time I've seen them was definitely the least memorable. I'm chalking that up to seeing them in a supporting role for the first time. There just wasn't as much energy in the crowd (and I was somewhere near the middle of the GA section). I briefly talked to Greg (guitarist) and Paul (lead singer) after the show, however. I introduced myself to Paul as "an extra for the video that was unreleased" ("Control", AKA my favorite song of the 2000s decade, whose video got pulled at the last minute due to the great similarities to another unnamed video). Paul made my night when he mentioned that the "Control" video was going to be put on their next DVD. My 15 minutes 10 seconds of fame will not be denied!

Well I have my tickets for AFI (by themselves, apparently) on June 3rd. They're also going to be touring with Green Day, but I'd rather catch their own show than to wait 2 more months and pay twice as much money to see them play second fiddle in another band's mega concert in support of a record I've already seen them support in a similar show. The date is a Thursday, which normally kills any potential for shows due to my tennis league that falls on the same night, but with an odd number of teams in the league, one team out of 17 has to have the week off each week, and June 3rd happens to be ours .

That's great that everything fell into place for you. Be sure to tell me how it went. I'd love to see 'em again. (Without Green Day, of course. But that tour isn't even coming to St. Louis, so I won't have to make a tortured decision.)

Just posting straight up. AFI - 6/3/10 The Orbit Room - Grand Rapids, MI 1. Medicate 2. Girl's Not Grey 3. The Leaving Song Part 2 4. I Am Trying Very Hard To Be Here 5. Kill Caustic 6. End Transmission 7. Perfect Fit 8. Beautiful Thieves 9. Dancing Through Sunday 10. Torch Song 11. Love is a Many Splendored Thing 12. On The Arrow 13. ...But Home Is Nowhere 14. Miss Murder Encore:15. The Days of the Phoenix 16. Love Like Winter 17. Silver and Cold It was indeed only AFI tonight at an intimate club venue with a medium-sized, mature, and appreciative crowd. A bittersweet feeling in that it was great to see them play closer than ever, but you kinda wish they'd have been able to do better than filling a small venue no greater than three-fourths its capacity, and it doesn't seem right with AFI in such a laid-back atmosphere, despite being my personal atmosphere of choice at any show. Davey's mic sounded distorted; never heard him in sub-clear audio quality before tonight. Hard to pick up the lyrics at times; I had to seek out "Perfect Fit" after I got home to be sure I had the right song, as I had never heard it and I could only decipher vague lyrics from the refrain. Hunter's mic was turned up seemingly too loud and favored the left speakers as if one very loud crowd member knew all the backing parts and sang them aloud. Personal first time views for "Perfect Fit" (you could tell who the hardcores were right away in a crowd like this; they all went straight up front), "...But Home is Nowhere" ( . I'd seen "This Time Imperfect", but not its front end), and "Days of the Phoenix" ( ;D. Finally!). Run time was 1 hour, 10 minutes. Shortest concert experience I'd ever witnessed, but while I was open to the possibility of another unannounced, unnamed band joining up here, I was not in the mood for it. They could have done a few more songs I thought, being their very own show and all, and minimal variance in their modern day selection compared to last year, but there was almost no stalling whatsoever with these guys. Not a single song ID. Straight and to the point and it flowed nicely enough that I wish some other bands would catch on. Took a 2½ hour drive plus a serious rush out of work to get here tonight, but would totally do it all over again.

Saw this weeks ago, obviously, but forgot to reply. I had to seek out "Perfect Fit" after I got home to be sure I had the right song, as I had never heard it and I could only decipher vague lyrics from the refrain. To be honest, I probably only know 1/4 of the songs from the first 3 albums by name. I might recognize most of them, but they could probably sneak 1/4 of the songs from the first two albums by me and I wouldn't even recognize them. I'm not sure I've ever seen them play "But Home Is Nowhere." That's bogus they were the only band on the bill that night and they still only played for as long as they ever do.

