Okay, it just seems so weird for me to say this. I like a bunch of her singles and always at least enjoyed her songs on a superficial level but never knew I'd tell people that I love an Alanis Morissette album, a 2008 studio album from her specifically. But it's happened. I just got through listening to Flavors of Entanglement again and am pissed I didn't go to the library earlier to hear this because I could have ordered it at Amazon for just $7 during Black Friday. That aside I know that Guy Sigsworth has worked with the likes of Björk and Madonna, and there is at times a "trip-hop" kind of undercurrent in the songs. Still, a few songs wouldn't have sounded too out of place in her earlier output. I can't believe I'm putting stuff like this on par with current Coldplay and Black Keys.
The songs are pretty memorable, actually. It is both a more experimental album and a fairly sophisticated one at the same time, as well as one that doesn't bore me at all. For the record I have her first two albums (for us non-Canadians) and don't think they were much over $3 at the used deals I got, one from a flea market and another at a used sale.
The songs: (4/5)
01. Not as We
02. Citizen of the Planet (Eastern-like instrumentation and a heavy distorted bass in the chorus!)
03. Moratorium
04. Torch
05. Incomplete
06. Versions of Violence (I wasn't expecting them to have a taste for EBM... but not bad.)
07. Straitjacket
08. Underneath (Understandable lead single choice, since it's truest to her classic style.)
09. Giggling for No Reason
10. Tapes
11. In Praise of the Vulnerable Man
Pretty much all of 'em are strong.