Tool from the other night. Set list looks identical to every other show of the tour, though I didn't peek beforehand. 01. Third Eye 02. Jambi (Don't know why, but I had a feeling this would be second.)03. Stinkfist (Don't know why, but I had a feeling this would be next.)04. Vicarious 05. Eon Blue Apocalypse... 06. ...The Patient 07. Intolerance (Never seen this live before!)08. Schism 09. Forty Six & 2 10. Lateralus 11. Ænema If you've seen Tool live, you know what small changes and/or extensions to expect in their live versions of "Third Eye," "Stinkfist," "Schism," and "Lateralus." The extension in the middle of "Intolerance" was the only modification I wasn't anticipating. I just wish they'd put out a live album and/or DVD one of these days, so I could have official live recordings of those songs. (To their credit, their live versions of "Third Eye" and "Pus***" are already preserved on the Salival set from 10 years ago.) It's amusing that after all these years, there's still an abundance of people faked out in "Stinkfist," who emphatically shout "I'll!" and "Keep!" before they realize that the band has taken a left turn and hasn't gotten to that part yet. Guess I shouldn't have taken him literally, but Maynard, after the first song, no less, said "for the next two hours..." So after 1:45, with no encore, I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. Especially since they aren't touring in support of a new record, I was hoping to hear a few more surprises along the way. You can pretty much expect 7 of those 11 (10½?) songs at every show. Taken at his word, I was expecting another half hour. I would've loved to have heard one more song off each album.

Haven't been on here much in a while, so I guess I should keep this up-to-date. Saw LCD Soundsystem on May 25th with opening act Holy Ghost!. The opening act was okay, they were trying too hard to be too many things at once. Electronic, while retro, while indie, while singing ballady type songs. They weren't too bad, except the lead singer was always almost out of breath. As for LCD Soundsystem, he was pretty solid. But it was weird surrounded by hipsters everywhere. I was having fun making fun of how people dressed. Setlist: LCD Soundsystem - May 25, 2010 @ Kool Haus, Toronto, ON 1. Us v Them 2. Drunk Girls 3. Get Innocuous! 4. Yr City's a Sucker 5. Pow Pow 6. Daft Punk Is Playing At My House 7. All I Want 8. All My Friends 9. I Can Change 10. Tribulations 11. Movement 12. Yeah Encore: 13. Someone Great 14. Losing My Edge 15. New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down / Empire State of Mind (Jay-Z cover) Went to New York last week for a job interview. Didn't go as well as I hoped, but hey, free trip! During my trip, I went to see the American Idiot Broadway musical. And while it's not exactly a concert, I'll still post about it here. I was overall impressed by the musical and rather surprised at how it actually works. The musical consisted mostly songs from American Idiot as well as some songs from 21st Century Breakdown and an additional few with a new song. The arrangement for most of the songs were very similar to their original versions, which I can't really say if it's a good thing. I think I would have liked it if they tried to make the songs more musical-like, but then that wouldn't stay true to the music. The slower songs have some significant changes to the arrangements for obvious reasons. The performers for the most part were pretty good, minus the lead John Gallagher Jr. as 'Johnny', who did a decent job singing the ballads, his voice just isn't nearly as strong as Billy Joe Armstrong's when it comes to singing the harder songs like "American Idiot." I think the best singer was definitely Stark Sands who played the role of "Tunny." I have a hard time thinking anyone who's not a Green Day fan would enjoy the show as there was barely any dialogue and the character development was rather shallow. That being said, the show was well worth the 50% discounted rush-ticket I got. And I got suckered into buying the CD and t-shirt. 1. American Idiot 2. Jesus Of Suburbia 3. Holiday 4. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams 5. Favorite Son 6. Are We The Waiting 7. St. Jimmy 8. Give Me Novacaine 9. Last Of The American Girls / She's A Rebel 10. Last Night On Earth 11. Before The Lobotomy 12. Extraordinary Girl 13. Before The Lobotomy (Reprise) 14. When It's Time 15. Know Your Enemy 16. 21 Guns 17. Letterbomb 18. Wake Me Up When September Ends 19. Homecoming 20. Whatsername
Curtain call: 21. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
The Max came over to Toronto this past week and he went to see one of the two Lady Gaga shows with me. We paid a bit over $100 for each ticket and it was still in the 300s. UGH. Apparently on Sunday's show, Elton John showed up to watch. I got suckered into buying a $40 "Telephone" t-shirt. Opening act was Semi Precious Weapons and we heard they were awful, so we skipped it. It was a pretty good show, she has a lot of star power and stage presence. She knows it and she was pretty shameless about it as she kept yelling "SCREAM FOR ME!!!" It was probably the only concert I've ever been to where half of the people attending were dressed-up in some sort of costume. Gaga had many costume changes, elaborate stage and of course lots of dancing. Before she went on, she had a number where you can text to donate to a charity that helps LGBT homeless youths. Well during her set, she called one of the people who donated and talked to them for a brief minute, then telling them that because they were kind enough to donate to the charity, they got their seat upgraded. Pretty cool. 1. Dance In The Dark 2. Glitter And Grease 3. Just Dance 4. Beautiful, Dirty, Rich 5. Vanity 6. The Fame 7. LoveGame 8. Boys, Boys, Boys 9. Money Honey 10. Telephone 11. Speechless 12. You And I 13. So Happy I Could Die 14. Monster 15. Teeth 16. Alejandro 17. Poker Face 18. Paparazzi
Encore: 19. Bad Romance
Last night, I went to see OneRepublic. Alpha Rev opened for them, they were okay but I couldn't get into their music too much. I did like how they had a violin player and a cello player. As for OneRepublic, Ryan Tedder has a pretty amazing voice with his falsetto, but his voice cracked quite a few times. Overall, it was a very enjoyable show, I liked how they covered quite a few songs from other artists. And the best part, no lame encores! I would have liked to hear more songs from their latest album though. I grabbed the setlist and contributed to setlist.fm. OneRepublic - July 15, 2010 @ Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON 1. Everybody Loves Me 2. Stop And Stare 3. Secrets 4. Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand cover) 5. Good Life 6. Marchin On 7. All This Time 8. Made For You 9. All The Right Moves 10. Say (All I Need) 11. Apologize Encore: 12. Stand By Me (Ben E. King cover) 13. Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes cover) / SexyBack (Justin Timberlake cover) 14. Waking Up Still to come are Lilith Fair next week (lol ), then Green Day with AFI in August.

The Gaslight Anthem last night: I'm seeing them on Thursday! Recently I saw: Naked Eyes - A free concert on the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, and probably the best washed up 80s band I've seen so far (though the Fixx last year here were pretty good.) Usually 80s bands at concerts like these play a bunch of horrible new songs and say they're coming out with a new CD (which never gets released.) These guys played a bunch of new songs too; however they actually sounded decent. I doubt if the CD will be released though. They must have been about 50 years old by now, but they actually looked and sounded very good. I don't know too many of their songs by name other than "Promises Promises" and "Always Something There to Remind Me," both of which they played, of course. Tonic - @ concerts in the park in downtown San Jose, another free concert series. (Where the Gaslight Anthem is playing this Thurs.!) They played every song that has ever been a single (except "Mean to Me") or the name of one of their albums. Seriously I don't even know how I remembered that "Casual Affair" was a single (or it was just picked up on by a radio station I used to listen to, because I know I definitely heard that quite a few times. Their encore was some song about being Irish. Overall, they were good & I hadn't realized before how complex their melodies are. The opener, Green River Ordinance, OTOH blew. They were obviously having fun, but this doesn't work unless you have a shred of competence to begin with IMO. Other upcoming concerts (maybe): A Flock of Seagulls @ Santa Cruz. It's free, and it's only an hour drive, although it's an incredibly annoying drive (it's through curvy this forest wasteland that isn't lit very well, which is especially annoying on the way back.) I'd go for sure if I haven't seen them before, but I saw them a few years back and they were...not very good at all. (Though still eons better than When in Rome, who opened for them then.) The only reason I'd go is to see if they'd play my favorite song of theirs, "Wishing," which they didn't last time. Still there's no guarantee so this one I'll probably end up skipping. Eddie Money @ Santa Cruz (Lol.) Jack Johnson @ the UC Berkeley Greek Theater, if I can win tickets again. I almost won tickets from Live 105 a few months ago, and I got through, was the correct caller, and answered the question correctly (it was rather easy, name Jack Johnson's 3 careers)...but I had won Air tickets just barely 2 months before that, and they won't let you win anything more than once within 60 days... (Oh well, gotta play by the rules. And I wasn't too heartbroken because Air really was very good. If it would have been a crap prize that prevented me from winning JJ tix, though, I would have been pissed.) U2 @ the Oakland Arena. It finally got rescheduled...for June 7, 2011. Oh well, at least they rescheduled it, unlike Depeche Mode last year. I won tickets off of KFOG but they haven't sent them yet; I wonder if they'll still honor them (though they've been pretty good about keeping me updated.)

I'm seeing them on Thursday! Damn. Didn't mean to spoil anything for you. Sorry. But that's definitely cool you're going to see them. Don't know if you've seen them before, but either way, you're in for a treat. Saw Lady Gaga again tonight. Best view ever back in January. Worst view ever tonight ("limited rear view," it was called) as I waited 'til 4 days ago to buy my ticket guilt-free. (Didn't even get to sit anywhere near my 2 friends.) Set list was identical to the one Sunny posted. I didn't realize "Glitter and Grease," as short as it was, was a separate song with a name. Having never heard it, I just thought it was some kind of reworked coda for "Dance in the Dark."

Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival: 3 Inches of Blood played "Deadly Sinners." Psychostick songs included "This Is Not a Song, It's a Sandwich!", "Scrotal Torment," "The World's Shortest Song," and "I Can Only Count to Four" (Drowning Pool "Bodies" parody). They did not play "Beer" or "Girl Directions." In This Moment played "Beautiful Tragedy" and "The Gun Show." (They did not play "Forever." ) Shadows Fall played "The Power of I and I" and "Bark at the Moon." (They did not play "What Drives the Weak" , "Redemption," or "Another Hero Lost," but that one's a power-ballad.) Norma Jean played "Bayonetwork." Chimaira played "Resurrection," "Power Trip," and "Pure Hatred." Hatebreed songs included "Perseverance," "I Will Be Heard," "Tear It Down," "Live for This," "Doomsayer" (with guest vocals from Lamb of God's Randy Blythe), "This Is Now," and "Destroy Everything." Five Finger Death Punch songs included "The Bleeding," "Never Enough," "The Way of the Fist," "Bad Company," and "Walk Away." (I'm sure they played whatever other singles they've had, but I didn't see the first 1/3-1/2 of their set, because I don't particularly care for them. They were opening up the main stage and I was still walking over from the side stages and using the bathroom for the second time before settling in for the main stage bands. 3 Inches of Blood, the first band of the day, was the only other band I could do without seeing all of, so I went ahead and used the bathroom during their set. I wanted to see literally every song by every side stage band for the ensuing four hours.) Lamb of God songs included "Laid to Rest" , "Now You've Got Something to Die For," "Walk with Me in Hell," and "Redneck." Now for the four bands of the day that I had any hope of keeping track of the setlists: I tried to remember Winds of Plague's set list, but their songs are hard to remember the titles of, for one, and while I could at least remember the track numbers of the songs on their first album I didn't recall the names of, a good indication of how disappointing I found their second album is that I couldn't even remember track numbers, let alone song titles. Songs from the first album included "The Impaler," "Decimate the Weak," "Reloaded," and "One Body Too Many." (They did not play "Anthems of the Apocalypse" ) The only song off their second album I recognized was "Earth," but that's only the album intro track. Rob Zombie (roughly in order): What Lurks on Channel X? Superbeast Scum of the Earth Living Dead Girl More Human Than Human Sick Bubble-Gum House of 1000 Corpses Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy) Thunderkiss '65 Mars Needs Women School's Out (Alice Cooper cover, snippet) Dragula (Surprisingly no "Super-Charger Heaven," "Feel So Numb," "Foxy, Foxy," or "American Witch." Looks like I should be happy I got "Never Gonna Stop" instead of "Demonoid Phenomenon.") Atreyu01. Bleeding Mascara 02. Becoming the Bull 03. Gallows 04. Right Side of the Bed 05. You Give Love a Bad Name 06. Someone's Standing on My Chest 07. Ex's and Oh's 08. Lip Gloss and Black (Wish I hadn't consulted setlist.fm to confirm the order against previous dates, because one of the differences is that the first three shows got "Deanne the Arsonist" instead of "Standing on My Chest." ) Korn01. Right Now 02. Here to Stay 03. Did My Time 04. Uber-Time / Oildale (Leave Me Alone) 05. Falling Away From Me 06. Somebody Someone 07. Let the Guilt Go 08. Freak on a Leash 09. Blind 10. Shoots and Ladders (radio edit) / One (Metallica cover, bridge only) 11. Clown 12. Got the Life

I'm seeing them on Thursday! Damn. Didn't mean to spoil anything for you. Sorry. But that's definitely cool you're going to see them. Don't know if you've seen them before, but either way, you're in for a treat. It's all good. I saw them last year as part of a mega-concert that included the Limousines, Airborne Toxic Event, Street Sweeper Social Club, All-American Rejects, & Flogging Molly, the last one of which I didn't stay for. But GE was one of the intro-bands, so they only played like five songs, unfortunately. Also the acoustics of that place weren't that great (SJSU gymnasium) so while I remember them being decent, I don't remember anything else about them. But, this time they were WAY better. You weren't kidding when you said I was in for a treat! Probably the best live band I've seen in recent memory. 1. American Slang 2. Old White Lincoln 3. The Boxer 4. Wherefor Art Thou, Elvis? 5. The Diamond St. Choir 6. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues 7. Bring It On 8. Miles Davis & the Cool 9. Red in the Morning 10. The Spirit of Jazz 11. Film Noir 12. Angry Johnny & the Radio 13. The '59 Sound 14. Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts 15. Orphans 16. The Queen of Lower Chelsea 17. Stay Lucky 18. Señor and the Queen 19. Boomboxes and Dictionaries ^^(About this time some girl managed to crawl on top of the stage. The Gaslight Anthem was like 'hey you...this ain't your gig'...lol. ) 20. Great Expectations Encore: 21. She Loves You 22. The War (Lucero Cover) 23. We Came to Dance 24. Here's Looking at You, Kid 25. The Backseat

25 songs?! Holy s***. They're hit or miss for me, but they seem like the kind of band whose live show would turn me around on their misses.

Went to see the Lilith Fair tour yesterday at Molson Canadian Amphitheatre. I was mad that Kelly Clarkson pulled out of the tour, and just recently La Roux pulled out as well due to laryngitis. But since I had tickets that were $15 each after convenience fees, I really couldn't complain. We had outdoor lawn seats and thank god it stopped raining about 30 minutes we got there. Despite the poor ticket sales that plagued the tour, it did sell out in Toronto. I guess there are enough lesbians here to fill the venue. Now the first weekend of this month was Pride Week here in Toronto (the biggest one in North America too, mind you), and the Lady Gaga show two weeks ago was like an addendum to that. And Lilith Fair, was like another addendum to it, but for lesbians. They even had to reassign some of the men's bathrooms to women's, in order to keep up with the demands of the demographic. Actually they still couldn't keep up with it as there were still huge lineups, and women were going into the men's bathroom until they put a security guard there stopping them from doing so. The main acts at the show were Courtyard Hounds, Chantal Kreviazuk, Lights, Mary J. Blige and Sarah McLachlan. We got there halfway through Chantal's set and she was meh, I guess. Although it was cool that she invited Sarah McLachlan on stage to sing "Feels Like Home" as her finale. Lights was pretty good. She's a new Canadian electropop artist and played mostly on her synthesizer and keytar. However, she did an acoustic cover of Rancid's "Fall Back Down" on the guitar, which surprisingly turned on decent. I've been meaning to see Mary J. Blige in a while but the last time she was in town, she was touring with Jay-Z performing at Air Canada Centre, which meant tickets would have been much more expensive that I'd like to pay. But anyhow, her performance was so real and raw. The way she sings through her songs and when she talks, were so emotional. My favourite was her performance was "No More Drama", which was as real as it could get. She also did a couple covers, "One" as expected, and "Stairway To Heaven", which was impressive as its ability to raise eyebrows. Setlist: 1. You Bring Me Joy 2. Be Happy 3. Real Love 4. The One 5. I Am 6. One (U2 cover) 7. Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin cover) 8. Family Affair 9. Be Without You Headliner was of course, Sarah McLachlan. Of course, she performed a few songs from her new album, but obviously the ones that got everyone singing were songs from her older albums. I was a little disappointed that she didn't sing "U Want Me 2" since I started to like, now that my local Starbucks plays it every other time I'm there. But I have to say the best performer of the night was definitely Mary J. Blige. For the second encore song, Sarah invited everyone who performed back on the stage (except Mary J. Blige who left already) to sing "Because The Night." Chantal Kreviazuk didn't know the words to the song as she had to hold a piece of paper while she was singing. Setlist: 1. Angel (with Emmylou Harris) 2. Building A Mystery 3. Loving You Is Easy 4. Stupid 5. World on Fire 6. I Will Remember You 7. Forgiveness 8. Adia 9. Illusions of Bliss 10. Sweet Surrender 11. Possession Encore: 12. Ice Cream 13. Because The Night (Patti Smith cover) (with all previous performers except Mary J. Blige)

Chantal Kreviazuk didn't know the words to ["Because the Night,"] as she had to hold a piece of paper while she was singing. That's funny. 1. Angel (with Emmylou Harris) She opened with "Angel"? I've never seen her live, but that seems like a rather odd choice to start her set with, as it's so hushed and subdued. Saw Silversun Pickups and Against Me! for free downtown last night. The problem with having it outdoors and not at the perfectly sized venue where I work is that when a lightning storm blows in after 8 SSPU songs, the show has to be shut down for liability reasons. On the bright side, while I did bring a disposable poncho, I'm glad the show got called and we were back on the road before the windy downpour actually arrived. Against Me!: 01. High Pressure Low 02. Pints of Guinness Make You Strong 03. Thrash Unreal 04. White Crosses 05. Up the Cuts 06. Rapid Decompression 07. I Was a Teenage Anarchist 08. The Ocean 09. Bamboo Bones 10. Suffocation 11. New Wave 12. Don't Lose Touch 13. Miami 14. Sink, Florida, Sink They did 3/5 of the new album and "Because of the Shame" wasn't one of the songs. Silversun Pickups: 1. Growing Old Is Getting Old 2. Well Thought Out Twinkles 3. Sort Of 4. There's No Secrets This Year 5. The Royal We 6. Little Lover's So Polite 7. It's Nice to Know You Work Alone 8. Future Foe Scenarios One of the best shows I'd seen all year to this point (and just a very comfortable 3 or 4 deep from the barricade, at the front of the seated VIP section), as I haven't seen Against Me! since becoming an actual fan. They played a club I interned at in Memphis in the fall of 2005, probably less than a year after I'd first even heard of them or really knew who they were, anyway. And aside from playing a Warped Tour set in 2008, a year I didn't go, they never came through St. Louis in support of New Wave. And it was the third time seeing Silversun Pickups. The first two times they were a support band at shows that came through my venue. They opened for Snow Patrol and I only knew "Lazy Eye" at that point. Then they played one of the Alternative station's Christmas shows that December. I had a burned copy of Carnavas at that point, thanks to Kirk (or maybe it was Steve?) when we did that FTP free-for-all 3 years ago. So I at least recognized all the songs, if not specifically which was which. So, yeah, the first time seeing them off the clock, knowing both their albums very well, and the first time seeing them perform any Swoon songs, as they didn't come through St. Louis last year. Looking at setlist.fm just now, it looks like I missed out on hearing "Kissing Families" from the Pikul EP (wouldn't have known it anyway), and then "Catch and Release" is the only other song aside from the obvious soreness of not getting to hear "Panic Switch" (for the first time live!) and "Lazy Eye."

And tonight I saw a tour that had 8 metal bands: War of Ages, Cancer Bats, Architects (UK), The Acacia Strain, Blessthefall, Between the Buried and Me, Underoath, and As I Lay Dying. Underoath: 01. Returning Empty Handed 02. Breathing in a New Mentality 03. It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door 04. Anyone Can Dig a Hole But It Takes a Real Man to Call It Home 05. Emergency Broadcast: The End Is Near 06. Writing on the Walls 07. [New song - I'll edit in the title when the album comes out in October. I made a few notes about it and caught some stray words] 08. Everyone Looks So Good From Here 09. Desperate Times, Desperate Measures 10. In Regards to Myself While I'm not a huge Underoath fan, I listened to enough of their music this past week that I was able to figure out their set list on my own, looking up the ones I had lyrics for when I got home. With Aaron Gillespie not in the band anymore, his melodic vocals fall not on the new drummer, but between Spencer, actually, and Tim McTague (the short, bearded guitarist usually wearing too short cut-off jean shorts). As I Lay Dying: 01. 94 Hours 02. An Ocean Between Us 03. Anodyne Sea (my very favorite song off the new album. Oddly, I just realized they didn't play "Parallels," the single)04. Beyond Our Suffering 05. The Sound of Truth ;D (my very favorite AILD song)06. Within Destruction [drum solo] 07. Vacancy 08. Condemned 09. Nothing Left 10. Through Struggle 11. Confined Strangely, they didn't play "Forever." (Though they were running short on time. And looking at setlist.fm just now shows me that if they'd had an extra 4-5 minutes that would've indeed been their last song.) Even though I was on the clock, I had so little to do that I was able to watch 97% of their entire set. I knew the material so well and had so little responsibility tonight that aside from watching as close as I would've liked to, this was actually my favorite show of theirs I've seen. I think I've seen them at least 5 times now.

She opened with "Angel"? I've never seen her live, but that seems like a rather odd choice to start her set with, as it's so hushed and subdued. I thought the same thing too, but at the same time it was also by far the slowest of all the songs she performed that night, so I think it would be rather odd to randomly break the momentum by placing it in the middle of the set. The only other place she could have put it would have been in the encore, but everyone expects her to play that song, so that would have been lame.

She's opened up a couple shows for Relient K and Owl City within 6 months of each other. She's OK, but nobody I'd buy. Thank god she didn't have that Rancid cover up her sleeve yet. I might agree with you that it was surprisingly decent, but I'm too scared to take that chance, because Rancid means so much to me and Lights means so little.

Lol, Lights. I saw her open for somebody a few years ago, I can't even remember who (I'm sure it was either As Tall As Lions or Envy On The Coast - some one time Alternative Press darling that never panned out...maybe it was even both of the above.) All I remember about Lights was how I thought she was as idealistically attractive as any performer I'd ever seen, which influenced me in going easy on her for the otherwise asinine claim she was constantly making--"My name is Lights"--seriously? It's the same as the name of your band Then I found out recently that she'd legally changed her first name to Lights, which is just as asinine if not more. Anyway, her ascension, even though it's only just having her name tossed around here and there, having her CD being sold at Target, and now opening for some moderately successful acts, it kind of surprised me a little, knowing that I'd seen her as a nobody opening for nobodies. Well I do have a few upcoming shows myself: Alice In Chains - 9/17 Jimmy Eat World - 10/8 Muse - 10/12 Can't get here soon enough!
